Having been a Smiths and Morrissey fan for 30 years now, I've known a lot of fans of theirs who had things like depression or bipolar disorder, but were lifted out of those feelings at least in part by these songs. It's like hearing a song for the first time and saying, "Yes! That guy knows exactly how I feel!". Also, since the early days of the Smiths, fans have been throwing flowers onstage during the concerts, and Morrissey dances with the flowers in hand. Morrissey fans also have a tendency to climb up on stage to get a chance to hug him, and he allows them to. Morrissey is also a longtime vegan and animal rights activist. The music of Smiths and Morrissey appeals to the outsiders, the ignored, the lonely, the depressed, the LGBT community, the celibate, the awkward, and the black sheep. The fact that people have been climbing up on stage to hug him for 35 years speaks to the fact that the songs are written for those who are deprived of love and acceptance. And to paraphrase a Smiths song, "Ask me, I won't say no, how could I?".

Exactly. I never really got music before I got into the smiths, it feels like someone made tailored music for me if you know what I mean. It’s so so perfect that it makes me feel connected to it. I’m only a teenager but I can tell that Morrissey and the Smiths will forever be my favourite band because there is nothing quite like them

I don't think that's what it's about. I think it is literally just about a confused (and out of place) boy who punctures his bike on hill who is greeted by a guy who pulls up in a car and offers him a ride. The guy then asks him to go out dancing/drinking that night but the boy is either too poor or too insecure to go. However 'why pamper life's complexities', he wants to be adventurous. The bit about the ring though I have no idea.

@David Clinging Well no-one knows for sure. I was referring to Morrissey's quote about not having enough money or clothes to go out. Which is really what the song is about, not sexuality like other people say. For the hillside bit, that is your interpretation, I never have that image appear in my mind when hearing this song but if you do then good for you.

@David Clinging I see that line more about Morrissey (or whoever the protagonist is) allowing himself to hitch a ride from this stranger. Why question if nature will make a man of him yet so he can fend for himself when it's clear he doesn't have to do everything alone. I think the line literally means why ponder about life and desolation when I could just get it in this car and have live. The leather runs smooth - a well kept upper class car - extremely welcoming to a boy in poverty so why not get in?

I've known about The Smiths for many years but didn't care to listen to them until this one time I was driving and listening to the radio. A caller requested This Charming Man, I raised the volume to see what all the hype was about this band. I was instantly hooked as soon as I heard that song.

The Dream Academy's "Remembrance Days" is one of my top 20 albums.

Dream Academy's version is actually a really beautiful reinvention of The Smith's song, I really prefer Dream Academy's version by far ... The Smith's original is great too and they wrote the song , so, credits to them of course ...
