Hey everyone, join me for an amazing display in acting from Haley Joel Osment in The Sixth Sense!! Also starring Bruce Willis and Toni Collette, directed by M. Night Shyamalan (the master of twists). It's a thriller/suspense/horror with so much emotion packed into it, and I think it's one of the most amazing movies ever.

If I remember right, Bruce Willis won an award for the movie, but once he was on stage, he was very regretful in accepting it, because of Haley Joel Osment's performance, and felt that he deserved the award instead of himself, and said so to the crowd.

The movie IS basically "babies first plot twist". Bruce getting shot is the "Chekhov's gun" of the movie. It's way too overt and out the gate to not have meaning later on especially since the whole damned movie is about a kid who sees dead people.

I think the scene in the car where Cole tells his mom about seeing dead people has a few very specific elements in it: 1. When he first tells him mom that he sees ghosts, her first reaction (just like Bruce Willis's, ironically) is to think he's experiencing serious mental problems. 2. When he tells her about her mother seeing her dance, that's not something that would convince her of anything. The grandmother could easily have told Cole that story while she was still alive. 3. But then he hits you with an answer to a question the mom asked the grandmother AT HER GRAVE, and there's no possible way Cole could have known that unless he's telling the truth. The Sixth Sense is a fantastic movie. I was lucky enough to have seen it in theaters when it first came out, and you can't possibly imagine how big a shock that final twist was at the time. And for a "scary" movie to have so much emotion in it is just icing on the cake.

Cole talking in the beginning about how he's going to see Malcolm again, then at the end how he's not going to see him again. We're supposed to think that's 'see' in the sense of seeing a psychiatrist, but in retrospect it's 'seeing' a ghost. Malcolm's unfinished business and devotion to helping kids drew him to haunt the Vincent-like Cole, and Cole's gift allowed him to see that there was something different about this one. Like the others, he still didn't know he was dead, but he wanted to help and talk, instead of hurting Cole. Once he warmed to the idea of having an adult, a psychiatrist, even a dead one, wanting to help, Cole wanted that help, to the point of pinning his hopes on Malcolm and crying when Malcolm talked about leaving. Even though Cole knew what he was the whole time. This attitude toward Malcolm prepared him for Malcolm's outlandish suggestion regarding the other ghosts. And that changed his life. Returning the favor, Cole worked within Malcolm's delusion that he was still alive and gave him the way to talk across the void to his wife, who didn't have the 6th sense and couldn't hear him like Cole could. And that healed Malcolm, allowing him in the end to finally move on, both items of his unfinished business completed: Helping Cole, and telling his wife she was never second.

According to Night, Red signifies "anything in the real world that has been tainted by the other world" and "to connote really explosively emotional moments and situations"; the carpet at the birthday party; the red balloon, which locates a ghost, but pops when Cole is hurt; Malcom's doorknob; the volume numbers on his tape recorder; sleeping Anna's shawl. For some of the time it's used, I see it as a symbol of sanctuary or as an attempt to confound the dead; the door to the church; Cole's sweater/tent, etc.

Another clue about Malcolm is that he never changed clothes. He is always in the same outfit. When he is in the sweatshirt, it is the sweatshirt that he puts on at the very beginning of the movie. He never takes his trench coat off because it was covering up his bloodstained shirt. Also, when he wants to be somewhere, he is just there. The basement door was blocked off but he wanted to be in the basement, so he was just there. He needed to find Cole to talk to him about the recording, so he just shows up, in all of Philadelphia, at the exact location that Cole was at.

Great reaction to one of the most emotionally devastating performances I've seen. I saw this soon after it came out and even now I still have tears on my face during this movie. All three of the leads deserved Academy Awards for their performances in my opinion. Toni Collette was pinpoint perfection as Cole's mom, and Haley Joel Osment was so good I don't even know how to describe it. For such a young actor to give such a completely haunted performance as Cole was astounding. And Bruce was as stellar as he could be, showing he's much more than an action hero or a romcom star. FYI he plays an incredibly good villain too, both in an episode from the first season of the Miami Vice TV show in the 80s and in The Jackal from 1997. Both worth a watch if you can find them. The Moonlighting TV show (1985-1989) was where a lot of us first saw him as a lead actor, which was a romcom that was great for the first three or so seasons and started to slip after that. He also played a serious role in 12 Monkeys and a serious secondary role in The Siege. A fun action hero role is The Fifth Element, a serious yet comedic role is Whole Nine Yards, and a great seriousish Disney movie he did is The Kid. All of which are worth a watch. For me, the unsung unrecognized hero of the movie is the schoolteacher. In spite of the fact that Cole outed him as a former stutterer and tormented him with it until he stutteringly called Cole a freak, I believe that the teacher, who was likely tormented and bullied as a stutterer when in school, understood Cole's situation and tried to make him feel more included and less of an outsider. Remember, Cole tells us that the teacher gave Cole the role of Arthur, the hero of Sword in the Stone, and cast Tommy Thomasino as the village idiot (well deserved in my opinion), giving Cole the chance for the glory and a good experience with the other students carrying him around until they collapsed all laughing happily together. The teacher could have been a world class jerk, but instead he did all he could to try to help and elevate Cole. That's awesome behavior in my book. My favorite movie of Haley Joel Osment's is Secondhand Lions. So many good actors and so many good performances in that one.

I first saw Bruce Willis in Moonlighting with Cybil Shepperd. (who was in Taxi Driver and The Last Picture Show) Moonlighting was very good late 80's TV show. I cannot watch a reaction of this without a box of Kleenex. 75% of this movie is flat out heartbreaking because of the performances of the cast. Especially if it hits the reactor in the heartstrings as well. And you figured it out right before the reveal. But that's ok. Your reactions are some of my favorites. Strange how 12 angry Men and the 6th Sense, 2 of the greatest movies I've ever seen were tied. Good fortune.

We all wish we could go back and watch this movie again for the first time. But we do enjoy watching others see it for their first time. My wife and I went to the theater to see this when it came out. There was an audible full audience gasp when the plot twist dropped. One of the best twist ever. Great reaction Vera, as usual. Good job.

I envy you. Watching this masterpiece (and I don’t use that word lightly) for the first time is one of those moments you will not soon forget. I watched this move on opening night and I still get chills watching it today. You are the first reactor to have caught the big twist as early as you did. I realized Malcolm was a ghost at the exact same time you did. When Cole suggested how he could “fix” the marriage, it hit me like a ton of bricks!

I believe that Walberg's character had the same ability as cole. He could see dead people, but he didn't have Bruce at an early age to help him deal with it and inderstand. Eventually it was to late and he had gone crazy by then. And finally snapped, and that's why he shot Bruce. Cole started having the same ability so bruce, After his death and without his knowledge, went to help cole and then he be at peace and could move on to the other world. I tell you this one movie is 1 of the few that really caught me off guard at the end.I did not see it that Bruce's character was dead until they showed it. Haley was up for the best actor Oscar and I think should have won and he didn't.He would have been the youngest actor to ever win.An oscar had he won.

I remember seeing this movie in theaters, and the collective gasps when the ending was reveal. There hadn't been a big horror movie reveal like that in so long , and people didn't see it coming. This is still one of my favorite movies and my heart still breaks every time we get to the car scene. There are so many things that we pick up on after rewatch(es). Like the fact that the wife wasn't able to let go because she felt his presence everywhere. She was in deep depression, So the fact that he is moving on means she will be able to move on, too. Same with the grandmother. You finally realize that the grandmother was unable to move on until she let her daughter know about the dance recital. But Cole wasn't able to tell his mom his secret, so his grandmother couldn't move on. You are one of the only reactors who picked up on the little sister getting sick as well.

The youngest actor ever to win an Academy Award was Tatum O’Neal for Paper Moon (1973), which she co-starred with her father, Ryan. She was 10. She is followed by Kiwi actress, Anna Paquin, at age 11, for her role in The Piano (1993). Haley Joel Osment’s performance was superb - definitely Oscar material but sometimes it’s just the luck of the draw but he is one of the youngest actors to receive an Oscar nomination. His performance in The Sixth Sense led him to be cast and work with Steven Spielberg on A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001). He can be seen in season 1 of The Boys, playing a former child actor.

Great reaction like always. The attention to detail in this movie is amazing and makes it a fun rewatch. Every time there's a ghost and a human nearby there's something red. A red balloon leads Cole up the stairs at the birthday party. Cole's safety tent is made of red blankets. The horrible mother at the funeral is wearing red. The inexplicable changes of temperature from normal to so cold that you can see the characters’ breath can be explained by the fact that it only gets cold when a ghost is upset. So well done. There are others fun-facts about it, Walt Disney Studios' then-president David Vogel didn’t bother to consult with his superiors before paying $2.25 million for the rights to The Sixth Sense, and agreed to let Shyamalan direct the already-expensive film. Vogel’s boss was livid when he found out about the deal, and demanded that Vogel relinquish some of his power. When Vogel refused, he was canned. Actor Donnie Wahlberg lost 43 pounds for his role of Vincent Grey, changing his appearance so much that director M. Night Shyamalan did not even recognize him on the first day of filming. The inexplicable changes of temperature from normal to so cold that you can see the characters’ breath can be explained by the fact that it only gets cold when a ghost is upset. Shyamalan regretted casting himself as dr. Hill, He did it as a “nice little thing” to acknowledge his parents, who are both doctors. Unfortunately, the actor Manoj Nelliyattu Shyamalan wasn’t good enough for his director: He thought his acting was so bad that he cut most of his scene. Cole speaks a Latin phrase in church upon meeting Malcolm: “De profundis clamo ad te domine.” These are actually the first few words of Psalm 130 in The Bible. Translated into English, thy mean, “Out of the depths, I cry to you, O Lord.” This movie story it’s similar to an episode of are you “Afraid of the dark” the 1994 episode “The Tale of the Dream Girl” shares a similar storyline to this movie, where a teenager named Johnny doesn’t realize that he’s dead until the very end of the episode, even though the only living person that talks to him is his sister Erica. (The audience doesn't realize it either.) This movie was one of only five horror movies to be nominated for a Best Picture Oscar. The others were Jaws, The Exorcist, The Silence of the Lambs, and Black Swan. It was also the only one of these movies that did not win any Academy Awards. Keep up the good work.

We don’t intuit the plot twist in this movie because we not only think that Malcolm has protagonist armor, we subliminally believe that Bruce Willis has superstar armor. You don’t even question that he survived the gunshot. On the DVD, there’s an extra which divulges the clues sprinkled throughout the film. P.S. Don't tell anyone, but I cried right alongside you.
