My 9 year old is really interested in modeling and 3D printing. I have a couple of larger printers I use, but am regularly tying up. It would be really cool to have something small that she could call her own. Would you recommend this for her given I can help overcome the issues you described in the video or is there another budget 3D printer that may better suite this use case? Thanks, Angus!

I actually realized that I print many small things. Spacers, little connector, hooks, vacuum connection rings. Usually only a few centimeters high, and smaller than 10 by 10cm. So something that prints petg 15*15*10cm with the reliability and ease of use like my Prusa I would like it.

The H bot design is really cool. Small printers are actually good for beginners - they tend to be more forgiving and their small size makes them less intimidating. And less room is needed for them. Fabrikator Mini is also another good one.

The Pi Zero is not that bad. I had it a while on my Prusa MK3, piggyback on the EINSY board. It works well, especially if you take care of 3 things: 1) Try to connect it with the GPIO pins and if needed, use a PiCam. Connect through USB with a USB cam uses too much resources on the single USB bus in (every!) Raspberry Pi. 2) It works better for functional prints, where the single gcode commands are longer than on rounded, flowing shapes. A square is 4 gcode commands, a circle is dozens of commands. Every commands takes time; the less gcode lines per second, the better. 3) Do not use the OctoPi during a print. Uploading the next gcode or getting live updates on the terminal or gcode viewer uses too much resources. Upload gcode, start a print, and wait until it's done. Works fine...

This is great. I would like to take it a step further and DIY the touchscreen of the printer using an old Android phone to further decrease the cost. It could communicate with the printer board over WiFi or Bluetooth, so no USB shenanigans are required. I guess the market for a display-less 3D printer basically doesn't exist though.

just put a small washer under the idler wheels on the X-Y gantry. It has to be small enough to only touch the inner part of the bearing, and thick enough so the spinning part of the idler is not pushed against the plastic and binds up the movement. Crazy that they did not see that problem in planning/prototyping the machine, they could have just done a tiny adjustment to the injection molds to fix it.

Its a resin printer, so it’s detail is astounding, but it’s ready to print straight out of the box. Seriously, plug it in & you’re ready to print! Obviously you’ve got to download their slicer profile from the SD card, but it’ll download Chitubox for you & slices w/ that. If you want to order it, Amazon is a good option.
