Those two old men are really friendly. They suggested that you slow down your drinking pace so that you can appreciate the beauty of Baijiu and it is less likely for you to get drunk, which is beneficial to your health. They won't take your money because in China, friendship is more important than money. Hutongs are not slums. In Beijing, people living in hutongs are old residents who have lived here for generations. They own the houses, so they don't need to pay rent. Given the housing prices in Beijing, these two old men are rich and don't lack money. They just want to enjoy the wonderful time with you in a friendly way. China is a country that attaches great importance to friendship, tradition, and family. I wish you a pleasant journey!

Most of your words are exactly right! But they are not rich people. Although the location of their house is very near the center of Beijing, they won't or can't sell house in Hutong for cash. That's why they don't look like rich man. And of course they can feed themselves, just normal standard.
@dakraol6680

@@klauslayard7469 If they are willing to sell their hutong houses, they will become rich. The price of hutong houses in this location is 40,000 US dollars per square meter. The average size of each hutong house is about 200 square meters. Do the math yourself.
@chengcheng2550
@chengcheng2550 Ай бұрын
@@dakraol6680 You don't know the reality of Beijing. These old people are not rich people. Many people in hutong houses only live in 10-30 square meters, and if these houses are sold, they may be about 150,000 yuan per square meter. The money obtained could only buy very small or suburban houses elsewhere in Beijing. From the clothes and mannerisms, they should have ordinary jobs or have retired, and their monthly income is not much, I estimate less than $1,000. But because they are actually ordinary Chinese (even poor ones in Beijing), their hospitality is all the more valuable, isn't it? ----- This comment is written by a 40-year-old living in Beijing

Watched a lot of china visiting videos after the 144 hours visa-free policy. I have to say this video is the excectly TOP1. You guys are the first youtuber who put perspective on the cityzen's real daily life and the culture communication. I didn't expect you learned a little bit Chinese, when I heared you say "chi le ma" (吃了吗/have you eaten)I was shocked. Most foreigners don't know this is the real way chinese say hi. A comment on Bilibili (your video is moved to this main video website in china) said your video shows the original situation when the cultural exchanged started. I am touched.Respect, enthsiasm and true heart could cross the language barrier. I wish for world peace forever.

As a Beijinger, I would like to tell you that if Chinese people, especially Beijingers, take the initiative to invite you to eat and drink, including smoking, it means that they think you are friends, do not give them money, because this kind of behavior will be regarded as contemptuous of them or you do not want to treat them as friends. The reason why Beijing Hutong only has public toilets is because these buildings were built over the past few hundred years. During the Ming and Qing dynasties in China, there were no underground sewage pipes. Now these buildings are all protected buildings and cannot be demolished or rebuilt on a large scale, so underground sewage pipes cannot be installed. They can only serve the public in the form of public toilets

This was on the local news every where, but I guess you don't know this as it is too shame to be reported in the UK? There are nasty people everywhere, no country or nation or race is special. I've been in UK for over 14 years. To be honest, I received harassment far more than people from any country can receive in China. However, I still see UK as a lovely and great country. I have seen many bloggers who travel to China, and almost none of them take the initiative to communicate and greet locals with enthusiasm like you do. However, you have done so and received positive responses. I am Chinese, and what I want to say is that the vast majority of Chinese people are enthusiastic. When you need any help, you can boldly try to communicate with people and seek help

As a Chinese born Canadian… Jack/Paige… you are both my most favorite dual travel vlogger. You both have an open mindset, giving yourself and us the opportunity to have the same travel experience whilst just watching your videos. It’s a breath of fresh air! We are living in a different world these days… having to live through covid… many ppl (Chinese) have been a victim, been demonized by the pandemic. I truly wish with your videos… everyone can be more open to other cultures, embrace one another’s language and food. Thank you so so much for your effort and time to explore, and learn the truth of China and the ppl. God bless you both!

You are lucky enough to experience a Beijing local's lunch. Peanut rice, pig's tongue, and meat jelly are often eaten by men in Beijing for drinks. Although they don't speak the same language, one of them brought out peanut rice from home, and the other one bought pork tongue and meat jelly from the neighborhood especially for you. I'm glad my fellow Beijingers showed their passion. I hope your video will show more people the real China.

This is indeed a relatively common drinking scene and habit in China. When drinking is paired with delicious dishes, it can not only add flavor, but also make the drinking process more rich and enjoyable. While tasting delicious food, chatting while drinking tea and enjoying the relaxed and leisurely atmosphere, this way also reflects the integration of Chinese food culture and social culture. Different regions may also have their own characteristic side dishes and drinking customs, all of which have unique charm.

This is so interesting. Going to a strange country and having a party while chatting, hahaha. They are very worried that you will get drunk. Drinking slowly and savoring snacks slowly is a relaxed life. It is worth mentioning that the hutongs there have a history of 700 years at the earliest, and many houses are cultural relics that cannot be demolished or destroyed, so they look very old. You can understand it as civilians living near Buckingham Palace, but they were not driven away and their houses were not purchased by capitalists.

Let me clarify one thing, the gentlemen in the Hutong are not short of money. If you know the value of their house, you will be shocked. In addition, in China, giving money directly is embarrassing, usually treating younger generations or their employees. If you want to express gratitude, you should send gifts.

Thank you for letting me know. This was our first day in china so still getting to learn the culture, but in the end, these uncles taught us a lot and was a very valuable first day. I don't think any other people arrive in beijing, go to the southern Hutongs and drink with the locals in the street on their first day 😅

@@JackAynsleyTravel But what's interesting is that sometimes you should express your willingness to pay first, which not only shows your understanding of etiquette but also allows the host to refuse you, thus better fulfilling their desire to show hospitality.😂

他们房子再值钱也变现不了吧,还是靠养老金过日子。当然给钱确实在中国文化里有点冒犯,除了压岁钱和红包以外。

I also highly recommend you to visit Huángshān or the Yellow Mountain. It is the most beautiful mountain in my opinion, which is famous for its beautiful scenery and ware stones. As a Chinese saying goes, “After visiting the five holy mountains I decided not to see the other mountains, but after my return from Yellow Mountain, I don't care even to glance at the five holy mountains.”

People in Beijing's Hutongs are very rich, and their houses are very valuable! A house is worth tens of millions of yuan!😊😊

Absolutely great video. Respect local people and culture, you will feel the kind and hospitality from them. Normal people are not hostile. In contrast, they are very welcoming and curious about foreign tourists because they don’t have a lot of chance to meet foreigners during daily life. There is a sentence in Chinese that as long as you visit us, you are our guest. They greet you and treat you just as their friends. Much better those teenagers in UK, aren’t they?😅
