The simple and sweet lyrics with the innocent sounding melody is hiding something dark, there's a story being told here, but he's leaving it to the listener to work it out. It definitely takes many listens to pick it up but the "innocent" and "pious" declarations of the "protagonist in this song are all an act. "See how words as old as sin fit me like a glove"

This song is possibly more complex than it seems, it takes a turn that is a little suspect ... "I once had a child, and it saved my life And I never even asked his name I just looked into his wondrous eyes And said : "never never never again"... And all too soon I did return Just like a moth to a flame So rattle my bones all over the stones I'm only a beggar-man whom nobody owns Oh, see how words as old as sin Fit me like a glove I'm here and here I'll stay Together we lie, together we pray "Climb upon my knee sonny boy although you're only three ... And your mother she just never knew" as Morrissey often does he leaves little clues, I don't know if these words hint at pedophilia but the theme of child abuse and the church have popped up in other lyrics. I feel this one is open to interpretation.

it will grow on you. Lyrically one of their most interesting and musically one of their most hypnotic. Beautifully dark song I love it.

Discovered The Smiths in 1986 at The Record Rack in Houston. This is my least favorite song of theirs. Never got into it. But LOVE The Smiths. If you want a laugh, search Morrissey visits Record Rack to see Texas in the 89s.

Like suffer little children i think the lyrics address his childhood fears of the moors murders near his home in Manchester.

Yes! I’m hyped to see this review. Also please react to Oasis - Wonderwall They were a band from Manchester UK en basically dominated the mid 90’s and it’s nice to know the backstory of the two brothers.

They lived just round the corner from me. I live on the next street to where Bonehead lived and the cover of Definitely Maybe was shot, also the Shakermaker video was shot in my communal back garden. Liam used to have a scooter and would've just been a football hooligan just like most lads back in the day. Never met Noel. They're about the 5th best to come from my city....they support Man City though .....

Oasis are kind of the antithesis of The Smiths, with highly derivative melodies and nonsensical meaningless lyrics

The meaning of the song is not difficult to work out at all. It's obvious. It's about someone that wants to tell his estranged son, that he would be there, at his bedside to comfort him from his nightmares. The imagery, 'A piano plays in an empty room, there'll be blood on the cleaver tonight', conjures up the visions of nightmares. 'Please don't cry, for the ghost, and the storm outside, will not invade your sacred mind...' (probably got some of the lyrics wrong), says the same thing. 'Ceiling shadows shimmy by, and when the wardrobe towers like a beat of prey, I'll still be by your side', are also the things that occupy the frightened imaginations of children in bed. The singer being in the first person, is musing what he wishes he could do, but is not present to do so, so it's a father that, for whatever reason, is not able to be physically there for his child. 'So rattle my bones all over the stones, I'm only a beggar man that nobody owns'; perhaps he was a drunk, the reason for his absence from fatherhood, and drifts from place to place, drinking more to fight the pain: 'See how words as old as sin, fit me like a glove...'.

The first half of the song is beautiful and comforting, but by the second half you realise the narrative is about a child abuser.

Dont take these songs too literally. They're not Autobiographical.

Many people do get very literal with his lyrics, Morrissey is a gifted writer and uses his talent and imagination to craft his songs, and as we all know, he doesn't have a child! I feel this song hints at something sinister and the words if you look at them start to get a little creepy, I think he is hinting at something in a very subtle way

If you lack emotional intelligence...skip this track. This song is ALL about the lyrics. Not to say the basic little guitar riff isn't glorious but there's really no outstanding catchy chorus line like you'd get in a regular formatted song..BUTT. For you uber intellectuals, like I strive to be... This is pure Shakespeare but written in our own good cook language. It's just sheer poetry dude.
