The woman that the preacher gave the blood stained Bible to survived, and lived to give birth to a boy that became a preacher to others including the man that's telling the story.
@scottdonohue3379
@scottdonohue3379 2 жыл бұрын
The point of the story was that the preacher gave his Bible to the hooker as he was dying. It had such an impact on her that she got her life together and raised her son reading to him from the blood stained Bible the dying preacher gave her. In turn her son went on to become a preacher and was sharing the story of the accident that led to him being there and being a preacher. It’s a redemption story. The hooker was lost and searching to find herself. In the end she raised a good son who went on, at least apparently, to be a preacher who could help others.

Good job explaining, and thanks because I don't think he even got it. at first he stopped the song to say a truck driver died. Then he stopped the song to talk about morals of the hooker. Not even getting that the preacher in the end was the hooker's son. I kept hollering at him "NO!! Be quiet and just listen". hahahahaha

Spot on analysis. Christians, even in their dying moments, are looking to help others become more than they are. This is antithetical to their portrayal in media culture. Don't get frustrated that our reactor hasn't yet realized the true meaning of the song. Be patient with him. He said he enjoyed the song a great deal and anyone who likes a song will likely play it again, the next time in a setting wherein he doesn't have to worry about KZfaq issues.

You missed a big part of the song, you need to re-listen to the chorus and the end. Its not about morals or who should survive its about what changes can be made with a good life that's sacrificed for another. The Hooker lived, and she took that blood stained Bible and changed her life, had a son who became a Preacher and preached from that very same Bible. That's the moral of this story. Its not that the "good" or "morally correct" should always be the ones to be saved, it's that "good" can come from a good person being sacrificed and doing all the can to change another persons life. Randy Travis is a legend, will always be a legend. He's still kicking even though he suffered a massive stroke a few years back and can no longer sing or play guitar, he's still in Nashville and can get around and communicate some. But he influence the singing careers of Josh Turner and Scotty McCreery, who if you've not checked out on your channel you definitely should, they are both great baritone/bass vocalist. Josh Turner would be "Long Black Train" or "I Wouldn't Be A Man", Scotty McCreery would be, "5 More Minutes" or "This Is It" or "Damn Straight". Hope you enjoy.

I am not what you would call a religious person and I'm not "spiritual" in the sense of how the world uses that word. I am a sinner who was redeemed by the blood of Christ. Forgiven. I cry when I hear this because I know this redemption story. You cry because you know something inside that you are fighting because maybe you don't want to admit it. God bless you for sharing.

I was raised on Randy Travis. Its such a shame he can no longer sing like this. Music was his life and that was taken away from him as he suffered a severe stroke in 2013. There's an amazing video of Kane Brown covering this song when he was being interviewed on a radio station. The station surprised Kane by sneaking Randy into the studio as Kane was singing. Kane is very young and the expression on his face when he realized Randy was there..... Talk about star struck!

There are many places where a man put up 3 wooden crosses. And in the story in the song the preacher asks the hooker” candy you see the promised land?” And then the preacher telling this story in church holds up the Bible the preacher gave her when he handed her the Bible as he died. So to me it is a story of redemption and leading others to salvation as that Bible led the lady and then she was a preacher’s mother.

My favorite Randy Travis song The Survived changed her life, Her SON became a Preacher carrying the bible. Morals???? Go back listen again. He said ( it's about what you leave behind, not what you take. Farmer left a farm & 80 acres and a son who loved growing things, the Teacher left behind young minds filled with wanting to learn. The Preacher left his Bible with the Hooker who read it to her son,who be came a Preacher passing on the learnings from that Bible.

Did you miss it? Your reaction suggests you missed it. Four people travelling on the bus. The farmer and the teacher both died. As did the preacher whilst placing his bible in the hookers hand. "That's the story that OUR PREACHER told last Sunday, as he held that BLOOD STAINED BIBLE up for all of us to see. Thank the farmer and the teacher AND THE PREACHER, who gave this bible to my MOMMA WHO READ IT TO ME. The PREACHER who told the story at church's momma was the hooked from the bus, who obviously changed her ways after the accident
@Rosiepooh75
@Rosiepooh75 2 жыл бұрын
Exactly! And this leads to the hook: it's not what you take when you leave this world behind you, it's what you leave behind you when you go. The preacher leaving her his Bible changed her life and that of her son, who in turn as a preacher impacted and changes many lives. There is no moral judgement here at all. Randy's music has never been about that, even in his gospel songs

Randy Travis is one of the greatest country singers ever to do it. His voice inspires so much emotion. And this song always gets me to shed a few tears. The best songs are the ones that tell stories that, when you close your eyes, you can see playing out before you. His ‘More Life’ is a MUST SEE & frankly a must hear for all of us!!! It’s on his 25th Anniversary album which featured his songs in duet; this one features Don Henley (not too shabby🥰). Randy performed it live on his Anniversary special & mere months later had the tragic stroke which robbed us all of that divine voice. But as this song says- it’s what you leave. Oh, MrLboyd, you missed the twist in the song! The line about the preacher saying “Can’t you see the promised land?” as he lay the blood-stained Bible in the hooker’s hand, would indicate that the hooker died, and the preacher lived. She’s dying, he just shared the gospel with her, and says, “Can’t you see the promised land? You’re going to heaven.” When you hear the line, “That’s the story our preacher told last Sunday, as he held that blood-stained Bible up for all of us to see,” you THINK it’s the same preacher. He’s telling the story of the crash he survived, wondering why his is not the fourth wooden cross on the side of the highway. THEN he lowers the boom on you. For the man who held the Bible up, and told the story of the crash, said, “God bless the farmer and the teacher…and that preacher who gave this Bible to my mama, who read it to me.” Only then do you realize it was the hooker, and not the preacher, who survived.

The assumption you're meant to have made is that all 4 passengers died but nobody loved the hooker enoughto make a cross for her. Then the revelation that she survived and read the preachers Bible to her son who became a preacher was meant to be a transformation of emotions.

I might not say that it is a story about morals as it is redemption. The song infers that because her life was spared and because of the Word of God she found in the Bible that she turned her life around. So much that she raised her son on the Word of God and he became a preacher. We all have problems with morals, and we all need a Redeemer. Very beautiful song and a big Randy Travis fan. It's always had great lyrics, I loved the "two of them were searching for lost souls" in refrence to the preacher & the hooker, searching for lost souls for differnet reasons but still a nice lyric. The point of the song was that it's what we leave behind us when we go that matters, the preacher left his faith even as he died, passing his bible to the hooker. Theoretically, she turned her life around & raised her son reading from the bloodstained bible, the son in turn grew up to be a preacher, bringing it all back to it's not what we take when we go but what we leave behind.

Randy reacting to Kane Brown singing is quite the emotional experience. Kane was the guy that Ryan Upchurch was making fun of in Said F It. I at first was thinking the preacher was holding the Bible into the dying hands of the lady.

This song is one of those that always makes me cry (including while I was watching this video.) If it comes on the radio while I'm driving, I have to change the channel. Did you catch in the last verse, the preacher telling the story is the son of the 'lady of the evening.' It's sort of implied that she was pregnant at the time of the accident.

I realize I am really late on this song but my personal take on it was that however unfair it is to leave this world when we don't want to go, 3 of those people were able/ready to meet this sad ending. Having left a legacy behind and having a after life to look to. One did not yet have that in their life. So when the accident happened and the miracle of having her life spared, then double down on that idea with the preacher giving her his bible before his passing it changed something in her. The whole thing became life altering for. Perhaps she was with child when the accident happened so the incident change forever, two lives for the better. The story always makes me cry but both out of happiness and sadness. Life is full of good and bad it is how we walk though it that defines us. I love this song and the choices it presumes to make with the people in it's story. Thank you for sharing this. Just sayin...

God has plans for each of us, and it isn't what we take with us, it's what we leave behind when we go. The woman was given the time and opportunity to grow and leave behind her a godly testimony, and a son who also loved the Lord. He lived his life to proclaim the grace of God to all willing to listen, that this life inevitably bleeds into eternity, so each of us gets to build a living testimony to Him to leave behind when we go. This is indeed a bittersweet story, that ends with gratitude and hope for each person touched by all of those on the bus, plus all those they left behind when they entered eternity. It gloriously tugs at our heartstrings as we listen; because our soul hears God calling to each of us. What will you leave behind you when you go?

I would totally agree with the point that some other commenters have made. I think the story is not so much about morals. I think WE as people immediately go to morals due to the four individuals involved. I feel the story is much more about our actions while we are living and not knowing the far reaching affects of every little action we take. There is no way that the Preachers would have know that his last action of giving the Bible to the woman would result in creating another Man of God, who most likely affected the lives of hundreds of other people. I kind of look at this story from a different perspective, based on the word that Randy gives us. The Farmer passed on his love of working the earth and raising crops to feed others, so his legacy lives on in his son(s), the Teacher left her knowledge and wisdom in the children she taught, so her legacy lives on in those children, the Preacher, we have to assume, helped lots of people through his ministry. So those three had accomplishments and it could be said their work on Earth was done and they gained their reward by now being in Heaven. The Hooker on the other hand really had nothing to show for her life. Other than providing temporary pleasure to her clients, she really had no legacy.... until the Preacher gave her the Bible. Making assumptions here.. she read the Bible, straighten our her life. Had a son, who became a Preacher himself and created his own legacy similar to the first Preacher by helping people through his ministry, which would have never happened if not for the Hooker.

The first time I listened to this song I, like most people, thought the hooker didn’t get a cross because she was sinful and looked down upon society. However this song magically hits you with a plot twist. Amazing.
