Two years ago when I started watching your videos for the wonderful charcoal "big cats" series I would never have guessed that we would get to watch you evolve into oil paints and *color*!!! It gives me hope for our species. 🙃

For fair flesh tones, I simply use Venetian Red; it is made of hematite (the same material that was used in Renaissance to produce red chalk drawings). It is a super permanent pigment and when you mix it with white, it shows pink undertones. In Renaissance there was a color named Cinabrese which was just a mixture of Venetian Red and white pigments, and it was commonly used for skin tones.

Venetian Red or Mars Red are common names of most paint makers, both are PR-101. 'Venetian Red' didn't exit during the Renaissance, Cinnabar/Vermilion were in common use. Some versions were of unstable permanence and replaced by Cadmium Red in the early 20th century. Venetian/Mars Red is the synthetic red iron oxide modern version of PR-102 the natural mineral Red Ochre along with Yellow Ochre PY-43 the earliest known pigments used.

@@pollyester6627 Venetian Red (aka Sinopia, natural red ocher) was used as a pigment since prehistoric times. Mars pigments were developed during the eighteenth century. They are not the same.

@@nickm7911 Right, seems we are both sort of on the same page. Some confusion in the color names, as I have a tube of Gamblin Venetian Red, it reads... pigment: Synthetic red iron oxide PR101 as the Color Index Number. Williamsburg paint doesn't make a Venetian Red. They label it Mars Red PR 101. According to the Color Index Number they are the same pigment. Williamsburg Red Ochre PR 102 Natural Iron Oxide, like the prehistoric pigment. The tube is rather heavy, it's less chromatic and much more opaque than Gamblin Venetian Red PR 101. Apparently at Natural Pigments they maintain a truer version of Venetian Red using PR 102, their Mars Red is PR 101.
@nickm7911

@@pollyester6627 Yes. I think the confusion comes from the fact that many modern paint companies often use historical color names to describe hues, even if the substance used to produce the color differs from what the name originally referred to. Mars red is the artificial counterpart; i.e., pure synthetic iron oxide without added clay minerals (such as gypsum, kaolinite, silica, calcite, quartz, etc.). By Venetian Red, I meant the naturally occurring red ocher. You can buy this pigment from Italian companies Dolci and Zecchi-Fantuzzi or Natural Pigments in the US, but they are nearly identical because they are all mined from the same quarries in the Veneto region.

Excellent piece of art. I like you trying out colors for this one. I think you should give a try to Zorn's palette I think you'll love it. I'm trying it myself atm since I'm working on an artwork myself after ages but I'm working with watercolors instead of oils. I usually use titanium white, vermilion red, yellow ochre/Naples yellow and burnt sienna for flesh tones. Really eager to see the finished artwork. Also how's your mentor's artwork doing? I remember seeing the unfinished masterpiece in a past video of yours. Keep up the good work Carly :D Sky's the limit :D

Your paintings are just so Fabulous. Question: I started painting last year with water colours then after a few weeks went into an art shop to get a starter kit to start painting in oils. The proprietor recommended my using acrylic paints instead as the paint dries much quicker and I have been happily using acrylic paints for about a year now. Just completed my first portrait of the girl with the pearl earring, but could not mix the colour to get the skin colouring I was looking for. Using your four paint colours your results are just fabulous and I now know what colour paints to buy in acrylic paints. Each time I complete a new painting I am amazed at how much I learn with each process. Thank you so much.

Hi, I'm not Carly, but I'm a professional artist whose worked in acrylics painting portraits. Was your question going to be what color should you get to replace the Italian Pink? I used to use yellow ochre, alizarin crimson, ultramarine blue and a mixing white. My secondary caucasian skin tone palette was raw sienna, alizarin crimson, ultramarine blue and titanium white or the mixing white. I hope that helps. Happy Painting!!! 😃

Hi Carly, great feminine artwork! Have you ever considered drawing / painting the whole female figure from the front? It's sad that artists sometimes feel embarrassed or hesitant to create art like that, because of how others might perceive it. I recently drew a nude pregnant woman holding her belly. Incredibly pure and beautiful. It's like all distractions are removed, and you get pure human nature and beauty right on the canvas.

You're very gifted; your work is lovely! Forgive me, though, if I write that your skin-colour mixture is too complicated: skin colour is orange!!! It's a low-chroma orange. Most people can be represented with burnt sienna and white. Some people are redder-add a touch of (any) red-others are more golden-add some yellow ochre pale. To turn the form, darken it with umber (burnt or raw, depending on how grey you want the turning tones to be). Some people are darker-use less white in your mixtures.
