On the oil fields of North Dakota, Doug Carlile went into business with James Henrikson. However, little did he know that a previous employee of James', KC Clarke, had gone missing, and James Henrikson would do anything to get his way.

The key to Mike's success= Where 48 hrs and Dateline draw the story out for an hour stretch while minimizing interrogation and court room drama, Mike speeds it all up- no BS and he gives us all the tasty interrogation and court room content all inside of 30 minutes. He's a master editor, too.

Same here. I'm an animal behaviorist, and that's why I adopted my first pit bull (complete sweeties, but the stereotype remains). Now I specialize in bully breeds, and I've always got some big, professional working bully with me if I'm out alone. I didn't want to go the firearm route, because even though I have them I don't think I'd be willing to hurt anyone. Intimidating, well-trained dogs are a perfect deterrent.

Yeah I saw that and was like, huh?! My fiancee saw how big it was and said him going through the window to escape never even occurred to him (meaning my fiancee) as an option, he guessed that the idiot was going to try from the roof and had pre prepped the rope and got caught or something... I was just staring at the Itty bitty little rectangle they generously call a window and thought about his picture and the size of the guy and I was just baffled. Maybe going stir crazy affects your spacial awareness and judgment of dimensions of things? Maybe he was going to starve himself skinny first but decided that the escape just had to happen right away?

I’m from just north of the border in Canada, our oilfield was also booming around the same time, many of the companies ran in both the US and Canada. We also experienced somewhat of an increase in drug and crime around this time, but I can truly say that it wasn’t near what it was in some of the US towns/cities, this case being an example. It’s sad to acknowledge that something which was so good for the area economically at the time has caused the lasting damage that it has. After the crash, there’s whole floors of apartment buildings empty, that’s how much of an impact the oil industry had, there’s still high unemployment, drug use and crime happening as a result of this time period.

This has always been a fascinating case for me. When this story first broke I was working in ND, had met Doug, i knew one of the arresting officers of James, and had another friend who worked at the pen where James was held. People that knew him definitely knew he was off. Very short temper and the whole town knew he was roided up. The story didn’t stop where mike said it did though. In 2018, another company James was an investor in had serious legal trouble and others were charged in connection to the embezzlement.

My dad always said he had a SERIOUSLY short temper. He had seen James fly off the handle a number of times and I remember he went to do laundry at a local laundromat and found a flyer hanging accusing James and Sarah "the ken and Barbie of the oil field" of being involved in some sketchy stuff. He called my mom that night to ask her if he should quit his job. I never knew my dad to fear another person.

I think a lot of them have compartmentalized any feelings they have about the crimes they committed. They put it in a box, rationalize it, and forget about it. Then when they’re confessing they have to say it out loud for probably the first time. It’s likely the first real bit of self reflection and examining those feelings and coming to grips with what they’ve done. So not surprising that it’s emotional for them. Of course some people are just psychos and they fake cry to appear normal.

its usually a sign of their lack of intelligence. To think people are actually going to believe you. especially when you're crying and explain how "solid" the pipe to the back of the head was. Also shows just how much of a coward he is, to hope crying will help you get a lesser sentence for "remorse"
