Hand In Glove was the bands first single released in May 1983. It peaked at No.3 in the UK Indie Chart. A remixed version of the track appeared on The Smiths debut album in 1984.
Lyrics
Hand in glove
The sun shines out of our behinds
No, it's not like any other love
This one is different-because it's us
Hand in glove
We can go wherever we please
And everything depends upon
How near you stand to me
And if the people stare
Then the people stare
I really don't know and I really don't care
Hand in glove
The good people laugh
Yes, we may be hidden by rags
But we have something they'll never have
So, hand in glove I stake my claim
I'll fight to the last breath
If they dare touch a hair on your head
I'll fight to the last breath
The good life is out there, somewhere
So stay on my arm, you little charmer
But I know my luck too well
And I'll probably never see you again.

More of a bass spiral and helter skelter. Terrific playing. Mike Joyce commented on this, saying Andy's playing was in a world of its own.

19 May 2023 Just 5 days ago it was the 40th anniversary of The Smiths first single release, the wonderful Hand In Glove, and now just days later we lose Andy Rourke. Amazing to think that Andy was only 19 when that first single came out. Very shocked by this terrible news. RIP Andy Rourke. Seeing The Smiths twice in 1984 and 1985 at the DeMontfort Hall here in Leicester are still two of my most favourite concert memories ever. Through his music Andy will be with us forever.

This song used to mean so much to me, It was encapsulated in time and space, It was about a consuming love and I experienced it, It brought such emotions rushing in at once, Now that is all gone and life has changed, Those that are depressed, know that life changes, the things that are crushing you today will dissipate with time. After all wasn't it Morrissey who said "time proves everything?"

Estaba deprimida: me sentía sola y desgraciada, era pesimista y malhumorada, creía que "life its a pigsty" y que yo era "unlovable".

I think i understand. Morrissey's and The Smiths' songs were with me during my adolescence and some of my youth; as many i felt identified, accompanied and even consoled with their lyrics, which talked with a brutal honesty that touched my shoulder and my heart. I was depressed: i felt alone and unhappy, i was pessimistic and moody, i believed that "life its a pigsty" and that i was "unlovable". Time goes by; you meet people, places, hobbies. Life gets better, but you have to work for that to happen. You have to want a better life and surround yourself with positive people, things and situations. Morrissey and The Smiths will ALWAYS be my dearest artists and everytime i listen to their songs they move me. I even got a tatto of M on my ring finger, as a symbol of commitment (I know, I know...), but the time in which i interpreted their songs as a reflection of my life and emotions passed, and that's how it should be :) In the same way that the latest Morrissey albums are not so self deprecating and pessimistic :))

Takes me back to the summer of 2019 when I first started falling in love with The Smiths I used to play and There is a light that never goes out continuosly on repeat i discovered The Smiths at a time when I thought life couldn't get any better and I had this wonderful feeling which a lot of people have when they listen to The Smiths. It felt like they were singing about my life and telling me that there is hope and the stars will shine again and it did ultimately get better Morrissey's poetic and heartbreakingly beautiful words and voice Johnny's magical guitar and Mike and Andy's wonderful rhythm section kinda changed and saved my life I'll always love the Smiths 🤟

This was the first song by The Smiths, based on Morrissey and Johnnys friendship. This was also the last song they performed live. The last lyric Morrissey sang live was "I'll probably never see you again." The song that was about their friendship now sounds like it's about their friendship dying.

Because he sounds like he sings, "Natasha" in the instrumentals, I like to imagine that this song is about a night we met on a Mancunian night out.
