It’s not easy being green! The shocking potential of electric vehicles and batteries - a chat with Dr. Billy Wu, Senior Lecturer, Dyson School of Design Engineering, Imperial College London. Recorded December 2020.
The UK has committed to becoming net zero-emission by 2050 and plan to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles by 2030. Electric vehicles will therefore have to take the place of the traditional internal combustion vehicle but what are the challenges with doing this and can we actually do this by the deadline? This talk and fireside chat discussed where we are right now, the challenges for widespread electric vehicle use and what we need to do in order to fully decarbonise, as well as some anecdotal commentary.
Dr. Wu is a senior lecturer in the Dyson School of Design Engineering at Imperial College London. He co-leads the electrochemical science and engineering group which works at the interface between fundamental science and engineering application of energy technologies such as lithium-ion batteries, hydrogen fuel cells and supercapacitors. He joined Imperial in 2006 as an undergraduate in Mechanical Engineering, and then went on to do a PhD and post-doc in Earth Science and Engineering in 2010, before starting in the Dyson School of Design Engineering as a lecturer/senior lecturer in 2015.
