Ok so The Silent Sea has just dropped on Netflix and the Sci-Fi Thriller features an all star Korean Cast that pulls from the likes of Kingdom, Train To Busan and a lot more.
Set in a dystopian future we watch as the world has been turned into a dry desert that looks like your girl when she sees Tobey Maguire dancing. Sh'bow. We follow a crew led by Dr. Song as they travel to the moon in order to find humanity's last hope but in doing so they unearth a dark secret connected to Song's sister and the people she worked for.
Now one thing I love about Korean shows like this is that they put in place a concept where the thrust of the main story takes place but they also make the surrounding elements just as interesting. Whereas in Kingdom we had Ancient Korean Kingdoms battling it out in the midst of the Zombie Apocalypse, here we watch as the world has had to really resort to some sickening depths in order to survive. This includes euthanising animals, dividing up how water is distributed amongst the wealthy and it's basically a world where ou wish that sitting around watching Tiger King all day was the worst of your problems.
Early on in the series Dr Song is placed into a team led by Captain Han played by Gong Woo and they're tasked with travelling to the Lunar Balhae station in order to retrieve a sample. Upon crash landing on the moon, they make the perilous journey across the surface to the station and early on realise that something is amiss when they find a man who appears to have died from drowning.
To make matters worse, as they slowly start to go deeper into the station it's clear that something is stalking them and we get a lot of callbacks to movies like Alien as they try to get to the bottom of what's going on.
Now we discover in the series that the sample they're after is after called Lunar Water, a highly volatile substance based on H20 that grows like a virus and spreads liquid all over an environment upon being released.
However this is extremely dangerous to humans and if someone is infected with the water they will slowly drown from the inside out as as it spreads within their body.
The show depicts this beautifully and shows people basically plunging into a vast body of water as it completely envelopes their blood cells and lungs.

I watched it dubbed in English... wouldn't recommend. Voice actors don't convey the emotions as they do in Korean... same with any other language. Doing yourself a disservice listing to dubbed stuff.

Man, South Korean tv shows (and movies) are killing it. They have been much better than American kiddy movies and shows. They are viseral, mature, and play on themes in creating ways..

The pace in the first half is to let you absorb and immerse yourself into the landscape on the moon. It's to add to the sense of realism. The moon landscaping was breathtaking. As a big sci Fi fan, this is probably the best sci Fi production in years. The last one was snowpiercer which also happened to be a Korean production.

I agree. The slow pace of the beginning is building up the suspense. I love how artistically pleasing is the show, especially how they visualize the people drowning in water (it is a ironic scenario in the victims as they wish to swim in a body of water yet now they are drowning in a sea of water).

I would liken the pacing of the first half of The Silent Sea to that of Sunshine, when the crew of Icarus II board Icarus I. It was perfect.

Everything was ok except for for the fact that they keep wasting their time talking to the traitor instead of shooting. That was too melodramatic and based on the situation showed ineptness bordering to stupidity.

@@vallano8970 lol so true, the whole finding out scene is there because the show knows that we know they are going to make it somehow. But they want us on the edge of our seat and to find out why he betrayed them. But then we still don't fully know his motive. Is it for personal gain or for some other reason. The show didn't explain his motive, and the last scene with him shows him feeling regret over caging Dr. Song's sister and others and let them die. That's it. Yeah he's working for Rx but he definitely didn't seem like someone who'd kill just to make money. There are some mysteries left unsolved.

We didn't see Captain Han die. We only saw the lights in his helmet flicker off; so, it is _possible_ that he is still alive and was picked up in critical condition. It would be great in Season 2 to see him recover after being given a shot of the antibodies from Luna along with a drink of the lunar water. This could open the door to an incredible arc in the second season as international bodies come to understand the full potential of this breakthrough.

Let me explain it to you. We saw him being drowned in the water. Then when all got flushed out, eventually he got flushed out as well but we only see him at the end and Luna standing in front of him. This is a cliffhanger for any case. If the actor can't take it anymore then they just let him die there in the series and if he wants to continue, Luna will bite him and he still has his role for next season maybe seeing his daughter again. So the season two will be defined on how popular the series will be watched and rated now. Pretty sure its good rating so he'll be bitten 100% and see her daughter on Earth, maybe with drama that the daughter died earlier tho.

I definitely think he got infected but Luna can bite him too and that should help him to develop antibodies as well. We obviously can’t know/tell for sure, we’ll just have to wait and see.

Many reviewer think that Captain han was thrown out by the water. If he was thrown out, there would be ice all around him! He was likely rescued by Luna and brought outside the station. Don't forget luna is fast, strong and can swim in the water.. she already create a bond with him, that's she disappeared toward the end because she manage to go through the air vent to the other side to save Captain Han. Captain Han didn't die! There was nothing in the last scene that says he died. His suit just failed at the last moment before the ship arrive.

Hahahahahaha. You guys are really stretching it. She can take off her suit, get into the room soon to be flooded, carry him out thru God knows which portal, and carry him so fast, the 2 girls didnt even see him nor see any footsteps? She is either faster than the flash or quicksilver ON THE MOON. Just admit it, the show was awesome in the beginning and dropped off half way and was incredulous. No season 2 please.

Actually nothing would have frozen on the lit side of the moon as temperatures reach 260°F. The science throughout is terrible.

@@nilak.s617 That's exactly the point, wanting Capt Han not to die is saying the show is unrealistic. I think when we watch movies, or in this case a series, we can suspend a bit of disbelief about the science, BUT, this is not a superhero movie, so trying to go to great lengths and speculate how Han did not die shows that the whole show is unrealistic. Don't get me wrong, i enjoyed the series if i switched my brain off but i would have enjoyed it more if it was more realistic.

Good show although I totally agree that it dragged at times unnecessarily. Also, some of the characters started making some dumbass decisions which was frustrating. But I loved the mystery, the music was haunting and the drama, as usual In these Korean shows, hit the feelings.

Completely agree. Like in that final scene trying to escape I was losing my shit as they were just talking with the guy who worked for RX instead of immediately killing him and getting tf out. Not to mention when the one dude finally does shoot him he does it like 4 times in the chest instead of his very close and openly exposed head, leading him to be shot and killed as well lol. Some minor scenes also felt dragged on by like 2 min with characters staring at things extra long just because they wanted to hit that 40 min time frame. But other than that the show was really good.

I gave it a higher rating than any of the other recent Korean shows. Mainly because, sci fi for the win, and also the characters don't just scream at each other the entire time.

I just finished the series. It was definitely not the best show I've seen, but it was entertaining and suspenseful. I'm just disappointed that they made no attempt in trying to explain the actual science of how the water manages to multiply and why Luna is protected from it and why the other experiments before her failed.

So, Luna seems to have : -Superhuman speed, strength and reaction time -Oxygen independence or at least a temporary independence of breading it. -High resistance to all forms of radiation coming from the sun (unclear how advanced this resistance goes and if it includes cosmic radiation too, but it sure looks impressive) including the heat standing in direct sunlight (it is around 127 C in the sunlight). -Immunity or extreme resistance to pressure differences and vacuum. -Immunity or high or extreme resistance to radiating heat (does not seem to loose any body temperature in the shade of the moon where it is around -170 C).

*My only question* … I never came to understand the motive of the group that attacked and shut down the research center, locking down and getting all of the researchers killed. They didn't get any water samples or information from the data logs. Was their only purpose to shut down the facility? If so, why? That loose end was the only drawback to the series for me. They didn't have any knowledge of the cloning and experimentation; so, we can't say that they went there under a moral obligation to stop the way they were conducting research. They just showed up, shut everything down, created havoc, and then… left. But, maybe I missed something about that raid that was explained in the series. If anyone can explain it, I would be greatly appreciative.

I believe they have mentioned that the government or the higher ups (Director Choi) cared more about keeping the experiments, the illegal human testing, a secret rather than the results the researchers came up with since it will cause public panic. What I understood about it is that, they shut down the place and killed all of the researchers so that nothing about the illegal experimentations on the children gets out of the research center hence the raid.

They got the amazing results, seeing that Luna 073 was a success, but just decided to shut it all down because they were scared and it was illegal?? That makes no sense. You knew already! I want to say it was because 1 of the capsules broke in that other lab. That's what started the plants growing. Things got out of hand & they shut it down. Choi told Dr. Song they would retrieve the bodies later but they never did.

I really enjoyed this one. I thought it was very smart to not explain how lunar water works and just compare it to a virus since it acts the same way. As far as Luna being able to survive in space, it is a logical extrapolation from her being "infected" with lunar water. Since lunar water multiplies and water is made up of H2O her body is probably breaking down the lunar water into it's component parts and so she has a continuous supply of oxygen. Since she has cell regeneration, the cold of space would not bother her as her cells would be continuously regenerating. Unlike most of these type of shows this was well thought out and although the premise is kind of goofy it worked quite well.

Ok, so you think all of that is "smart"? If her body is breaking water into oxygen and hydrogen, where does she get the energy to break the chemical bonds in it? Where does she get energy for continuous cell regeneration? The only reason they do not explain how the water works is because it doesn't. It is just a plot device to fuel drama. I don't hate the show completely for these inaccuracies, but let's not look for excuses where there are none. There is such a thing as conservation of mass and energy. Matter cannot just spring up from nowhere. Neither can energy to propell a girl jumping up and down corridors and "electrolyzing" her own independent air supply. Now I guess there could be explanations involving some "interdimensional transfer" of the water from a dimension where the Moon is submerged in water, but the fact that not even the scientists on the mission ponder these questions and just say it's a "virus" is ridiculous. No scientist just forgets basic laws of physics (even if they aren't specifically a physicist). The fact that at the end the water starts to flood absolutely everything, even though judging by some of the first examples of water-tissue contact, there shouldn't be quite that much water, and multiplying so fast that airlocks explode (always specifically in the direction of the protagonists). Also, water gushing out of a vent on the surface of the Moon does not instantly freeze! Even the lunar water, which might have a bit different density and boiling point, but the effect would still be somewhere between water boiling away and a snow cannon. Definitely not an ice-plug so strong that metal buckles instead of the ice giving way. Also, a lot of the behavior of the characters is very illogical and on par with C-grade horror movies. The main purpose is to generate as much drama and action as possible. And the whole "air ducts" thing is especially ridiculous, since they can actually get to the most restricted areas of the station without any problems. I applaud the art department, camera crew and FX crew for making it all look amazing, but the writing is mostly a big mess.

If yall ever wonder how Captain han made it out eventhough it looked like he perished in the water, look at 6:25 bottom right, he was shot out too. Tbh we don't know if he even makes it out alive as his helmet lights were flickering and then completely turned off + he was motionless and 1 tear was dripping off his eye = typical death shots so yeah

I liked it all the way until the end, and then they decided to talk to the bad guy for a while when they were in such a rush to get out, and after that Luna was walking around the moon with no protection. Yes, I know she was altered, but walking around the moon is just too much.

totally agree, the most dissapointing ending I've ever experienced. Especially since the series seemed to want to be scientifically accurate, the fact that Luna can somehow withstand solar radiation, a complete vacuum, and extremely low temperatures (water freezes instantly) makes absolutely no sense.

And all life needs oxygen so I assume she’s able to extract the oxygen from the water in her? It’s a little far fetched. I was so confused but I wanted more so I could understand what happened there. They could have the sequel explore what’s down in the abyss where the lunar water comes from. I’m curious what else could be down there. Lol Korean films are doing such an amazing job. I just had little criticism but I am loving their films in recent times. I was hoping they would do a Sci-Fi series eventually and this series definitely gave me aliens or space horror vibes. I hope to see more Sci-films from Korea. Haha

Surely Lunas body is full of lunar water, but she breaths like a fish. Everything she needs to survive is within her body. Especially with the healing powers. It showed them doing experiments on a fish and it started breathing too.

@@devileye90 I think this was the man that works with with Choi. He said that he saw the other ship coming into orbit, probably the SAA. The Captain said to give him time, like stall them from landing.

I understand that some things are left unexplained as a clifhanger, but I do think some loose ends should have been tied up. There were alot of storylines that didn't get finished, as well as not fully explaining anything. There was alot of tension building around the station, the lunar water, Luna, the traitors, why people were chosen... and nothing was fully explained in the end. I know answers lie in season 2, but I think the plot points needed better writing.

unique and a breath of fresh air in the wake of all Netflix dramas out at the same time! I'm really hoping for more in depth explorations of the whole world of the show. Their seemed to be way more than just the main secrete our crew tries to figure out. the visuals and of course the character development of each of the main cast I thought was done well along with the story telling! each character really got flushed out for the amount of time that passes I could have had more time with them even haha and there individual backgrounds, but I stayed intrigued till the very end really hoping for a season 2 !

Just finished episode 4, by far my favorite line was at the end. The captain and dr song look down the stairwell obviously covered in plants and dr song says “those are plants”. Amazing.

Loved the series. One gripe I have is that they said the Lunar Water continues to expand as long as the host is alive, but when the host dies it should stop. But in the sublevels where they discovered the cache of samples, the 'water' multiplies endlessly down there but theres no living host to allow it to. Just a dead body.

I loved how this lunar water created so much life to plants and well Luna yet was humans biggest enemy and threat. My biggest question was the lunar water a virus or was the virus in lunar water because when soochan first was exposed it wasn't to the water it was contact with a dead person who had the lunar water infection. I also wish they actually showed up the silent sea on the moon.

I watched this series. The single and biggest inconsistency I found was how much the Luna water drop converted blood drop. The example they used was about 1 gallon of Luna water could be created from one drop of (living) blood. However, this changes by plot needs throughout the series. At one point an infected body produced endless amount of Luna water, yet others it was just enough to drown the infected body. Besides this one inconsistency piece of logic lore of the film, the rest was fairly well done. A few times the pacing was stretched a little absurdly, which I think was more to fill in episode time, so it can make the storyline weak at points. However, any questions on motivations as to why characters do anything that may seem initially stupid at the time, it is cleared up somewhere later in the series. (Such as the astrobiologist taking off her helmet in the station when it seemed like there may have been a biological outbreak of some kind. She had already determined it was not, but it is not revealed until later, on how she knew.)

Very well done series. Of course not perfect but nevertheless was very enjoyable with the emotional, mystery and sci-fi aspect. Same like Squid Game where I'm fine both ways whether it just ends here or it will be picked up for a second season.

Enjoyed the Series throughout. Don’t know what’s wrong with IMDB rating as 6.9. People are comparing this to Alien Covenant, but this was more like Prometheus with Lunar Water.

I heard mixed reviews early on, but decided to watch it and ended up watching it. Wow! I loved it as it makes you think.. What if. The theme of how some scientists get too caught up in a "cause" leads them down unethical means of accomplishing their goal. This is reality seen over and over in real life. I did get a little confused near the end and thank you for your review as it clarified what happened. I'm glad the creators of the movie did not spend all their time on horror scenes like many film makers do these days. This is definitely a mature and a thinking persons film. Kudos to the Koreans.

Honestly, i enjoyed the beginning of the show and started to get pissed off and trying to suspend my disbelief even though i enjoyed the show: 1. Who saved the Captain when he was below when the elevator crashed, he was at less than 1% oxygen and don't tell me the other 2 had time to jump down THAT far and got him up in time when already fainted. They didn't even bother to explain that and the Capt didn't even ask who saved him. 2. They didn't bother to wear gloves or helmets(helmets fine, plot armor to allow us to see their handsome faces and perfect hair), despite not knowing how the contagion spreads, there were doctors and scientists for God's sake. 3. The lack of urgency or carefulness, i mean. the fat guy just walked into the command centre AFTER knowing the traitor killed his colleagues? No guard up? And where was the communication? He was fighting WITH his headset on and the others couldn't be bothered? When he died, did anyone even ask, Hello? Where are u? Are u ok? Wat's going on at the command centre? Nada. 4. Why did RX wait 5 years to go up and steal the sample? They could have gone up ANYTIME, im sure they could have hacked their way into the ship, they have space shuttles and spies! Why did they have to send their men together with the team? To make things more difficult i guess, they could have waltzed up 1 year before and spent that amount of time to capture or get whatever they want. 5. Don't even get me started on super 073, which seems to be able to do everything but can get her leg crushed by just a door, but damn, she can breathe in space, not get cut by the moon floor and defies gravity. Some say she saved the captain by speeding her way in and out without the girls' noticing. 6. The ending.............. please no more. It's not easy doing a Sci Fi show, i can agree, but if u want to do something, do it right. We can take a bit of fiction here and there that defies a bit of logic, but try to be realistic at least. If they want season 2, i really don't know what story they want to tell, Human water farms? Cloning again? And?

I loved the show....Terrifying when that when sun set on the station, omg, and the water bursting out and forming the icicles. I really wanna kow what they will do next. The same people that helped destroy the world are the ones finding a way to make it work again and at the same time will use that result to capitalize off of it... makes my brain hurt.

The ending was too nebulous. Was it a good guy ship or the mercenary ship? Did Luna go onboard? Did they make it to the other space station where they thought Luna would be safe? Did the lunar water make it into the right or wrong hands? Does Earth have oceans again? How did they do it? How did they make everyone on Earth immune to the lunar water? Way too many unanswered questions to be considered a satisfying ending.

I just finished the series. I thought it was great. The only minus was a few of the voiceovers for some of the characters were a little bit mailed-in. The acting was really good so it would have been nice to understand Korean and watch it in its pure form. lol. I'd give it 8.5/10. Good stuff!

You can. Click your settings to the original language & read the subtitles. Trust me, you won't be disappointed. Squid Games should be watched in its original too. Their voice overs were the worse!

So here is my theory 😅, Captain actually survives as Luna gave him her space suit and rescues him and as we see Luna walking on the moon, she feels love for her home. For her, moon itself is her home and Dr. Song eventually realises that Luna can survive on the moon as she did from the past 5 years as she is programmed for the same. Maybe this is the start of life on Moon. The people who returned on the ship back are Dr. Song, Hong and the Captain. Just a theory, what do u guys think?

Luna did not save captain Han, he was flushed out by the water, check 6:25 and keep your eyes on they very bottom right of the screen, you will see his body being thrown out by the water

I disliked it. Especially when the characters had MULTIPLE times to shoot, but instead they aim for like 2 minutes and never shoot. They had a chance to shoot the girl, just stood there doing nothing. Had the chance to shoot the traitor guy, that ended up with the dude with common sense getting shot Also, the girl was portrayed as a monster at first and none of them were scared except for the overweight guy?? i want their bravery

@@MarK-nj8vr No they found a body that looked liked it could have drowned but that clearly was impossible so the logical conclusion is that what ever killed him acts on the respiratory system in a similar way to drowning. Case in point if they did not take their helmets off that guy wouldn't have got infected by the airborne pathogen and died. So to summarise. They were on a mission to collect an unknown biological sample from a station whos entire crew died under mysterious circumstances. After discovering someone who died of an unknown illness and discovering that the radiation deaths were a lie, the astroBIOLOGIST who doesn't trust her employer at all, who just got proof that they lied to her, decides to take off her helmet to search for the unknown biological sample ... Thats fucking stupid and you know it.

@@ChibiViolin The signs were evidently and solely oxygen deprivation due to water entering the lungs. There is no "acts on the respiratory system in a similar way to drowning", it's impossible. Not to mention that whilst they knew they needed to recieve an unknown sample they had quite literally no way of knowing that there would be some airborne pathogen when all readings said otherwise. Let alone that it could be received from light contact with a dead body. At the end of the day It's incredibly easy to say as a viewer that you would of just left the helmets on but in reality they were given no sufficent reason to think that wearing the helmet would be a necessity let alone some previonsary measure. And even if they WERE wearing the helmets the threat of dying was still there considering with even the slightest exposure to a wound they would've been fucked, in a addition to Luna. I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure even wearing your helmet with your suit leisurely uses up the oxygen tanks. Which would of been a complete waste knowing there's a limited amount of oxygen to refuel with at the station. So if this is the case it would make your entire arguement essentially void. Regardless, you can think it was a bad decision if even just to not wear the helmets for a bit longer, sure. But I don't think it's so drastic to the point where it's unbelievable that in that situation people would decide to do that.

@@vallano8970 Whats impossible is a man naturally drowning to death on the moon during the middle of a water shortage. Thats it. Everything else you said is pointless. As soon as they encountered that body, learned the truth about the radiation, and considered their mission, taking off their helmets would be stupid. Turned out it was.

man i was thinking exactly that 😭 even if none of the signs pointed to a respiratory illness id caution the crew to keep their helmets and suits on until the coast is completely clear - refuelling that oxygen tank seemed to take seconds anyway. just knowing that the station isnt safe and filled with dead bodies 😐

Is luna073 the gold fish as shown in the experiment or was she just an ordinary kid with the goldfish DNA injected into her body? Is that why she has gill on the side of her jaw? And how did they managed to clone so many of her? So which means the real Luna is already dead, the one that survive is just one of her clones(the 73rd)? And if she's just a combination of human and goldfish DNA's, how did she gain inhuman strength/speed and can breath in space without oxygen? I have so much questions just about Luna alone. I kind of understand everything else with the plots but the girl Luna kind of confuse me since I'm not a sci-fi person and don't know anything about genetics. Btw the girl who played Luna is so adorable and a great actress. She reminded me of the girl in train to Busan. They have similar facial features. Both shows broke my heart by killing Yoo Gong and only let the women and kids survived.
