I.
1. What is the snake trying to escape from?
2. Is it a harmful snake? What is its colour?
3. The poet finds the snake beautiful. Find the words he uses to convey its beauty.

5. Where was the snake before anyone saw it and chased it away? Where does the snake disappear?
Answer
1. The snake is trying to escape from the stick.
2. No, it is not a harmful snake. Its small size renders it harmless even to the children. The snake is green in colour.
3. The words the poet uses to convey the snake’s beauty are “beautiful” and “graceful”.
4. The poet wishes that the snake be left unharmed. He wants it to go over the water into the reeds to hide.
5. The snake was lying on the sand till someone saw it and again chased it away. The snake
disappeared in the ripples of the water among the green reeds.

1. Find out as much as you can about different kinds of snakes (from books in the library, or from the Internet). Are they all poisonous? Find out the names of some poisonous snakes.
Answer
1. No, all snakes are not poisonous. Some of the poisonous snakes are Indian Cobra, Common Krait, Russell's Viper and Saw-scaled Viper.

Notes: ▪ Written by: W.W.E. Ross ▪ He is pleading with human beings to treat snakes with kindness. ▪ There is no rhyming scheme in this poem. Stanza 1: ▪ He is describing the snake as a beautiful animal with graceful movements ▪ ‘The pursuing stick means’ that the snake is being chased by a man holding a stick, trying to kill the snake. ▪ ‘With sudden carvings of thin long body’ emphasizes the twists and turns the snake takes to evade being attacked by the stick. ▪ The poet finds the shapes it makes while moving to be ‘graceful, charming and elegant’ Stanza 2: ▪ ‘Small & green, he is harmless even to children’ This means that the snake is non-venomous. He can cause no harm to children. Such harmless and unprovoking snakes do not deserve to be killed. ▪ ‘O let him go over the water, into the reeds to hide without hurt’ Here the author is requesting the man chasing the snake to let the snake escape to safety by slithering into the water, so he may go to another bank where he may himself among the reeds. Stanza 3: ▪ ‘Along the sand, he lay until observed and chased away’ This means that the innocent, harmless snake was lying on the sandy bank of the pond till he was seen by a man. The men were terrified by seeing the snake that they attempted to kill the snake, even when they meant no danger. ▪ ‘And now, he vanishes in the ripples among the slim green reeds’ This means that the snake until now was basking comfortably on the sands and had to flee there to escape the attack. He moved into the water body, glided over it to the other side creating ripples in the water. Finally going on to hiding amongst the green reeds. The snake being green could easily camouflage with the slim green reeds. The message of the poem: The poem conveys a message that all creatures of nature need to be treated in a kind and sympathetic manner. Even snakes must not be attacked, because they do not bite unless they sense a danger to their life or if we provoke them. Moreover, there are certain varieties of snakes that are not poisonous, hence harmless.

'Pursue' basically means to follow or chase someone or something. Here the poet has used the phrase 'pursuing stick' which actually means a person who is holding the stick is pursuing means chasing the snake. The poet has used TRANSFERRED EPITHET here as the phrase actually talks about a person since the stick is not pursuing the snake.
