The best parts of this movie is the dialogue between Hannibal and Clarice. It's absolutely captivating. Especially the scene between them where she was explaining how she was trying to save a lamb. The extreme close-up shots of both of their faces were excellent. Hollywood needs to learn that what makes a good movie is a good story, good dialogue, and great actors.... And not necessarily car chases and explosions.

I worked in a prison for 25 years and occasionally had to put a "no bite" mask on a guy similar to the one Lecter wore. Ours had a clear plastic shield in front of the mouth hole to keep them from spitting on people. I do not miss that job.

Hannibal gets all the attention in this movie, but can we talk about Buffalo Bill? Ted Lavine gave such a great performance. And it's funny because since this, he often plays cops, in roles like Monk, The Hills Have Eyes and Heat.

Great reaction. I've never seen you so invested in a movie. You were totally identifying with Starling from the outset and, like the rest of us, strongly drawn to the magnetic Lecter. I saw Anthony Hopkins on stage in London before he made this film and can confirm that he was every bit as electric in person as he is in this movie.

This movie is a masterclass in first person perspective. The POV shots really help you see things from Clarice's perspective. As well as show how she's viewed by those around her. In the novel you get to hear what Clarice is thinking. Which is something that's easy to lose in adaptation, but using the camera to put you in her shoes really helps compensate for that. You can tell a lot of thought and care was put in. RIP Jonathan Demme.

Sir Anthony Hopkins, who played Hannibal, used to disguise himself and sneak into movie theaters to gauge the audience’s reaction. One time, toward the end of the movie, he leaned forward and whispered into the ear of the woman in front of him. In his best Hannibal voice he asked, “Did you liiike it?” The woman naturally freaked out and ran out of the theater.

I read the book before seeing the movie, so i thought I was ready for the movie. 2:42 But when "Clarice Starling" walked up to "Hannibal Lecter's" cell, I was stunned. He looked at people as potential prey, didn't blink, and rapidly got into her head! 10:02 A bit after the turn of the century I was called to reclaim items I'd lent to a college classmate who had died of a heart attack. As precaution, I did the Vicks VapoRub smear, too. 25:43 Have you ever "had a friend for dinner"?

Great reaction! I remember seeing this in the theater back in early 1991. It was released in January, which has traditionally been a month that studios release films that they don’t think will do very well, but this one REALLY blew up the box office! Audiences just loved it! It also made the book a runaway best seller. Many weren’t sure it would be remembered at Oscar time since it had been released so early in the year, but it was, and it garnered several of the main awards. It’s a truly well-crafted film and I’m so glad that you grasped that! I love that you shared with us about your screenwriting class! All great movies start with great scripts!

Buffalo Bill was played by Ted Levine. This was both the biggest boost and detriment to his career, as no studio wanted to have Buffalo in their movie. It wasn't until he was hired to play the police captain, on the TV series MONK, that his career got a huge resurgence.

Absolutely riveting film, one of my top favorites of all time. Other people have pointed out how Hopkins fleshed out (heh-heh) his character: not blinking, talking in a flat monotone like HAL-9000, being extremely composed while every other prisoner was screaming and lunging at the bars... a brief and yet memorable performance. He´s on screen only 15 minutes and yet you feel how he dominates the plot as it unfolds.

Hey CAli, as part of your trek down symbolism lane. Take note of the fact that several times throughout the movie, Clarice is surrounded by much bigger men. In the elevator at the start in Quantico. At the postmortem exam in the small town funder parlor. It is meant to show how she is a female in a male-dominated world of law enforcement. Especially back in the 80's when the movie was based. When only one woman had graduated from the FBI training program.

So what is the deal with the cats? There is one looking out the window when Kathryn Martin is kidnapped and there is one in Frederika Bimmel's house that seems to be beaconing Clarice after she goes upstairs. Whereas Buffalo Bill has a nasty little dog. Seems to me these pets were intentionally inserted to say something symbolic but I have no clue what it might be other than maybe to say the director has a thing about cats. Or could it have been on the orders of some Robert-Mitchum-from-Scrooged-like producer who thinks it will enlarge the movie's demographic?

Elements of this movie were based off of multiple real life serial killers. Hannibal Lecter giving clues to the FBI about Buffalo Bill was based on Ted Bundy helping the FBI to capture Gary Ridgeway (aka the Green River Killer). Buffalo Bill making the woman's suit out of real women's skin was a reference to things that Ed Gein did. The ploy that Buffalo Bill used to lure and abduct Kathrine Martin was similar to tactics used by Ted Bundy for some of his abductions. Just to name a few.

This movie has a direct sequel called Hannibal which very few reactors ever watch. I don't think they realize it exists because there is a TV show called Hannibal about the same character, but it is a PREQUEL and obviously doesn't star Anthony Hopkins. Hopkins does star in the movie Hannibal, but Starling was recast and played by Julianne Moore. Hope you'll consider watching it - it isn't as good, but it's good enough.

Unlikely they had as many surveillance cameras in prisons as they do now. This was a prison for the insane. Such a clever move for Hannibal reading her background outloud inside the scene without having to go into full on exposition!
