If the A7CII gets hotter on the outside, that's a good sign. It means they managed to transfer the heat from the inside to the outside. What explains why it doesn't overheat so easily.

Nope, the A7RV body had the same body temperature as the A7IV but lasted until dead battery so body temperature has little to no effect on video duration.

@@Rocky-AR Now you are comparing two different sensors though. Besides body temperature alone isn't the point, it's the distribution. More surface hot, more heat in total transfered to the outside.

@@maggnet4829 A higher megapixel sensor with the same heat map distribution as A7IV but doesn't overheat. Bringing up distribution doesn't help your explanation at all.

@@Rocky-ARYou lost me there. The video compares the heat maps of the A7IV and the A7CII. The later shows more even and better heat transfer to the outside. I'm not sure what you are talking about, but I doubt the A7RV and A7IV can be easily compared. Higher megapixels does not need to lead to higher heat in video mode, since for starters you are not using all the pixels available to you. I even would assume the higher megapixels of the sensor do not matter at all regarding heat production in video mode, but rather what is processing those pixels in the background and how many pixels you are actually using for the video mode. E.g. the A7IV oversamples from 7k down to 4k.

As far as the heat goes, are you using them on the standard or the high temperature setting? My A7IV is basically unusable for video unless I put it in the high temp setting.

Regarding the heat differences and recording times. It's possible that the A7C's heat transmission is better. Means that the heat gets better transmitted to the camera body and therefore the actual heat on the chipset etc. is lower.

Thanks Manny. I went with the a7rv. Why EVF. I have the zve1 and don’t really like the built in lut results. The reframing feature has a warping effect on the edge. Use it once. Cheers

Love this review. I'm thinking about upgrading my a7c or not, and this video was very helpful. Maybe I will choose to get a new lens instead of a new camera. These new features are not enough yet, so I will keep my silver a7c.

No coolings fans and every camera without a dedicated fan will overheat, but these are hitting like 2 hours without overheating in 4k60.

I have the X-T5 for a year now and even if it's an upgrade over the x-t3, it's still produce tons of noise when recovering from shadows in DR and I have more missed AF in landscape than x-t3! Now I am tempted to switch to the Sony A7Cii, is it a "fun" camera that push you to go out and take shots or it's like the A7iv?

the a7iv anti dust shutter curtain design is flawed causing some users having it get stuck and becomes useless. hopefully this is not am issue with a7c2

Manny, do you know if the A7C mark 2 can have programmed jpegs to make them turnout exactly the way Nikon would look in color science? So one time putting in a creative style and never have to grade it afterwards? Is it possible to program in the Nikon colors? For photography.

The longer recording time on the A7CIi has been extended via software. Basically Sony decided to let the camera go hotter before shutting down. That tells me that they could improve that ( if they wanted )on all other cameras such as the A7IV for example. But of course it’s unlikely that would happen.

What this thermal imaging camera shows is that this c-series camera uses superior materials compared to the m-series camera. In the case of the m series, the back plate where the sensor touches is made of plastic material, which is disadvantageous in heat dissipation. This c series would have used a back plate material that is advantageous for heat dissipation, and it is probably magnesium.

Its so interesting to see how the Sony A7CII & Sony A7CR compared to cameras they are based on. Especially the Sony A7C II. The value is so amazing. IMO, I believe the A7CII is an "upgrade" compared to the Sony a7IV. For the Sony A7CR I see it as a "downgrade" from the Sony A7R5. Generally speaking of course.

I am even more convinced never to buy these cameras. Thanks for the honest review. I've got the A74 back in sight for a good B-cam to my A7S3. By the way, the thermal imaging shows better heat dissipation...which is a good thing. That is why it shows more heat. This means if you use a cage on it, you'll get better cooling because you're making less contact with the camera body.

The video is misleading, it shows @4:35 the shutter is closed protecting the sensor. In fact, the camera doesn't have a first curtain shutter and doesn't cover over the sensor.

Yes ! Get this one the A7CII, does not overheat, much better AF, more features, LUTS, lighter and cheaper.

For overheating shutdowns, i can tell that it's due to different shutdown parameters in both cameras, a7c series has higher threshold, a7iv parameter is lower, it's clear that with a firmware update a7 iv can do much longer shoots by looking at hotter working a7c.

The A7RV has the 8-Step IBIS only with certain Sony lenses. How is it the with the 7 Stops of the new A7Cs? If it works with all lenses at 7 Stops, I think it is far superior.

After watching a lot of review of these new camera bodies I've upgraded from a7c to a7iv. The main reason for that is ergonomics, all buttons feel much better(they're more smooth and have deeper travel distance), grip has softer texture and it is easier to carry the camera with +500g lens for 2-3hours straight. And you don't need an additional grip or cage(btw with cage a7c is heavier than a7iv). IMO a7iv is more enjoyable tool to use! Btw, this is the coolest review of a7cii and a7cr I've watched!

I was so disappointed that Sony refused to upgrade that EVF & LCD especially for the a7cr. Sometimes being able to zoom in on the picture with the EVF is a great tool. It woulda made sense to have the same a7rv EVF! Unbelievable!!!

Gerald Undone recently did a video about overheating tests on Sony, it seems a bit random in general. From my own experience sometimes my ZV-E1 records for 7+ hours with no issues at all with external power, and sometimes it shuts off in 30 minutes despite the room being colder with more airflow, it's weird! - Something up with how Sony determine when a camera has overheated.

"It was hotter outside and to the touch ... and for some reason it managed to outlast the A7iv" => that's why!! The CPU and sensors were kept cooler by evacuating the heat. You actually want the camera to be hot to the touch.

Hi everyone, a few years ago I had A7III with Sigma 35 1.4 and Sigma 105 1.4. I currently have a Canon R6 and I have RF 50 1.8, EF 135 2.0 and EF 300 4.0. I'm considering returning to Sony for the greater variety of lenses available on the market. I make mixed use of it: portraits, sports (motocross, football), events, videos; must be a workhorse. Do you recommend A7IV?

I had sony a7 iii with sigma 35 1.4 too. And I 'd got sony a7 iv one week ago . In the sweden a7iv cheaper then a7cii 600 $ ( with cashback)😊. Two card is perfect for your work.

I really feel like the a6700 is the best camera for the money out of the new smaller form factors released. I think the a7CR is the worst value for the money, with the a7Cii coming up in the middle. Sure it's ASPC but you're getting a much faster sensor for $300 less than the a7cii.

I wanted the embedded Lut feature on my RV but also respected the fact that it was only introduced towards the FX line and the Z1 being they favor video, BUT throwing it on the CR is making me feel some type of way, 🤬

I feel the same way. I have the A7IV and this one "is better in ways it shouldn't be better" I get they're newer bodies but it feels weird to have the compact versions with more features.

I am a Sony FX3 ($4000) and A7IV ($2500) owner and I am PISSED... Not even gonna go into details... But I had to wait over a year for the FX3 update to have focus breathing compensation... and now these two cameras with the AI autofocus... when are we gonna get those in the more expensive bodies?? Probably never... because of their limitations... Honestly the A7CII, A7CR and ZV-E1 are the ultimate trio for hybrid/photo/video and you can get all 3 with less than $8k ($7500) meanwhile an A7IV, A7RV, FX3 trio would put you over 10k ($10,500). 3k difference in price and not that much difference in specs... Sony are you KIDDING me? #sony #sonyalpha 😠

I wish A7CR has the same LCD screen as A7RV, be happy to pay extra $300 for it. A7R ii on the other hand will be way more attractive if it is $300 cheaper.

I think a7cII gives more value and a7cr looks more like a7cII than a7r5, if I switch from my a7c I think a7cII is worth it, but a7cr is a bit overpriced, despite being cheaper. Maybe because a7r5 was released sooner, I do not know, but you get so many more features with a7cII one a7iv

So regarding why hotter camera is not overheating , So if it's hotter to touch So this means that camera is actually doing better job of transferring heat from chip to outside to keep temp down on chip so I assume they designed body in the way that disopeits heat more efficiently so down side of this its hotter camera to touch ( and shows hoter on camera ) but actually it's better ask any one who knows anything about thermodynamic

Depends what for. If it’s for photography definitely a7iv. Dual card slots. Full mechanical shutter up to 1/8000, better EVF , Better flash sync speed.

@@kevinmeydio2289 colour science is the same it’s the same processor. autofocus better on a7cii but I have the A7IV and the autofocus is already stellar. Personally for photography I’d never consider a camera without a full mechanical shutter ,max shutter speed of 1/4000 etc. completely would rule the a7cii out unless the use in photography unless the use case is for video only.

I've seen so many press releases saying the A7CR has "full frame 4K60" but then add "with a 1.2x crop". I mean, that's NOT full frame. LOL. Pretty sus. I owned a Canon 1D Mark III for 12 years and that was a 1.3x crop camera and at no time was it ever advertised as full frame. The original R6 had a 1.07x crop and that's probably OK to call full frame but 1.2x is not (the R6 II is 100% full frame in 4k60 which is why I bought it over the A7IV).

yea those are the major decision features between the A7IV and A7cii. As for me, I don't need dual SD slots but actually need the upgrades to the live web streaming feature (i.e. 4k30p vs 4k15p)
