I clicked on this video asking one question: "How the fuck did this guy get a near 30 min video out of JUST the Shoryuken?" I must say, after watching the video, I was soundly impressed. Not only did you convey a clear knowledge and understanding of not just the move, itself, but of fighting games as a whole. But, you also managed to keep it interesting and stayed on topic, EVEN WHEN there were numerous possible tangents available (Akuma's introduction, the Shippu Jinrai Kyaku's value, Dan, etc). You even managed to slip in the famous Daigo Parry without being distracted by it, in an almost blink-and-you-miss-it reference. Very impressive, sir. Well done.

One of my favorite Wild DP Changes was in KOF97, where Terry's Rising Tackle was given a DP input instead of a charge. It also had a weird low auto-block state, allowing for some very strange interactions like "snuffing out an Iori fireball just to punch him in the face on the way up."

I've been playing Street Fighter games for years since 1992. Out of ALL of the characters who have a DP, Sagat's Tiger Claw from the Alpha series is the most entertaining to watch, execute, and end a match! When the Tiger Claw carries over into a K.O., the slow motion effect is incredible. For that, even if I lose to an Alpha Sagat, and I'm K.O.'d by a Tiger Claw, I still to this day have a huge smile on my face. Just like the first day I saw Alpha Sagat back in 1995 at my local video rental store. Who in North Jersey rented from Palmer Video?😎🙌

There's a fighting game called Hisoutensoku where instead of gaining bars of meter you draw cards from a deck you assemble before the match starts. This can be supers, new specials and universal system mechanic utility cards. Pretty unique take on meter and luck that I haven't seen anything similar too.

Here's a few ways in which the Shoryuken can evolve: - have the visuals of the move convey the duration and nature of its invulnerability. It's hard for new players to understand what only top body invul means and which characters have which kind of invul. - have a Shoryuken that also counts as an overhead. This would make the move actually a useful risk to take if you're pressuring your opponent as well - make a chargable shoryuken, not like a Flash kick but something more simillar to a Focus Attack, where you can hold onto it, forward or backdash out of it or just let it rip. The idea of scaring your opponent with an incoming shoryu that doesn't demand an input but only for you to release a button, balanced by the fact that the enemy can see you readying it and can bait it, sounds like a lot of fun.
@kevingriffith6011
@kevingriffith6011 2 жыл бұрын
I can absolutely agree with your first point, but it's a bit hard to do. Some moves I could see a sort DBZ-style speed blur effect, where you can't see the character until they hit the apex of their DP, but I don't think that's a good solution for all of them. The second one I'm a bit iffy on, mostly because I'm not a fan of unreactable overheads and you'd have to give that significant start-up to make it fair. The last one I could see, sort of a "DP stance" where you can dash cancel it or let it rip but either way you're committed to it when you go into it. I can think of two ways to mix up the DP: The first would be a reverse-charge DP, where you have to hold *forward* for several frames before pressing back and punch, where you have to essentially play chicken with your opponent to use it in neutral. You could play all kinds of havoc with the risk-reward of it, like it being safe or even plus on block (maybe with a property that makes it less powerful on wakeup, where forward or back inputs don't matter so much). The other idea is to play around with the reward of a successful read with a DP. Maybe instead of being invincible it puts you in a special launch state if you get hit which would catapult you across the screen, and unless the opponent has the right read will cause them to drop whatever combo they were going to do. There's plenty of other ideas to be had here, but the concept is so entrenched in fighting games that changing it's fundamental DNA is going to be hard, people aren't going to like it.
@OccuredJakub12
@OccuredJakub12 2 жыл бұрын
@@kevingriffith6011 I like the forward charge DP, it would work well with rushdown or mixup based characters like a Cammy or Millia. I imagine it as a kind of kung fu backwards flipkick. The idea would be that it's not a good refersal from wakeup, because its antiair hitbox isn't the best, it can be punished on block even with the distance travelled backwards, doesn't give you offensive momentum and instead actually takes it away. But for damage, it'd have a good forward hitbox, be invulnerable to most attacks on frame 2 (so meaties could still beat it) and allow for combos on counter hit, because the enemy would be pulled in on hit or block. Plus, this would work for rushdown charas who are all about literally and metaphorically pressing forward all the time.

Regarding Strive's lack of throw invulnerability on a DP... I kinda like it. It makes Oki, when it comes up, into a quick round of borderline rock paper scissors if the person who got knocked down has a DP, since wake-up DP beats going for a combo, and a tick throw beats a DP, and I can't figure out how to make this a circle due to the asymmetry of the options. It's like if one person has rock, paper and scissors, but the other person has a brick, some cloth and a sword.
@thesilverranger1
@thesilverranger1 2 жыл бұрын
in this scenario i believe the option that beats throw is either backdash or simply mashing out or not doing anything, as in guilty gear, all opponents are throw invuln for the first few frames after wakeup (barring at least dps; i don't remember if any and all attacks apply to this concept)

The Shoryuken has so many applications and implications on fighting games: -It makes every knockdown a mixup. You already have wakeup block, meaty, and throw, but adding a Shoryuken makes it more complex because it's so powerful. -It's also a choice when used in combos. It does high damage and usually super cancels, plus most DPs will link from light normals due to fast startup (even in games where combos from lights are rare). But it has less range and worse oki, meaning you don't always wanna use it. -It's a good anti-air because of the damage, and the oki is better. But it's not the be all end all-it can whiff in some scenarios, it's harder to do, and it's still risky if it fails. -Even the fact that some characters don't have DPs is interesting. If your character doesn't have a DP, they may not have an invincible reversal or consistent anti-air, but it means that character plays differently and probably has different strengths. -A charge vs motion DP, as you noted, has different implications. A motion DP is more accessible and potent, but a charge dp is more rewarding and reliable. It's even more interesting depending on the character: some motion characters have charge-based DPs, or vice versa, which makes them even more unique. One last thing: I think DPs are kind of like the "shotos" of special moves. They work well for every aspect a character might deal with (anti-airs, reversals, combos, etc), but they're not the absolute best option for each of them. Plus, just like not every character is a shoto and not every shoto is the same, not every DP is equal and not everyone has a DP.

Guilty Gear (Xrd and Strive not sure about older ones) basically has the SF4 mechanic where if your opponent blocks the reversal DP you can use meter to make it safe but if it whiffs you cannot. Strive adding the throw vulnerability to it makes it pretty balanced mind games when your opponent is waking up IMO. Now with Baiken out, and her having a meterless frame 1 counter that can be made safe with meter (on whiff ofc) but still vulnerable to throws, we have some pretty diverse mechanics to play around with in the future.

It's embarrassing to admit, but I still don't know to do a consistent DP. The motions near impossible for me at times; in melty I can't get it at all, in SF4 it hardly ever comes out, where as in 3rd strike of all places, it comes out smooth like butter. I wanna learn. I wanna get better, because the hado and DP are such common motions that it's going to unlock so many more games for me. This sort of video inspires me a lot, and I thank you for it, edd.

this is probably something you've heard before, and either way I doubt it will help much but something that helps me get DP consistently is pressing forward and then just doing the hadoken motion (6236). once I started doing that I had no problems getting the DP out.

@Welverin
@Welverin 2 жыл бұрын
The responsiveness and precision needed can vary game to game. SF4 was harder to consistently do some moves than other SF games. So it's not surprising you would struggle more in that than other games. Ultimately, it's just going to take practice. Going into training mode and just doing it repeatedly maybe something to do. Turning on the input display (if it's an option) to see if you're getting it right or not would be a good idea.
