The whole way through the tour, Jack seems to be _slowly_ coming apart at the seams. The more exposure he has to the Overlook Hotel, the more unstable he becomes. Amazing acting by Nicholson.

The axe's name is Beatrice. I spent a year at the Elkwood Hotel, as my home was being rebuilt. It was extremely busy during December to mid January. I believe all their profit was made December to January. From February to November, the cavernous hotel had minimal occupants, sometimes I was the only one there. With no visitors, calls to my room, save for the occasional insurance call, and no communication with anybody, the beautiful isolation awakened my mind to the magic of the emptiness. The Elkwater is in a very remote area, extremely remote area. When I was the only guest there, the music echoing through the enormous hallways gave me caretaker inspirations. I had no functional vehicle, no job, no companionship, just my caretaker thoughts. I learned as much as anybody could about the Elkwater. I even explored the boiler room, storage rooms, other rooms, the generator area, the garages for the hotel groundskeeping, and more. I found a beautiful fire axe in the stairwell. After several weeks, I named the axe Beatrice. She is a mirror image of Jack Torrance's axe. I have Beatrice at my new home now. But I polished her to a mirror finish. Oh, how I feel that she wants me to play with her and use her. I found out who my friends are after the fire. I only have one Beatrice.

@@joeb5080I mean it sorta is a real hotel. The exterior shots of the Overlook Hotel in this movie are actually the Timberline Lodge in Oregon. And the hotel itself is based on Stephen King's experiences staying at the Stanley Hotel in Colorado. The 1997 mini-series adaption of The Shining which notably was more accurate to the novel and had King's involvement was filmed entirely at the Stanley Hotel. So with about a few thousand miles of travel between two destinations you could somewhat experience the real life Overlook lol.

His father was the caretaker. As he is, as Danny would have been. If the chain is broken, then Jack Torrance Senior returns to watch over the Overlook. The Overlook is always going to be there. Jack Torrance will always be the care taker. Dilbert Grady will always be the head waiter. Lloyd will always be the bartender. Mr. Grady will always unfold his psychosis upon his children and wife, as correcting them. Jack will always attempt to, "correct," his family. Chef Dick Halloran will always be slaughtered by Jack. It is a wonderful infinity! Just like the Donner party will always be feasting upon each other's remains.

That decorator from Chicago did an uncanny job restoring the place. It looks exactly the same as it did in 1926, even the couches.
@joeb5080
@joeb5080 7 ай бұрын
It could have been bastardized at a later time (50s? 60s?), and then the decorator was brought in the late 70s in to restore it to the way it was in the 1920s, with some retro-chic updates, and updated couches that are modern but have a 20s feel to them. (The 1970s was the period when people were just starting to get over post-war modernism, and start appreciating traditional/pre-WWII design and architecture again). It's a brilliantly done set. It really looks like a realistic hotel in 1979-1980 that could have kept or restored many design elements from the 1900-1940 period, but without completely freezing in that period. That's the brilliance of Kubrick. Any other movie would have made the hotel look *too* much like it was from an earlier time, and therefore not a realistic hotel that you would actually encounter in real life.

kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qbyJZJtlrtfdYZ8.html 0:42 Jack looks Backwards at Bill as a Women Leaving the Hotel walks through Jack going the opposite direction. (As George puts it, "The Beatles can lead you the wrong way") Jack's Eyes Scream, "Hey, Bill. Fuck Off!" Wendy asks, "Authentic?" Questioning Bill's Authenticy. 2:20 "When was The Overlook built (BILL homophone)" Bill stands behind a light pole as the family stands in front of it. As if the light pole equates to a door 🚪 or wedge between Jack, Wendy, Ullman and Bill. Bill is destined to be trapped in the hedgemaze. 2:23 1907 - 1909 the Overlook was built for it's isolation to keep the foreigners out. Repellent. A light pole separates Jack, Wendy, Ullman, and Bill. A man carries Luggage the opposite direction (hey I thought Bill was supposed to carry the luggage) Jack overlaps at the 19 of 1907 with the man carrying the luggage overlaps and at 2:24 Notice Bill equates to 7 from the 1907 code. Also Bill equates to the building of the hotel and it's purpose for construction. The luggage passes him from the 7 to the 9 of "1907" and "1909" The Shining is a work of pure imagination and the Overlook was built specifically for one purpose. 2:47 Bill finds himself stuck in the middle and the backseat figuratively as he is trapped inside the useless escape vehicle: the snowcat. Dick Halloran will provide the family their true escape vehicle later (which btw was both physically and economically very expensive and time consuming. Not to mention, Dick commits to traversing the country in the most dire and dangerous elements and circumstances on the most miraculous of hunches.... Wink wink) Bill Watson is at a Dead End. He is destined to be left behind like Lost Luggage.

He doesn’t utter a word through the tour, rather watching jack and Wendy in the most eerie and terrifying way. Can someone elaborate on this character and his meaning? @@williamkampert1475 Bill does a number bizarre things. Not shown here but a few times Bill says 'fine' to Ullman as an unusual response. Initially when they go to get Jack for the tour, Bill stands behind Jack and sees him reading the playgirl magazine. When Ullman tells Bill they are ready Bill just utters "fine" in a rude way. When Halleron is done showing Wendy the storage room Bill Jack and Ullman come over and Bill stands almost directly behind Halleron in front of the door which was also seemed unusual. Some people theorize Bill represents part of the Beatles band but i think thats reading too much into since that is irrelevant to the story
