I can’t believe that people who ‘won’t’ pay for this pattern feels the need to rag on those of us who will pay. And coming from ‘me’ who does the math really well for my own designs I find this baffles me because I ‘understand’ how much work goes into doing the designing thing. I still have two ufo’s waiting for me to finish formulating. And one of them for six years now. Geez! If you don’t want to pay for the pattern just be kind and keep it to yourself. Some of us just want to knit without having to labour over the arithmetic and geometry for god’s sake! My hat is coming along nicely 😊

I am knitting my very first Musselburgh while watching this! I loved learning the cast on - I started as a crocheter and this is even neater than a crochet magic loop because the stitches in the loop are less bulky. I used to think hand knitting should be complicated: why spend all that time knitting something that looks like it came from a shop? But plain stockinette can be so relaxing and meditative, "plain" patterns are the best to show off beautiful yarn, and there's always value in spending time creating the stuff we wear instead of treating it like consumables. So I'm completely sold.

I love the fact that you pay tribute to the designer. Also, love the sweater you are wearing.

I just finished my first Muselbourgh hat. We were flying from the west coast of the US to Europe. I wanted mindless knitting for planes, trains and relaxing after site seeing. I knit the crown increase prior to the trip. This was a dream to knit. I was con that 18.5 inches of stockinet would be mind numbingly boring. It was not. I almost made the mistake of making the crown too large. I looked at the photo and trusted the pattern. Thanks for the clear review.

YES!! I felt the same way. Was wondering what was so special about this hat. Didn't look all that exciting to me (I only knit super plain stuff to start with because my style is very minimalistic). Started it to get rid of a very soft fingering yarn and to see what the fuss was. Took forever to finish as it was my "wait for the kids" car knit. I got excited towards the end and absolutely loved it the second I put it on. Out of my approximately 25 hats (yes, I have a hat problem) this is my absolute favourite! Partly it is the fabric and colour I got from the soft (with 10% cashmere) fingering yarn but it all comes together with the pattern. The double and quadruple layers are just so good! I am about half way with my next fingering 100% cashmere version and will make many more!

I’ve knit 7 of them and love it. I started doing a purl row at the junction between the two sides to help it turn evenly. I also do a k2p2 pattern for 2-4” so each side has a cuff.

Ysolda is brilliant. I was a beta tester for Ravelry so I’ve seen countless “it” patterns come and go and this one is worth the praise. I can tell this hat is going to be the only subzero friendly hat I will have knit in the 20 years I’ve been knitting and it’s showing off the luster of the yarn I’m using so beautifully. And as someone that’s been on Ravelry since the start- there’s no one more annoying to me than the “ugh I hate trendy patterns” people. Find real problems lol

I didn’t understand the hype until I knit one for myself. It is the best fitting hat that I have ever knit and it is nice and warm for the damp cold Atlantic Canadian winters. I’m casting in a striped one as my Christmas Eve cast on.

I have made 6 until now and I am obsessed with the simplicity of the pattern and the great fit of the hat.

I'm currently knitting my fifth one, with yarn on deck for a sixth one. It's a wonderfully simple design that can easily customized based on your imagination. I knit one with stripes, and one with colourwork on one half of the hat. I like having the option of using the yarn I have/want instead of trying to source the recommended yarn or trying to find a substitute that might work.

I did knit this pattern! It's one of the only viral patterns I've made - I've never made a Ranunculus :o I tend to be hype averse, but I think the fact that it does the math for all the gauges for you really sold it for me. Yours is so creative, I love it! I just did a monotone hot pink.

I am from Finland and we have been knitting similar tube hats for decades, this is really the best kind of construction for the really cold winters we northerners experience :). So I will not be knitting this exact patter, but I am making 8 very similar ones for Christmas, people love them and the feedback is always "best beanie ever"! The yarn I use is 70% wool 30% alpaca.

As another commenter said, I am also "hype-averse", but I tried this one and I LOOOOVE it so much. I've made many of them, and love using my sock-yarn scraps, for it. I hate yarn waste and this pattern is BRILLIANT for using up your sock yarn scraps. Too fun. Try it.

Thanks for your review. I found this hat and tried about dozen times to cast on then found a great tutorial and snap just like that it clicked. I have knit 5 now and given them away, they are so easy, once you get past the first one.

This is a great vid and Ysolda is an amazing designer!! She is so very good at explaining not only how to adjust her patterns but also why it works!! I love all of her designs that I have knitted, including Musselburgh ❤. I used it most recently to use up of a bunch of fingering weight sock yarn and then I over dyed it and it is wonderful!! It fits perfectly, is super warm, and exceptionally frugal because I used up scraps that were otherwise languishing in my scrap bag!! Voila!!

I've made two Musselborough hats. I have really enjoyed them. I made them with different colors on the inside and the outside. They're fun to make and wear.

I have knit several of these. I love it for social knitting and also for knitting round and round while watching Netflix or other such programs. I donate most of them. Great way to use up leftover yarn and you can get creative with colour placement.

I'm an Iowa girl and completely agree that most hats just aren't warm enough for our winter, and it's too loose to keep the winds out. I brought this pattern awhile ago but haven't made one yet. You have helped me start one 😊

Just finished my 3rd Musselburgh hat! About to cast one #4. I was glad to pay for the pattern to support the designer. It is great for waiting room knitting, and any other place I go !

I knitted 8 of these hats and just started my 9th. They are for friends and grandchildren. They are all different yarns and customised to the person colour wise and lengths, I’ve even added tiny glass beads to a couple of them. I love this pattern!

I just purchased and finished my first Musselburgh the week of Thanksgiving. I really love this pattern. I can make it as easy or complicated as I want it to be. I did a helix stripe on side A and some self striping crazy stuff to happen on side B and it came out gorgeous.

I knit my first one this year....my grandson asked for a hat in Edmonton Oiler colours. I knit one half with variegated yarn, the other half with a couple of stripes thrown in. I will make more in the future 😊

I just discovered the Musselburgh hat a few weeks ago, and am knitting my first one now. I like that I don’t have to swatch before starting the hat, and it’s a great “social” knitting project. I can chat with people while I’m knitting and not have to worry about counting stitches. Simply love this hat!

Great, helpful review. I was introduced to this design concept years ago in an Elizabeth Zimmerman book. I'm intrigued about Ysole's design with all the gauge calculations. I'll look into it for my next "potato chipey" knit ❤😂

I got it, made one already for hubby and am now making mine. I love this pattern! Oh and i have people waiting in line for more as well. I'm using Patons Kroy sock yarn with a 2.75/size 2 knitting needle for mine. I plan on using different yarns as well.

Great breakdown. I've made 5 so far because YES: there are so many possibilities re: yarn choice and pattern (solid, striped, ribbing). And each hat not knit in one yarn can be worn a few ways. It is truly a worthwhile knit and I'll be making a number more.

I have made 4 and cast on 5-7 last week. Take a guess what everybody is getting for christmas ;-) I made more complicated hats before but this one is just so comfortable! Plus i'm a bit stressed out right now and it's pure comfort knitting.

I am still working on my first hat. The initial pinhole cast on made me crazy. I used sock weight yarn on size 3 needles and am loving how it looks. I will finish, hopefully this year. I made another with a provisional cast on and it looks the same.

I have made seven so far and I always make them the same way. I use self striping Felici yarn from Knitpicks. I knit half of the hat with several different Felici color ways so that each stripe color only appears once. So it looks like about 25 different colors of stripes. Then the second half is a solid color. I think this is the most special and amazing hat in the world because I make each one unique with different colorways or using them in a different order. People can wear the stripe side out or the solid side. I will definitely continue to make them!

O ya i''ve made a few, 14 so far, and plan on my next being a scrappy. I LOVE LOVE LOVE this super simple, tator chip knit. I'm still trying to find a good way to do the ends. It's fiddly but as you see hasn't stopped me yet. Great mindless knit. It's a great canvas too if one wants to play around. I haven't yet but definitely debating it.

I hand spin so having a pattern that I don't have to have to worry about the yarn meeting gauge exactly is a plus. I don't have to Fiddle with different needles, just get a fabric that works the best for the yarn. I made a lace weight yarn hat that wasn't on her chart but I used her chart to figure out the stitch ratio for each size and gauge. It was very helpful. I also knit one long enough that it could be used unfolded as a short scarf for my husband. The other plus is as a hat it could be extra slouchy, doubled up to the crown, doubled and slouchy or folded twice for super extra warmth for the ears.

I have made one - you're right, it's easy to make it a little too big because you're second-guessing yourself/the pattern, but I made it for my sister and she has a big head, so hopefully it works! It really is a magic pattern, and you helped me put my finger on exactly why!

This is a great review! I came across this on Ravelry and I do plan to make it. I did wonder if the price refected something complicated in the knitting, but I did see that it is multi-sized, multi gauge. I'm glad to know it is an easy knit! I'm making the 1898 Hat which is a little complicated in ways. This pattern will be great because I have lots of kids and grandkids through my boyfriend and this pattern will be great for them, all living in Montana.

I too have seen Everyone talking about / making this hat. When I first started knitting, Elizabeth Zimmermann books were fabulous! E. Z. Has a pattern, start at brim, work to crown, pick up & repeat. Then I purchased quite a few Carol A. Anderson (Cottage Creations) patterns, hat start at crown, knit a long tube, decrease. I’ve made several of these, different yarn weights, needles, etc. Fast forward, Ysolda !!! She truly is a gem, love her “why & how” explanations! I’ve been debating whether to get this hat pattern, as I’ve “mathed” all my previous iterations, BUT… I will probably get this pattern anyway, show of support! I prefer 9 - 12 inc/dec points on my hats, but I LOVE that Ysolda has the math “built in”. The last 3 hats I made, Helically knit using scraps! Check out Ysolda’s Garter St fingerless mitts pattern (Ravelry), very FUN !! Glad you like this style hat! Agree DPs / beginning can be fiddly, but … the end result is worth it!! Thanks for this, reminding me to cast on another hat, easy & nice to pick up whenever (as are socks!!), Happy knitting!!

Never heard about it, and I don't use ravelry. But I love when designers let you in to the process, so it is not only "black box" following of the pattern! Might have to check it out at some point!

My partner is very fussy about hats, even shop bought ones! He really doesnt like hats that are too tight so when I have tried to knit for him, I've made it too big. I think this pattern could potentially work for him (as long as gauge swatch doesn't lie to me!) and also be a great gift because of the foldable brim. Thanks for the recommendation ☺️

Oh I'm from Québec also and yes we sure have had cold winters. Except for last year oddly enough. I first heard about the Musselburgh hat from the Crazy Sock Lady and as time has gone by I am becoming more and more intrigued. I have already favorited (is that a word?) it on Ravelry and will be purchasing it soon for sure.

I haven't knit one and honestly wasn't sure about the pattern. It doesn't get nearly as cold here as where you live, so I thought it might be too warm. Now you've explained the options, I might think about doing a looser gauge and smaller size and see what happens. After I finish a few other things.

I have made a few of the Musselburghs but I do get a little frustrated with the endless stockinette, which is funny because I usually like that lol. Too much of a good thing, I guess lol. I like the stripes on yours! My go to hat is similar in look, the Oslo by Petite Knit. It's good to do a swatch with it though. I'm currently on Oslo #8 lololol, it's definitely a good gift knit. That's why I don't mind doing a swatch; I have a little memento of the hat I gave away.
