That makes sense why The Smiths aren’t your taste if you were an 80’s DJ. Their entire ethos and aesthetic was a counter to that kind of music. They vehemently hated the DJs at the time; so much so that they have lyrics like, “burn down the disco, hang the blessed DJ // because the music they constantly play, says nothing to me about my life”.

In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Morrissey is quoted as saying that this song is about "loss of innocence, that until one has a physical commitment with another person, there's something childlike about the soul." An interesting fact too, the lyric, "I dreamt about you last night, and I fell out of bed twice," is lifted from Shelagh Delaney's 1958 play, A Taste Of Honey, a Morrissey favourite.

You know The Stone Roses? They were a band from the late 80s influenced by The Smiths. So they have the jangle pop of The Smiths, but they add psychedelic rock to it, as well as a smidgen of acid house. They’re also a lot more upbeat and “cool” than The Smiths. So it will probably be more up your street. Fantastic band. If you want to get into them, I’d recommend starting with either “I Wanna Be Adored” or “Fools Gold” (Full Version). Both are their most famous, and would be a good introduction. Some great reactions you have up tho. You’ve earned a subscriber!

@@hanierfamily No problem! I didn’t think you’d know them. Massive in the UK at the time, hardly known across the pond. They only had two albums. But their first is critically acclaimed, and is seen by a lot of people as the greatest British album of all time. It’s that good. Also, they kind of created their own genre, as they’re hard to pin down. It consists of all the styles I said in my original comment. The genre is called “Madchester” (also known as “Baggy”), them being the stand out band from that scene. It’s a really cool genre, and it might be a rabbit hole you’d like to jump down. As I said, a lot more upbeat than The Smiths, so you’d enjoy this more. And I’m glad you’ll check them out soon!

Ha, a DJ from the 80s? Well, The Smiths are from the 80s... but, as you suggested earlier (reacting to 'The Boy With The Thorn In His Side'), sometimes, depending on where you live(d) or what you liked at the time, some artists/bands may not have been inside your scope. I get that. But... since you're a DJ from the 80s, you want to try the song 'Panic' of The Smiths. It might give you a good laugh. They can be very melancholic and sad, but also ironic and even satirical. It's not always easy to guess whether or when Morrissey's lyrics are deeply serious or a joke though. Another up tempo song that's more 'fun' listening to (with definitely satirical lyrics) is 'Bigmouth Strikes Again'.

I (Chris) grew up on the East Coast of Canada. In a secluded group of towns in the middle of New Brunswick. Let's just say country music has power there. And I was already bucking that when I started working at the local teen dance club we had there. I had to keep them happy, while occasionally throwing some interesting songs to make me happy. I felt The Smiths were a little too melancholy for that environment, from what I had heard of them.
@BCTMarcus

@@hanierfamily I hear you. I was introduced to them around 1983/1984 (compilation album 'Hatful Of Hollow'), listening to it with a friend, and we just loved it. But we were already into punk rock, post punk, The Cure, Joy Division, Echo & The Bunnymen lots of gloomy (mostly British) post punk bands, so we were kinda prepared, lol. A well known song was 'Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now'. The title speaks for itself. Funny thing was, that in our local club(s) we danced to songs with great dance rhythms and stuff, but also with deep melancholic lyrics. Somehow it symbolizes the 80s for me. You might want to check out a song like 'Blue Monday' by New Order. It was a smashing dance hit in Europe in 1983, but the lyrics were, as I mentioned before, very melancholic.

I have a taste for bleak songs because it provides a relatable vibe. Because I have chronic depression. Some musicians deliberately record songs that can soothe mental patients. Flaming Lips stated that is one of their intentions. Thanks for this

Yes, the British school system often is the subject of popular musicians in Britain. They must have been (and maybe still are) strict in what they expected of their students. Often to the students detriment, I'm guessing.

We're talking about the song, though. I know you can't hear us but, everything we're saying is about the music, and things we noticed. We often repeat what we were talking about when we stop the song, and at the end. Anyway, things won't really be able to change until we upgrade our audio gear. When we have headphones, we won't be muting. And we'll try to talk less, though we will talk.
