The four best people together -EVER!!!

I heard this session the night it was first broadcast. After “Heaven Knows…” I did wonder if The Smiths were already slipping into self-parody, but this bowled me over. When it came out on the b-side of “William…” a few weeks later I was thrilled. I left home about a month after this and it felt like a going-away present.

Holy moly what a record. These tunes played often at the clubs my friends & I frequented all over texas, during the mid eighties. Mostly in San Antonio/ Austin. This particular smiths record is massive. One of those iconic pieces of music that epitomizes an era… At the time, at least in the us, this type of music was only played in underground dance clubs, 1985!or thereabouts. It’s unbelievable to remember how long ago that was…

Iconic song that defines The Smiths even though most of their music 🎵 isn't like this lol how ironic. Definitely the sound of The Smiths can never be defined it's just pure genius level music 🎶

Weren’t the John Peel sessions recorded live in the studio ?
@anncoates41043 жыл бұрын
Yes, however in this case most of the song was sampled from the official recording (only the bass and some minor guitar parts were re-recorded) as it had only just been finished and yet to be released. It was effectively a remix more than anything.

I don't think they were, as the Peel sessions for Miserable Lie and Still Ill feature harmonica, which could have only been overdubbed in a studio production as it requires hands, something which Marr would also need to use to play guitar which can be heard at the same time as the harmonica. This is also why live versions of Hand In Glove don't have a harmonica.

@@generalbacon6955 The BBC Maida Vale Studios had a multi-track desk, so overdubs were very much a thing.

@@generalbacon6955 actually marr frequently used a neck holder for the harmonica and played it while simultaneously playing guitar
