Ultraman Rising was a complete shock to me, and it is easily one of the best animated films this year, but it goes deeper than just a simple animated reboot.

For further context, this wasn't even made as an Ultraman movie in the first place. It was made as a labor of love for the ip, but it was supposed to have Ken be a sentai/Ultraman inspired superhero. The plot would have been the same. Just like Guillermo Del Toro, it was picked up by netflix, and because they have permission to use Ultraman, it was turned into an official Ultraman movie

That makes so much sense because it could be seen as an Ultraman movie just in name. It’s a very different spin on the character but I want to see more and it may inspire a lot more Ultraman fans

People complaining about Ultraman having no origin story should also realize the main series is very based on vibes alot of the time, origins are either hastily written to make way for the plot, or sometimes just shrouded in mystery.

There's so many lessons in Ultraman Rising but its very refreshing to see a movie about a young man becoming a dad, because it is EXTREMELY COMMON to have deadbeat dads or useless/negligent fathers OR just plain awkward fathers, and its EXTREMELY RARE to have movies that have GOOD FATHERS and this NEEDS to be more common in a time where there is misandry particularly in the West.
@halcyon.x
@halcyon.x 10 күн бұрын
is it really misandry though to portray what actually happens in real life? i totally agree that we need more positive father figures in media but to say portraying bad father figures in media is misandry is a reach. especially because ken’s father is an absent father himself but i wouldn’t say he’s misandrist propaganda, just a bad dad. edit: i may have misunderstood your comment a little bit but either way my point still stands
@ishu9074
@ishu9074 7 күн бұрын
I agree with you, it's really important to have more positive representation of fathers - they're crucial in a child's development, and in my eyes, are as important as the mothers. It was nice to watch a movie which shows the struggles men have to encounter when they become a parent, whether they wanted to raise children or not. But isn't it a little weird to say that misandry is common in the West? 😅 I'm sure there is, but isn't that a small minority which is only very vocal on Internet, and which is ridiculously tiny compared to the misogyny present in society?

On the topic of Kenji’s relationship with his dad: I feel like their relationship is not only about understanding that our parents are human and don’t always have it figured out but for parents to understand how important it is to be present physically and keeping open and honest communication with your child is. A lot of the tension between the two men comes from the fact that Kenji doesn’t know that his father has been watching over him the whole time and had been looking for his wife just like Kenji was. He can’t get back the years of no communication or visits but he had the opportunity to tell Kenji everything and didn’t until he had no choice, instead he accepted the backlash because he understood Kenji’s pain. Your kids only know the you they see and interact with. They don’t know your past or who you are unless you tell them

Honestly, this feels like, the antithesis of Minus One: first we have a reflection of history, in all of its horror and loss, a reflection of the past deeds of humanity, and how we need to fear what new power we’ve come to harness. Meanwhile, with Ultraman, it creates an idea of hope for the future. It reflects on what it means to progress, what it means to understand monsters, both literary and psychologically. We shall never forget the past, and we can hope and work towards the future, and instead of power creating new horrors, we can create better things, and that starts in the reflections we create in our fiction. From the horrors of war embodied in the radioactive titan, to the familial and innocence of the future embodied in a mother and child.

thats beasicly the dynamic for both franchises really, godzilla embodies the wrongs and evils of mankind how muhc damage it can make and that at the end of the day it can bring uppon its own downfall, with godzilla a lot of the time being a way to convey those problems and trow them at humanity to deal with, Ultraman its the oposite, an alien who comes to earth and learns to love the planet, seing the good of man and figthting to protect it representing peace, justice, friendship, love and hope and i love them both

This was the perfect balance between fantasy and reality. A lot of movies get too hung up on the powers or origins of the heroes, and everything else gets underserved. This gives you just enough context so you can focus on the characters without any lingering questions.

I was questioning why was I crying with a child’s and family movie. I’m not a mom, but Ami was such a incredibly written character even though she was a secondary character 🥺. As I said before I’m not a parent, I’m a teenager but her speech really touches my heart when she says: “it would be a moment when they don’t want toys anymore”. It reminds me that we grow up so fast and sometimes this growing won’t let us enjoy those moments until we realize that childhood doesn’t have a Time Machine to come back. I also noticed that Ken has a really egocentric attitude and personality (that Ami confirmed in the second interview). Because he was vulnerable in his childhood and didn’t saw much attention from his father or after his mother disappeared. So when he “gave them something to talk about” he just wanted to show people how strong he was but in the inside he was feeling lonely. He really hates when people think he can’t handle anything, so he is scared to ask for help. When he gets it tries to act normal but he (again sorry 😭 not enough connectors) is anxious in the inside, this is showed by Ami in the interview when Ken moves constantly his leg and arm, moves things stares nervously while overthinking, like if he’s being exposed by a interviewer showed (as I said before) vulnerable or little in a big responsable world. To conclude the end of his ego and relations with others is like a symbol of maturity and mental health cure, with also factors like Mina’s being shutdown and Emi’s growth 😢 Loved this movie and the animation had me crying for days😅 (sorry for long text and bad redacted or orthographic English is not my birth language) 😖

Plus, it's extremely standalone, so there's no need for prior information about other seasons. But if you are trying to expand your knowledge about Ultras, their history in the shows and the kaijus that they face, Ultraman Z is an excellent recommendation for just a short run down without being overly obsessed about the things in past shows. It has a great plot, great characters and best boy Sevenger. The both series have been dubbed in English by the Official Tsuburaya KZfaq Channel, where you can watch all the episodes.

The aspect i love the most about this movie is that we don't have a "bad guy" the kdf serves it's purpose as a defense organisation against the kaiju not some plot to be an organisation that takes over the world. Because we see the film through the perspective of the ultras we know that the gigatron isn't bad she's just protecting her egg. Imagine if we don't get to see it through the eyes of the ultras and saw it through the kdf, we just found an egg that belongs to a horrifying monster that could destroy our city. We bring it back and think of a way to use it but then the mother attack us during transportation. Then Ultraman showed up but rather being the protector we know Ultraman suddenly protect the monster that caused pain and suffering to the people of the city. From the kdf and people in the city perspective ultraman is siding with the bad guy aka the monster. This film draw a silver lining between good and bad because you can't point to the kdf and say they're the bad guy without some pointing at Ultraman and the monster saying they're the bad guy

Great analysis, the movie certainly has a simple coming of age story but full of heart. I really loved the movie, it was cute and had values that both kids and adults can learn from. Only nit picks I have is that the movie can still pretty much work by replacing the ultraman characters/kaiju, wished it focused a bit more on the human characters from the KDF more regarding their feelings on the kaijus and Ultraman as Ultraman is still very much a scifi show rather than just purely a hero show. Could be due to budgeting reasons or simplicity for the family, regardless the movie succeeds in doing what it wants to do. Enjoyable for all, young, old and new fans

this movie reminds me of the emotions i felt when i watched into the spiderverse for the first time. it's a nice modern twist on a superhero and it portrays an amazing message that both serves a great motive for the movie AND a meta narrative for us the viewers. Miles Morales is a black teenager boy who takes over being Spiderman, from Peter Parker a white man. The Spiderman series is about how anyone could be spiderman, they just have to be brave enough to wear the mask. Kenji Sato is ultraman's son, unempathic to most things in his life, only caring about his mom and baseball. He steps up to be Ultraman, a superhero who fights Kaiju. And then he's forced to raise a kaiju as his own child, giving him something else to care about in a world where he doesn't care about many things, especially not kaijus. both of these could've just been reboots of what has already been done before. Just turn those old stories into a new animation format and they do that and SO much more. They go above and beyond just having the title of an old superhero. They use these old superheroes to create a familiar but ENTIRELY NEW story.

Dude u neeeeeeed to talk about the series called: Mazinger z he is greatly known around Latin America and Japan in my opinion he one of the first founding fathers of the big Mach genre. And I heard if it wasn't for this series existing around 1972 toei probably wouldn't be here today.

I really hope that the success of this movie is strong enough to reach a spike that gets Toku to be adapted more in the Western lands. I would *kill* for an animated Power Rangers series by Flying Bark Productions; _think_ of the _smears!_

I couldn't even notice that this movie was american, this one would be so good as a franchise unlike other american adaptations like the monsterverse. But at the same time, it's good enough to be a stand-alone movie and is very rewatchable because the story is heartbreaking at some parts and the art style is very enjoyable

I actually would’ve preferred if Ken and his dad didn’t make up that fast. Sure he supported Ken but he did it from afar. And it seemed like his dad didn’t really support him as ultra man, at least to me. But, that’s just me

I really hated the 2 death fakeouts, like, it got so annoying, and took me out of the immersion. Also took importance from the sacrifice and buildup in the bomb scene. Either way pretty good movie.

Naw this is a really good take cause you’re right. I looked past them because the overall concept was great but it does downplay the concept of danger and death in the movie.
