Ernest Hemingway’s classic tale gets the Hollywood treatment in this 1952 adventure from Twentieth Century Fox. Gregory Peck stars as Harry Street, a hunter reflecting on his life as he lies dying while on safari in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro. The movie, which also starred Ava Gardner and Susan Hayward, received Oscar nominations for cinematography and art direction, and was listed as one of the top ten films of the year by the National Board of Review. Thanks to a star-studded cast and some exotic location shooting, the film was one of the great successes of the early 1950s.
Directors: Henry King, Roy Ward Baker
Writer: Casey Robinson
Starring: Gregory Peck, Susan Hayward, Ava Gardner, Hildegard Knef, Leo G. Carroll

When movies actually told a story and relied on the actors to tell it. Unlike today, where movies are created to push or enforce the narrative of the day, special effects are the storyline and actors are mere props. This is such a truly beautiful movie and Gregory Peck and Ava Gardner are phenomenal together. Thank for posting this timeless treasure in a day where timeless treasures are increasingly hard to find....

Yeh nowadays we need to play like rhinos are not hunted. Nor elephants are not hunted for the ivory. No elephant poachers in Africa anymore. Would love to know what is your opinion on rodeo. A man ropes a helpless baby calf running down the arena and tries to ride a bull with sharp spurs that hurts and cuts the ribs of the bull. I am surprised that rodeo is allowed for present day viewing. But people fill up the grandstands every rodeo. How is that?

@@anurag684 No, she did many movies. It was Hollywood who used her and spat her out. So many actresses like her in those days were contracted to one big studio and had to do all the movies that came their way. Once they hit their 40s though the studios stopped offering them any roles and had their contracts terminated. Ava Gardner was also considered 'difficult' because she questioned some of the roles that were given to her - she was tired of playing the 'femme fatale' role all the time. She wanted to do something more serious but her ravishing beauty was a curse for her career.

The film, as a film, is excellent. The jarring aspect is the hunting for game sequences - given today's response to such things. It is obviously about Hemingway's life. No wonder he travelled so much, to seek inspiration for writing. The central dilemma? Writing or his gorgeous wife, played by Ava Gardner. Often, one partner has to give way to the other, with unhappy outcomes.

@wolfen244 - I’m not going to pretend to grasp the ways of Divinity, as I certainly do not. What I do ascribe to is the belief that the Almighty is beyond our understanding. If He chooses to send someone, or generations of someones, back for another earthly life, then that will happen. My life has been filled with spiritual oddities, a near death experience, and a number of out of body experiences, to include remote viewing. My own mother was very psychic and spiritual, and I inherited a tiny percentage of her abilities. Enough to know that the world is not entirely made up of flesh and blood existing only in the here and now. Although I am a Christian, I do not dispute or disbelieve your experiences as I have had too many of my own that cannot be explained away. What I am astounded by is the power of love. I know it can last to the grave. You tell us it can go beyond. Why not? I have encountered no greater force in my lifetime and cannot grasp its depth or limitations. You might enjoy watching Boris Karloff in “The Mummy,” a 1930s film about love surviving the centuries. Produced as a horror movie, it is really a love story that supersedes simple romantic love and takes it to another level.
