The stainless-steel market is growing in popularity, and for good reason. With unique properties such as pliability, aesthetics, strength and corrosion resistance, it’s no surprise that the US stainless steel market is expected to grow at an annual rate of over 6% from 2023 to 2030. If you aren’t yet familiar with fabricating stainless steel, it would be wise to start learning.
During the welding process, the unique properties of stainless steel become compromised. Abrasion or excessive heat destroys the passive chromium oxide layer on the surface, exposing the metal to corrosion. In order to restore these properties, heat tint must be removed from the heat-effected zone, the surface cleaned, and passivation restored. Passivation is the formation (or restoration) of this protective layer.
Electrochemical weld cleaning is a highly effective method for cleaning and passivating stainless steel welds. Walter Surface Technologies specializes in electrochemical weld cleaning systems.
This video takes a deep dive into the Walter Surfox 305, the industry’s safest and fastest MIG & TIG weld cleaning system, a unit capable of cleaning both stainless steel & aluminum.
