Tariffs are not a bad thing by themselves. The problem with Trump's tariffs was that they were completely random and with no plan or thought put into them. Tariffs can be an important part of an economic strategy but just throwing around tariffs on a whim on whoever displeases you is not going to go well.

ALso anti-trust activity is very important for the economy. Megacorps might be good for those corporations but they slow down the American economy as a whole and make it far more fragile. Megacorp also can use bribery and uncouth methods without consequence which undermines meritocracy. Many "pro corporate" politicians aren't actually good for the economy. They just show favouritism towards the megacorps usually at the detriment of the economy as a whole. Allowing those corporations to screw over customers rather than fighting for their favor. Also by making it easier to hoard money rather than invest it. A pro-corporate policy is a detriment to the economy by allowing megacorps to rule by power rather than merit and allowing money to be hoarded rather than invested and circulated.

There's something to say to that, but it's sadly it takes a disastrous republican to get America to wake up. I've said many times that G.W. Bush's greatest accomplishment was that he was such a disaster that he was able to get a black man elected. so I'd probably give more credit to Trump than Bernie. Let's face it, if the SC didn't overturn Roe, the left would've stayed home and the GOP would've swept up in the 2022 midterms. We need to stop getting so complacent and progressives (which I am one) need to get more pragmatic and prove themselves to be a reliable voting base that the Democratic candidates fear the same way the GOP fears MAGA.

Oh, they absolutely would be... If they didn't require masters (and sometimes even doctorates) degrees in order to be even considered for the job. Oh, and then you are treated as a disposable machine while on the job. I would love to get one of these jobs.. If it wasn't both near impossible to get and both soul and body crushing.

And you have just hit the nail on the head! I'll give Biden a pass for not being as good a communicator as Robert Reich or Barack Obama; but the Democratic party is supposed to provide support for a candidate's weak areas and fill in the holes. Biden does not have a winning communication style and the Dems should be all over that with clear and memorablemessaging about his and the party's accomplishments when compared to the Republicans.

Rob, this is the first I've heard about any of this. Granted I don't follow politics, but we the public are not hearing anything about antitrust actions in the news. In my opinion the single biggest problem facing the US is the fact that every sector of our economy has become dominated by a handful of companies that effectively stifle competition and manipulate prices. If this is real I would love to hear more about what is being done. The US has needed this change since Regan destroyed the economy, perhaps a follow up? I for one would love to hear more.

As someone who wasn't that enthused about Biden in 2020, I have to say he did an impressive amount given how narrow the Democratic majorities were in 2021-22 (especially when compared to Obama's filibuster-proof supermajority). I wish he'd done more to persuade Manchin/Sinema on some crucial bills they blocked (voting rights, minimum wage, PRO act, etc.), but the choice between a moderately sized step in the right direction and a huge step in the wrong direction is obvious.

@tfodthogtmfof76445 ай бұрын
You are not alone. The economic mess of the 80s (high unemployment, high interest rates), the anti labor strides of the 90s, my pension got unilaterally “frozen” in the early 2000s. The continued lie of “you are just lucky to have a job” as companies continually posted record profits but refused to give anything to workers. 40 years of trickle down “piss on my head and tell me it’s raining” economics has gutted the middle class and screwed our generation. When I was a child my grand parents, aunts and uncles retired between 55 and 65. Almost all were retired by 60. There is absolutely no financial mechanism where I can retire any time soon and I am 59. The banksters have repeatedly screwed over my 401k retirement funds with their bubbles, tranches, and greed. They still take their mismanagement fee and gamble with my savings. There have been many years where my 401k remained flat even though I contributed 15% of my pay into it in hopes of someday retiring. It really makes me angry every time a politician opens their mouth or a corporate shill gives me a line about why I don’t deserve at least a Cost of Living increase. I have never had an annual raise that has kept pace with inflation in my entire work life always just excuses.
@birbluv95955 ай бұрын
I agree with these positive policies. The problem is for those of us on a fixed income: retired, Social Security, no pension, living on savings. My financial resources are not growing enough to keep up with the increased prices resulting from union benefits, jumps in salary - things which workers deserve, but only similar workers can afford their output.

When it comes to monopolies, I'm more concerned about the power companies. Where I live, your house has only one choice for power. My house has one company which charges crazy amounts. My neighbor has a different company that is more reasonable. But I can't switch companies because the houses in the neighborhood are divided up and you have no choice over it. I am stuck paying $300 a month for electricity, and my neighbor who uses approximately the same power...pays $120. Same thing for water, garbage, and internet.

Amazing thing is even with all those interest rate hikes by the federal reserve, US economy is still plugging along. That's not supposed to happen. Thankfully, the inflation, reduction act and the chips act has put in a lot of money with construction of those semiconductor chip plants. That also includes the infrastructure bill that was passed. Tariffs are paid by the importer. There are no Chinese warehouses on American soil. All cheap Chinese goods are assembled in China for American companies and imported by Americans. So Trump's big "up yours" to the Chinese was actually a big fat "UP YOURS" to Americans paying a new, hidden tax. Retailers just passed the extra cost on to American consumers.
