A case I investigated recently found me in a corner of south Somerset. The story of Theophilus Broome, or more specifically his skull, is one I’ve heard mentioned a number of times over the years. This is because I grew up a short distance from where the events which surround this story began to unfold almost 350 years ago.
I appreciate all the support I get from my subscribers through sharing, comments and likes. If you’d like to further support me, you can through PayPal:

Our damp, cold little island is so rich with tales of hauntings and unsolved mysteries. We've got a real culture for the gruesome and supernatural here in Britain, every town in the UK has it's own ghost stories and historical cases. Some are just local legend but others are definitely real, some are in that grey area between because of a lack of written recordings of the time period. There are some areas of forest in the UK known as the "screaming woods" because sometimes you can hear ghostly screams coming from somewhere in the trees. Urban ghost stories are fascinating because it's a blend of old england and modern cities being built on top of them, in particular stories such as ghosts in the tube stations and hauntings around the cemetery in London that is in the middle of a roundabout. I remember reading a long time ago about a funeral train that used a secret line of the tube and abandoned platforms to carry corpses back and forth between hospitals and disposal sites during times of disease and war, it's been closed for a long time but a few brave urban explorers still occasionally get inside and have a look around. It's weird riding around on the tube and thinking you could be mere metres away from disused, haunted railways and tunnels. Very interesting stuff. Apparently lots of cities all over the UK and Europe have systems of catacombs beneath them that haven't been used for at least a hundred years but still exist, I know Edinburgh is very popular with the explorers and at one time a hidden room full of skeletons was found in the catacombs near the river Thames. Things like that were used by smugglers and criminals so I bet there's lots of treasures/atrocities hidden deep under the cities, and normal people are just walking around doing their 9-5 business none the wiser a few feet above.

I've just read a series of books about legends and true crime in my home county of Somerset. I'll be covering at least two of them in the coming months. You're absolutely right, there is a wealth of grim history here (and in other countries).

That story reminds me of the most fascinating books I read as a child growing up in the northwest corner of Washington, USA. Our small, isolated town hidden away in the middle of a huge forest did have a library, and books about the spooky tales, ghosts and poltergeists of England were my very favorite. This video brought some hidden, 50 year-old memories back to the surface. Great work!

Yes, it does seem odd that someone would want to subject their family to living with a piece of their dead body, although there's a worse, and really rather sad story. You might want to look up the story surrounding Chambercombe Manor, North Devon, England - where a son paid for the sins of his father, bigtime. Some years ago, I visited this manor farm whilst on holiday in Devon, without knowing the background story in advance. What a shock I got, not just from the story, but also for a piece of the evidence that still exists in the house. I didn't 'feel' any 'presences' or experience any unexplained phenomena or anything ephemeral like that. (I'm not a believer in that kind of thing, quite happy to find rational explanations first and foremost). However, in this case, 'fate' - well, I'll say no more. You read about it if you don't know the story.

My house was built in 1417.When we purchased it,we needed a larger shed than the present one .We had to put a foundation down ,and dug up the dirt floor * ,next door is a church ,we are the old 'church house ',and have existed as ,a school , small monastery (that produced bibles and candles),amongst other iterations. The area was home to Henry VII's hunting lodge, and family home of the Seymore estate .So plenty of history here. As we dug the dirt floor .2 unusually giant wolf hound dogs buried top to tail in together ,other odd items had been placed in with them.Strange that they should both die on the same day, seemingly disease and injury free.Tge foot of my garden contains village stocks and cells .The cells is a tiny wooden lock up.. it's an odd 2 seater (looks like an Tudor toilet ) theres a wooden barred slat the size of a smaller shoe box .Its usually kept locked, I walked past when repairs were being carried out ,I knew the workmen ,so i asked if i could sit in it ...So dark and so tight a space .I think had you been placed here to be taken for your punishment .You probably weren't going to make it back home ,or even live. Very eerie. ..I always assumed wed dig something up we do a lot to our garden and I think this is around where youd be buried if you were an unwed mother or a criminal etc, just outside the boundary of the cemetery wall ......Theres still hand made nails in the original beams from the monks using tallow to write bibles with the light...I've never seen a ghost though....yet.

Nice to see a video of my home village and it’s creepy history. Also the farmer tried to move the skull then later almost drove into an open well in the ground. He marked it out and checked the deeds of the land of which there was no well there, when they moved it back the well had gone and there was just a marking on a patch of grass. Quite nice around autumn can see the bats swarming the graveyard Yew tree.
