This is an alternative version to the one on the album. This is the Troy Tate version. He produced the album initially but Morrissey and Marr weren't happy with the finished product so they got another producer, John Porter, in to produce the album that would be released.

Started listening to The Smiths back in 1986, when I was "Sixteen, clumsy and shy"...Their songs were a relief back then, because I was unable to express myself and I found in Morrissey's lyrics a way to do it and to understand exactly how I felt...

Exactament! And hard to imagine a song like this ever being “allowed” if released today. Certainly, we couldn’t expect lyrics like these to emanate from the lips of Taylor Swift, Katy Perry or Adele. Times change but true poetry is eternal.

I know that the song is about the loss of innocence in the soul of childhood but, beyond the controversy that caused the lyrics of the song at the time, I wonder what things Morrissey feels when he writes such melancholy things, I mean, after all he always says to hate people and be celibate. Anyway. whatever it is I thank him for giving the world such good music

Nearly every song by the Smiths points to Morrissey being gay. Everything he sings about aligns well with what it was like to be a gay man in the 1980s. Of course he would claim to be celibate, because admitting to being homosexual prior to 2013 or so was still a pretty monumental thing.

So that's how you understood the song too? Interesting. Because "take me to the haven of your bed was something that you never said" which could hint to the innocence being lost was something that wasn't sexual. Maybe it was drug related or something else. I'm just speculating, because i don't know the songs' context

In this version, the ending part ("Oh, I do, I do") is superior to the Hatful of Hallow version. This version is also better to listen to if you're *truly* feeling the gloominess of these lyrics. Hatful of Hallows version has a superior instrumental and is better if you're feeling slightly more upbeat, or like there's some room for optimism. Im glad that in both, Morrissey hardly changed his vocal delivery at all, except one is a little more energetic. Unlike These Things Take Time or You've Got Everything Now where they can be very different experiences depending on which version you're listening to.

So here we are :) It's time the tale were told Of how you took a child And you made him old It's time the tale were told Of how you took a child And you made him old You made him old Reel around the fountain Slap me on the patio I'll take it now Oh Fifteen minutes with you Well, I wouldn't say no Oh, people said that you were virtually dead And they were so wrong Fifteen minutes with you Oh, well, I wouldn't say no Oh, people said that you were easily led And they were half-right Oh, they, oh, they were half-right, oh It's time the tale were told Of how you took a child And you made him old It's time that the tale were told Of how you took a child And you made him old You made him old Oh, reel around the fountain Slap me on the patio I'll take it now Ah, oh Fifteen minutes with you Oh, I wouldn't say no Oh, people see no worth in you Oh, but I do. Fifteen minutes with you Oh, I wouldn't say no Oh, people see no worth in you I do Oh, I, oh, I do Oh I dreamt about you last night And I fell out of bed twice You can pin and mount me like a butterfly But take me to the haven of your bed Was something that you never said Two lumps, please You're the bee's knees But so am I Oh, meet me at the fountain Shove me on the patio I'll take it slowly Oh Fifteen minutes with you Oh, I wouldn't say no Oh, people see no worth in you Oh, but I do Fifteen minutes with you Oh, no, I wouldn't say no Oh, people see no worth in you I do Oh, I, I do Oh, I do Oh, I do Oh, I do

It seems like there are three versions of this song? Two different versions on Spotify (the 2011 remaster of this album and another version labeled "John Peel Session"). Both of those sound different from this one. The John Peel version is more upbeat and the 2011 Remaster one is similar to this one but different vocals and slightly faster. This version is a little slower and there are more intentional vocal breaks / cracks.
