This vid was a nice change of pace. It's nice to see somebody on KZfaq that's a tool lover that actually uses their fucking tools! Also, this makes me realize I need to slow down a tad and be slightly more efficient in the way I do shit. Sometimes I just get too wound up. Keep up the good vids!

Wholey shit.. I am a heavy truck mechanic for a fleet and our days are very different but also quite similar, I even start my day at the same time with a tims, I've also worked that same shift, I love having 3 days off in a row every week. I was in automotive before and was offered a job in heavy duty so I started all over. I miss having a lift, everything is done on the ground with jack stands and a creeper. However I don't miss working on the general public's shit or the dealership politics/upselling. I often think about going back to automotive, but I'm probably behind now in knowledge and my 1/4" drive selection haha.... plus bending over hoods kills my back. Thanks for the vid it was a nice look into a current day as a dealer tech.

I second that. I work with heavy equipment. You can't paint the floors, the mud an grit just roles right in and grinds it up. Then once you have some machinery in, the torch for the perma-stuck giant bolts drop molten metal all about. We do try to keep things clean, but our customers are not driving haughty cars in the door. We don't cater to an image, only a real action.

I just got hired by the Navy as an Auto Tech starting at $14/hr as light maintenance / repair tech / part's runner. The flat-rate guys only get $19.75/flat rate hour. But as a full time we get full Govt benefits. I'm ASE informally trained but not certified. I was thinking about getting the new ASE cert so maybe the full ASE techs might respect me more as I'm going in with all Snap-On tools... I saw a lot of Craftsman. It's my first auto tech job. I've been turning wrenching since I was 6 with my father who was a ASE / GM Master tech.. 7AM - 4PM with 1hr lunch, M-F. I'm using my father's Snap-on tools, he bought them early 80's, after a brief check of the date marks, oldest ones I've found is 1964... When I told him the price of them today, he laughed, "I only paid $75 bucks for that rachet new off the truck now it's $175"

oh my god great vid. Did i from 17:54 to 18:15 time in the video, the tool that i have been asking for for months? Yes it is baby. The split-beam! kick ass. woo-hoo. you sure love to go fast to torque the wheels. Ask your dealership to get a CDI Digital torque Checker. It checks torque wrenches for accuracy up to 1% ft-lbs or N-m. I know i have one. it kicks ass. thanks again. Its okay if you have a clicker wrench as well.

Why is it, the larger and more complex the machines you work on, the less Snap-On matters. I know in schools, Snap-On sponsors automotive classes the most as a way of initial marketing. As you go up the ladder to your A&P license (meaning you are an aircraft mechanic), Snap-On is virtually not present? Once you hit heavy machinery, factory machines and air planes, the tool ego is just mostly gone. Oh well I guess, but it's a thorough reminder why I don't buy parts and avoid service at dealerships. That shop is nice, but it's a major reason why a $20 part costs $150 at a dealership and why plugging in a code reader for a minute costs $100. I'll use a local GM dealership as an example, very pretty shop. A flap actuator by AcDelco at the dealership cost $220. I ordered the same part by AcDelco from a local parts store for $30 with the same warranty. That's a wide spread, but it makes sense when you look at the buildings.

Just curious what do you mean when you say get time taken away from you for punching out too early? I guess I've never payed much attention to the different methods of compensation out there for techs. I'm a tech at an independent shop where we get paid 45% of labor and we just grab tickets at will with no dispatch. It works well for us because we tend to stay plenty busy. I do work in all areas and handle most of the diagnostics/driveability as the other techs aren't really as knowledgeable with automotive electrical systems. A lab scope and wiring diagrams are just really therapeutic to me lol

That transmission sounds terrible did u figure what was the issue. I think some have chains in them find of like transfer case. I bet it was worse in person. We ran a transmission on cool aid before was working till it boiled. Watched slant six run wide open for 10 min with rod knocking entire time finely blew hole in block crank was glowing red no oil left in it. Did some messed up stuff just to see what would happen. We put v8 in the duster after we killed slant 6.

John Gibson I'm actually in the middle of changing it with a good used one. One thing I know about Honda is you don't take the automatic ones apart. Haha

Question: Just getting into the world of torque wrenches... That wrench is probably +450 ft-lbs on a car that probably needs 100 ft-lbs of torque on the lugs. How do you regulate the torque without a conversion stick? After taking my car to the shop I usually need to take my lugs off with a torque wrench, but I always put them back on with a tire iron cause I'm not sure how to keep from over-tightening with my DeWalt wrench... Any advice?

On the massively beating Book Time... I imagine there are some jobs where you have trouble hitting book time...where a particular job you wonder WTF?? or do most of the times seem to be fair ( I know that book Time is supposed to have been done with hand tools. but a real mechanic does it with electric or air )

deepsquat600 true very true. There are a lot of times like that. For the most part we do ok though. Warranty times can be really unfair sometimes.
