Chef Sean Sherman, who belongs to the Oglala Lakota tribe, spent a couple of decades cooking in fancy kitchens around Minneapolis before deciding to apply what he knew to native foods. He is on a mission to celebrate and showcase native cuisine with "The Sioux Chef's Indigenous Kitchen," which won this year's James Beard Award for Best American Cookbook. Martha Teichner reports.

I am Dakota Sioux/Chippewa. I am proud of my heritage and my ancestors. Unfortunately, in the town I work in, we experience racism, even though the town i work in is literally 15 minutes away from the reservation(where i reside). I've had to deal it with since I had my first job at a grocery store. North Dakota needs to know, we are here and we are living. Put up with us or not, we will continue to be here. Hokah hey

Being vegan due to health issues and having a love for food I am amazed that majority of native cuisines are plant based. His recipes are so healthy and beautiful representing history and culture.

I've been wanting native American food for years. I'd search and mostly find more reservation type food. Which is its own thing but always was curious about pre colonial native food.

Listened to Sherman on NPR. It was enlightening to say the least. Very emotional for me. My mother is Yaqui from Sonora. From a small Village named Vicam. I was raised on her traditional foods. My children's mother is Navajo. It was very inspiring. Tragic in that so much of our traditional seeds and crops were los to European settlers who burned their crops as means of removing them from their land.

Ironically the sioux chef actually inspired me to cook I'm only an 8th ojibwe but I love cooking with precontact foods. The best part about using native ingredients is that alot of the foods are good for people with diabetes Ironically many native Americans have diabetes. From cooking indigenous I get excited about fruits, veggies and meats So far my favorite native foods are bison, wild rice and squash

Yeah, finally at long lawt we get their food. The only thing I found was blue corn based recipes on Hopi land, next to Navajo Nation. This is a formidable tribal Tribute,

The beginning of this project starts with indigenous people getting their land back to be able to grow their own food. I mean their are about 5 different American ranchers raising bison, but no indigenous peoples raising bison. WTH is that?
