From the transition of some of the levels, it looks as if it took The Simpsons a good 2 days at the most of trying to get Maggie back. Imagine how exhausted they were after everything they went through. Nothing more satisfying than seeing them walking back into the city as a family and Homer tossing the diamond away.
@37BIGJIM2 жыл бұрын
Exhausted for sure! The closest they got to rest was right after STAGE 5, and even then they had to fight and take damage all the same.

Given when the game was made, it's very possible in addition to all the "blue shirt" merchandise, that they opted to use blue for bart's shirt due to palette limitations. Lisa and Marge both wear a single color, and Homer's shirt is white, which is already available thanks to his eyes. Notice how bart's shirt is also shaded, meaning they would need at least a couple extra shades of red added to his palette, which knowing how games were made back then, would be a pain in the ass for Konami.

Or it’s just that early merch had Bart in blue?

Konami’s The Simpsons played like 1989’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade game, with up to 4 players joining in on a scrolling action story. At the start of the game, the Simpson family stumbled across a robbery-in-progress by none other than Waylon Smithers, personal assistant to nuclear power plant-owning gazillionaire Mr. Burns. Smithers had been stealing a precious diamond, but after bumping into the family, he accidentally let the jewel slip into baby Maggie’s mouth. Rather than waste time removing it, Smithers simply abducted the littlest Simpson and hightailed it, leaving the rest of the family to mount a rescue operation. With that set-up, the action began. Each of the 4 playable Simpsons had a unique weapon-Marge’s vacuum cleaner, Bart’s skateboard, Lisa’s jump rope and Homer’s beefy fists-and they weren’t shy about using them. Moving through Springfield landmarks like Downtown, Krustyland, Moe’s Tavern, Springfield Butte and the Channel 6 Building, the family battled clowns, zombies, winos, samurai and more en route to a showdown with Mr. Burns himself. At the end of each stage, bosses waited-everyone from a nuclear-fueled boxer to a lethal Krusty the Clown balloon. The Simpsons sported a few unique features, including a team-up attack to encourage multiple players, but the real draw was the game’s authenticity. Little gags and comic animation stayed true to the spirit of the series, regulars like Milhouse and Barney made cameos, the animation captured creator Matt Groening’s style, and the show’s actual voice actors were hired to do work on the game’s soundtrack. Together, these elements made players feel like they were participating in an actual episode, and that feeling translated into a major arcade hit for Konami.

True, it was still relatively high in demand and a bit more expensive than some of the cheap boards we picked up at the time, but it was definitely not prohibitively expensive. Certainly a steal compared to how much they cost nowadays. There are so many console and arcade games I wish I had picked up in the late 90's and early 2000's when they were still relatively cheap...

I was a tough choice at the time for an arcade player for me at the time. I used to debate which arcade game I wanted to play. The Simpsons or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time!! Both are brawlers, debuted in 1991, and by Konami! Tough choices for its time! But quarters well spent! Then came X-Men by Konami a year later. That was an excellent brawler!

I loved playing this in the arcade! The following are observations I've made from playing thru the DREAMLAND level: 1. It is unnecessary to destroy the Marge heads/clouds in order to proceed. 2. The musical notes from the saxophones can't hit players who are in the air. 3. The "SANTA FE" sign and guy who float by (just after the saxophones) are from the Season 1 episode, "Bart the Genius". 4. The bowling ball, in its first form rolling on the ground, can't hit players who are in the air. 5. In its second form, with arms and bouncing around, the bowling ball can't hit players who are in the air.

How were arcade games so advanced (for the time)? I mean, this was released the same year as SNES, yet it was so far ahead of that console it's ridiculous. You'd think they could've figured out a way to make games of this quality for home consoles.
@lookitsapanther8 жыл бұрын
Well, for starters, they were like 15 times bigger than the SNES, and held a lot more hardware inside.
@John6-408 жыл бұрын
Ok. You do realize that 90% of an arcade machine is the monitor, lighting, controls and the coin mechanisms, right? The actual hardware and chips inside make up a minuscule percentage of the whole machine.
@lookitsapanther8 жыл бұрын
Don't quote me on it then. However i'd still be willing to bet that there's more electronic hardware in your average arcade machine than there would be in a SNES, even after taking all the other components into consideration.

Maybe so, and it is all devoted to one game, rather than playing multiple cartridges.

AWESOME video, thank you so much for uploading it, great to have a full look at the real game instead of emulation. Do you still have the raw capture of this? I'd like to see a 60 FPS version since it looks like your capture device treated it as "even and odd" fields instead (I.E. 480i vs. 240p), but VirtualDub has deinterlacing features that could process it. KZfaq doesn't support 60 FPS so I'm not sure where you could share it, though...

I can see that this is a different version of the game, since the credits are global. They are shared for all players. In the version that I downloaded for MAME, you need 4 slots, so that each player can enter their coin individually.
