There was a big debate over flag burning in the early 90s and it popped up again in the early 2000s. They did try to get an amendment to ban burning the flag passed, but it failed pretty spectacularly. The whole "passing an amendment opens a floodgate" thing is pure nonsense. It's extremely difficult to pass an amendment for a reason and we've gotten a new amendment passed an average of every 20 years or so. And ofc just passing the amendment means nothing - it has to be ratified by 3/4ths of the states in order for it to go into effect. There's still amendments out there that have been passed, but haven't been ratified. It's amazing to me how little a lot of political commentators know about our political system and the constitution in general. And in this case, that includes the Simpsons - although they usually do it from a "isn't this whole thing ridiculous?" angle. We got the same kind of push-back when we were trying to get an Article V convention to get an amendment to ban money in politics and say that money isn't speech. It was ridiculous and half of the politicians we were talking to had clearly never even read the article in question. Well, I say "were" that effort is still ongoing. I've just kinda given up personally after engaging with the politicians in my state.

I'd say that more than me not getting it, the Simpsons pretty much educated my sense of humour. But of course, it's difficult to mark the line of when I understood them and when I didn't, because through my childhood and early teenage years they were on repeat on Spanish TV.

Might have something to do with getting rid of a well-written well-loved character, who was a pretty big part of the cast, because people thought his inclusion was racist. Despite all the other stereotypes of white ethnic groups that they left in. Not really. They were pretty neutral. They mocked the Republicans a lot, and they mocked the Democrats a lot. That last one with the amendment was pretty neutral as it presented both the left and right in a pretty bad light.

@@mellowyellow6572 I would say choose the lesser of two evils but that is a bit difficult when both sides seem equally bad. However it does seem a little easier to chose now because of that SJW crap that the Democrats keep pushing everywhere. It wasn't so bad at first but now they are just trying to shove it down people's throats. That is my opinion.

It would have been true back thirty years ago. It's not true anymore. The GOP one didn't change at all...in fact it only got worse. Much worse.

Never has anyone denied that Nuclear energy is extremely efficient. Only that it is highly risky and leaves toxic waste nobody knows what to do with for literally dozens of thousands of years. And if you would actually price in those things - as it would be fair to do - Nuclear energy wouldn't be cheap at all. Very much the contrary.

People have a problem with nuclear power because of Uranium. Y'know, that super deadly radioactive material that produces toxic waste? A fantastic alternative to Uranium reactors are Thorium reactors. Thorium is much less dangerous to handle, produces more power, is more abundant, and all it needs to get started is a little Plutonium. Replace Uranium reactors with Thorium reactors, then combine that with an abundance of green energy sources. Congratulations, you've just solved the energy crisis in your country and significantly cut down on pollution.

Not gonna lie, a government run by a team of horror movie villains in a scary castle would be kind of badass. In much the same way as how the right likes to hyperbolically claim that the left is run by an interdimensional reptile death cult - that would be equally badass. The sad reality is the powers that run the world are far more mundane than that, and both sides of the aisle are really just a loose affiliation of pathetic men and women in sensible clothes, each selling out to his or her lowest common denominator.

Their depiction of the Democrats is just as scathing. “We hate life and ourselves!”

Except this is the role that the police has always played. The police have always been here to protect the elite and keep the masses in check.

As a child she have limited vision. The job of police is to fight crime, not solve things like unemployment or lack of education, there are other organizations for that. But removing police from the streets will just guarantee the other efforts will be nullified.

She hit the nail on the head too. Lisa is completely right. Tackling the roots of social problems. Reducing poverty with welfare. Legalizing drugs. Closing private punitive prisons in favor of public rehabilitation. Increasing school finds. Taxing the rich. Opening borders to immigrants. Expanding green energy. Abandoning cars in favor of trains.
