This is one of those songs that would routinely give me goose bumps. And, omg, it's the "color of _lead_ " as in the elemental metal. "A Taste of Honey" was indeed Shelagh Delaney's debut play, and was adapted for the silver screen a few years later. That is Delaney on the cover of the "Louder than Bombs" LP.

Big Smith's fan here, from all the way back in the 80's. Important to know about the Smith's are the times in which Morrissey was writing his songs. In this song Moz, as he is known, sings about the situations that many young girls, in this case, who came from working class backgrounds. There was a depression that was part of all those peoples lives, which was normal. One of my favorite youtubes is Morrissey Live at the Hollywood Bowl.

I was happy and intrigued that I stumbled across your reaction to this song being a young black American woman who had probably never heard of Manchester band The Smiths, my favourite band of all time, being a 45 year old Manchester man who sings and plays guitar and produces music,I remember being about 12yrs old and hearing this song for the first time and this song gripped me and made start to learn how to play the guitar, The Smiths wrote about real life whether it be happy, sad, melancholic or humorous, to me this is the difference between The Smiths and many other bands or artists the fact of writing real songs about real life and not just ‘Baby baby I love you so much’ like the majority of musicians out there, the lyrics written boy Morrissey told real stories and the music written by Johnny Marr complimented each other perfectly entwining melody and guitar riffs beautifully. I was nice to see somebodies reaction who had never heard it before and over 30yrs after the song was written, maybe you don’t like it and it’s not for you which is perfectly fine but I hope you can appreciate this song and why they wrote this way because life isn’t all lovely, beautiful, starry, glitzy and full of rainbows but can be tough, hard, a struggle and have many ups & downs, but also can be full of happy & good times which is a more true and reflective take on life in general in my opinion. Well done India for actually giving the song a go and reacting to it as it could have been so easy for you to have just skipped on and gone to another track to react to. I love The Smiths. Been my favorite band for most of my adult life. Morrissey's lyrics coupled with Johnny Marr's music are just incredible. They're an acquired taste for some. You kind of have to give them a good chance - listen through songs a few times to appreciate the masterpieces they are. Those are two great albums you were gifted! Be sure to check out Ask, Still Ill, Bigmouth Strikes Again, The Boy With a Thorn in His Side, and though it's on a completely different album (The Queen Is Dead), another Smith's masterpiece called Cemetry Gates as well as the greatest Smith's song ever, and ultimately, one of the most important songs of the English language, There Is A Light That Never Goes Out. It warms my heart to see the next generations (like this young lady) discovering and appreciating The Smiths. Morrissey and Made could have been Lennon/McCartney had they held together for a few more LPs and a dozen odd singles w/B-sides.

If anyone did watch the Tv series "Charmed", The Smiths is the band who originally made the main theme song "How Soon Is Now". :)

Been a fan my whole life almost, I heard my older brother playing this record in 1984 and fell in love with it. I’ve been listening to this ever since since! Tried to figure out what all the songs meant but, that’s the brilliance of morrissey he leaves us to interpret and to find meaning to it that we can relate to in our own lives. You don’t get that much in music do you- WE!

The sailor in A Taste of Honey didn't leave her, he was a sailor & had to go back to his ship. During the movie, we never see him finding out. Oh she has kept the baby when the movie ends.
