one summer i worked at the factory assembling Midiverbs II's in the late 80's, it was a tedious boring job, but fun coworkers, anyway, for fun we used to write little messages inside the units, so check it out, lemme know ;) nice demo BTW!

Lol. Back in the early 90s, I used to use parallel 4th power chords with a tremelo arm to try to replicate Shield's sound. I met Billy Corgan in August of 2000 and he was saying he used a lot of reverb. Funny.

I love your videos buddy, I remember watching this one over and over before ordering my first reverb pedal years ago now. One aspect of the Cathedral demo that should be mentioned is that you never actually turned the pre-delay off, as far as I can tell. Now, if the pre-delay knob is set to something above zero when you turn the pedal on, I think it might actually stay disengaged until you wiggle the knob (I'm having trouble remembering) - but it actually did sound like yours was enabled right from the get-go. When the knob is in the 7 or 8 o' clock (10-30% ish) range, the pre-delay is very very short, such that your eyeballs or camera might not actually pick up the delay light flashing cause it's flashing too rapidly. You will most *definitely* hear the difference in your signal though, as you're overlapping a few dozen reverberations rather than just one, for a much more dramatic effect - fatter and more washed out. A very rapid, modulated delay fed into a distortion (or vice versa, to taste) is actually a great way to achieve some beautiful soundwalls without using reverb at all - or, acoustic purists might argue that a wash of short delays doesn't just approximate a reverb, it literally *is* an emulation of reverberation like you'd hear in a cave or cathedral, as it were....

If I stack the Gated Reverb of the Digiverb with the reverse of the Rv-7 do you think I'd be able to emulate the sound of the Bloom setting on the Alesis?
@berlinshoegazer
@berlinshoegazer 2 жыл бұрын
No. Because the Bloom setting has a very long decay time and none of the other two reverbs (gates and reverse) have a long decay time. But if you would add some delay in the end of the chain it could get very close.

OK, here's an idea to share. I think that very few reverse reverbs actually get a usable sound. I think that in a mix, a time gap between the original input signal and the effect can be fine, but I like how some people get the effect right on the beat. Sometimes, that's done in a DAW during mixing, but I believe there is a way to get it for a live sound as well. Some multi-effects units, if not some pedals, in the past have offered a reverse delay. From what I could tell, this was basically done digitally, by taking the first tap of the delay and reversing it before feeding it into the subsequent taps (which were not reversed, for obvious reasons). I read about one person somewhere, who took a single reverse delay tap set to slapback at super-short duration and fed that into a reverb of choice. I'm guessing that this was fully wet, and maybe parallel to a second copy of the input, cuz that's what I'd do. I'm not sure if I ever heard the results of this chain for myself, but I have heard a reverse delay alone once or twice, and it sounds like you might expect. I cannot recall who did it, but I'm pretty sure it was in a guitar magazine a decade or two ago. Anyway, I think this would probably make for a much more controllable and customizable reverse reverb effect. Some possible alterations might be to first feed the reverse delay with a very short-duration reverb tail, and then go into another reverb as before; as well as adding chorus or other modulation effects in different spots. Has anyone tried this, or have info on where to get ahold of a unit that can do reverse delay? I'm going to scour the online music shops tomorrow and see what I can come up with. I'm thinking that maybe Line 6, Zoom, or TC has it already in something.
@berlinshoegazer
@berlinshoegazer 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Rob, nice and interesting thoughts. Thank you for sharing those. It could work but I guess it's still not the real charm of a reversed reverb since those are gated at the effect's end - not fading out like a usual reverb sound. I'm experementing with the EHX Superego at the moment and it is (when the dry signal is turned off in 'auto mode') like an instantly attacking reverse reverb. super easy to handle. only problem is: you can not use the whammy bar as the input signal is kind of looped instead of constantly played by hand. you would need a digitech Whammy or Pitchfork with an expression pedal to fake it.
@robcerasuolo9207
@robcerasuolo9207 6 жыл бұрын
SHOEGAZER Gotcha! I guess it's a matter of which order the delay and reverb are in, too. Each sequence will yield different results. When you said, "gated at the end," what did you mean? I wasn't too clear on that. I have experience gated reverb sounds, but most of the reverbs I've encountered don't do that. I probably wouldn't use a gated reverb, but compressing it a little bit might be cool. I have some other ideas for reverse sounds that would require a DAW, PRE, or other programming functionality to work well. I'm going to try all available ideas to see what works best for me. I'll look into that Superego pedal some more to see how they've done it. I'm probably not going to do any of the whammy bar gliding thing, myself, cuz it wouldn't work so well with how I write in most cases (putting it succintly). I think it's cool when it works, though. I'm mostly after being able to use effects to create pad-like sounds. That's how I think about a lot of this stuff. Plus, I probably suck too much at playing to do any more than that--LOL!--so I figure I could make myself useful that way and let someone else do the good stuff.
@cyoung7127
@cyoung7127 6 жыл бұрын
I use a Digitech Whammy to simulate a whammy bar and then I run that through a Hoof Fuzz and my Superego, which sounds sounds pretty good. I usually end up tweaking settings on the Superego often though, because the gliss attack is hard to reign in exactly how I want and would prefer to have a good reverse verb in front of it and use the Superego to guide it or give it more definition.

I own the Cathedral, but the slower reverse is kinda not working for me. The reverse on my Alesis Microverb 3 comes in faster and therefore is more controlable for me while playing. How do you compare the reverse from the Polara with those two? Is it coming slower like on the Cathedral or more faster like on the Microverb?
@berlinshoegazer

You can set it up like you want it. I like it a bit slower so I decided myself for the Polara and RV7. But it can also be very short like the Midiverb II and III.

I would always recommend the RV7 and the Polara for the Reverse sound. It's the best in my ears. Cathedral does the job a well but I think it's to huge for a pedalboard. Unfortunitily I never got the chance to check the Oceans 11 by EHX.

kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fL-Dhbd-qb69dps.html The reverse mode of the Oceans 11 sounds a bit metallic and thin. I personally wouldn't like that. But the pedals has a lot of other cool sounds instead.

Check out the Holy Grail max if you’re into Ehx stuff. Its reverse sound is really good, it’s possible to blend the clean signal with it and have full reverse w/ maxed Mix knob. It’s better than the ehx Oceans 11 reverse in my opinion, for some reason the holy grail max sounds more natural

The Cathedral is not an analogue reverb. A real analogue reverb doesn't really exist in pedal form. You'll need a proper spring-reverb tank or a real plate-reverb devices that are really expensive. That doesn't mean the Cathedral doesn't sound good, it sounds great!

For anyone else looking at this, I bought a Marshall Reflector and didn't find it that useful for shoegaze. The reverse mode is very short and it plays the dry signal first, like a reverse delay - there is no way to play only the reversed sound.

that should be caused by your "dry/wet" mix that's probably set to 100%, which means that only the effect is played. You should put it at 50%, so it is a mix of clean and effect. (This knob is called "level" in the pedal in the video, but it has multiple names, "blend" is also much used)
