Apu is a first-generation Indian American immigrant. He has an accent like an Indian immigrant would. He runs a convenience store, like many Indian immigrants do. I think the problem is that many Indian people got called names like "Apu", "squishy boy"... when they were growing up. The thing is, the people who used those names didn't have many other cultural references to use to make fun of them. If Apu had never been created they would have probably have gotten call Haji (from Jonny Quest). Or if the Big Bang Theory had been around back then they would have gotten called Raj. My point is the people who wanted to make fun of them didn't need Apu to do it.

I've always found it racist because It's basically making Indians a laughing stock in society through stereotyping. It's given racists more of a reason to make fun of Indian people and alienating them.
