Gothic
Region: Oium, Dacia, Pannonia, Dalmatia, Italy, Gallia Narbonensis, Gallia Aquitania, Hispania, Crimea, North Caucasus.
Era: attested 3rd-10th century; related dialects survived until 18th century in Crimea
Language family: Indo-European (Germanic)
Gothic is an extinct East Germanic language that was spoken by the Goths. It is known primarily from the Codex Argenteus, a 6th-century copy of a 4th-century Bible translation, and is the only East Germanic language with a sizable text corpus. All others, including Burgundian and Vandalic, are known, if at all, only from proper names that survived in historical accounts, and from loanwords in other languages such as Portuguese, Spanish, and French.
As a Germanic language, Gothic is a part of the Indo-European language family. It is the earliest Germanic language that is attested in any sizable texts, but it lacks any modern descendants. The oldest documents in Gothic date back to the fourth century. The language was in decline by the mid-sixth century, partly because of the military defeat of the Goths at the hands of the Franks, the elimination of the Goths in Italy, and geographic isolation (in Spain the Gothic language lost its last and probably already declining function as a church language when the Visigoths converted to Catholicism in 589). The language survived as a domestic language in the Iberian peninsula (modern Spain and Portugal) as late as the eighth century. Gothic-seeming terms are found in manuscripts subsequent to this date, but these may or may not belong to the same language. In particular, a language known as Crimean Gothic survived in the lower Danube area and in isolated mountain regions in Crimea. Lacking certain sound changes characteristic of Gothic, however, Crimean Gothic cannot be a lineal descendant of Bible Gothic.
The existence of such early attested texts makes it a language of considerable interest in comparative linguistics.
If you are interested to see your native language/dialect to be featured here. Submit your recordings to crystalsky0124@gmail.com. Looking forward to hearing from you!

From what I read the Western German dialect gained prominence in the region because as always the higher classes seen it as a prestigious language which became led German to become more dominant in the region thus, the Eastern Germanic languages fell out of favour and the other Germanic languages branching off from the High German branch into the Lower Germanic Branch becoming influenced with Latin and Celtic languages like, Dutch, English, and Frisian. The Scandinavian Languages are under a different subdivision.

I like how it's close to old German / Netherlandic but also rather close to the North Germanic languages. @@Omnatten9 No, it was an eastern germanic language and died out with no modern descendants. Its close relatives, the west and north germanic languages lived on though and its descendents are the modern germanic languages. Gothic may have influenced them a tiny bit but not much. Its like if the Gorilla would die out, its relative, the Chimpanzee would continue the primate line, but the distict Gorilla features would be lost.
@hoathanatos6179
@hoathanatos6179 3 жыл бұрын
@@MMadesen Well Crimean Gothic survived into the 18th century but it has a lot of features that resemble West Germanic languages. So much so that it is thought that the language was heavily influenced by the Low and Middle German speakers who migrated into the region, or that it was actually the West Germanic language of the immigrants which was heavily influenced and mixed with the surviving Gothic tongue. With the retention of the Proto-Germanic s, which underwent heavy rhoticization in many West Germanic languages, and even more intensely in Scandinavian languages, I.e. Ies vs Hochdeutsch Er; medial -d- that went extinct in Northern and Western Germanic tongues, I.e. Vier and Four vs Gothic Fyder; medial -j- becoming pronounced as an English J, I.e. Hochdeutsch Ei vs Gothic Adja; and the retention of dental fricatives like English, Icelandic, and Faroese, i.e. Gothic and English The vs Dutch and Low German De; I would have to assume that it was an East Germanic language that was just heavily influenced by the West Germanic migrants into Ukraine and Russia seeking land to cultivate.

Although the language is extinct, there are loan words in Spanish, French, and Portuguese from the Visigoths. Especially in our names. The Visigoths eventually fully assimilated into Hispano-Romano culture, and I wonder how great an impact they made on Hispanic culture. Like how different would we be today had they not influenced Iberia for hundreds of years?

It would be be so nice if these people still continued to speak Gothic. They probably also generated some consonant shifts during the last centuries so this old language might be now similar unintelligible to modern day Goths like Old German for Germans or Old Anglish for English (and modern Visigoth might be a bit different to modern Ostrogoth!) but to imagine that modern Goths are still around would be an interesting fact which might have influenced European history in a very big way.

I have a suspicion Finnish and Estonian "and" words are somewhat connected to Gothic. Any ideas? Gothic did evolve relatively close to some older Finnic peoples, alongside peoples more familial and related to Goths - Balts and Slavs. Example in English, Estonian and in Gothic: Fish *and* Bird Kala *ja* Lind Fisks *jah* Fugls Could also be related to Slavic "i" for the word "and". Most Germanic languages seem to have "and, und, en, och, ok, oc, og" but Gothic has "jah". Baltic and Slavic languages of that area also have different "and" words. Unless it's a matter of pronunciation and it's related to "och"s and "og"s. :D
@unraed
@unraed 3 жыл бұрын
it is a loanword from late forms of proto-germanic *jahw, which became common in east-germanic. other old germanic tongues also had that word. Old English Ge, OHG joch, early Old Norse jah, old saxon ja. and, und, en, etc, derived from P-GM *andi, and og, ok, etc, are descendants of P-GM *auk, cognates German Auch, Scandinavian og, och, ok. English eke. Finnish and Estonian have the amount from Proto-Germanic, an example is King in Estonian and Finnish - Kuningas PGM *kuningaz.

Gothic doesn't sound like Romanian, it doesn't look like Romanian, it doesn't work like Romanian, it has a different grammar, different words, different syntax, different ancestry. They're related because of their Indo-European heritage, there's no special connection. Stop spreading misinformation.

@Dovyeon I don’t think so, slavs have nothing to do with the goths. The visigoths literally ruled over Spain for more than a hundred years and their people mixed with the celtorromans that lived in the area. So if we base ourselves in that, Spain and Italy has more rights to claim gothic as the language that the slavic countries together lol

@Dovyeon For what purpose? We conquered this land, fighting goths, overthrowing them, we won, therefore their language was forgotten except for some germanic loanwords in all the slavic languages. While we fought them, iberians obeyed. So, logically thinking, it is iberians whom u should ask to revive this language

Yup, there are quite some groups. I created a news site which published news in Gothic since some years called Himma Daga and am currently in the process of translating Le Petit Prince into the language in cooperation with someone else.

What is really interesting, is how the grammar reminds me of Slavic languages. Well, Germanic and Slavic languages generally have similar grammar (for example, reading poetry in German feels the same as reading poetry in Russian but completely different from reading poetry in French or Spanish) but with this one I can recognize not only the grammatical ''features'' like the same cases used, but literally the same grammatical forms. For example, with bread in Gothic is ''hlaibam'', while in Russian it is ''хлебом'', which sounds just like ''khlebam'', and here I am not only talking about the fact that this word having the same root, I am talking about the ending ''am'' which denotes the case which means ''with''.
@hansmahr8627
@hansmahr8627 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, there are a lot of typical Indo-European features. Though hlaibam is actually dative plural so it corresponds to хлебам, not хлебом, Gothic didn't have an instrumental case (Old High German is the only Germanic language with an instrumental case). The other case forms are not that similar between Russian and Gothic though they derive from the same Proto-Indo-European forms. Хлеб is actually a very old loanword from either Proto-Germanic (*hlaibaz) or Gothic since it can be found in all Slavic languages, for example Bulgarian хляб and Polish chleb. As a native German who's learning Russian (mostly to read Russian literature in the original, it's a beautiful language), I can also confirm the similarities in syntax, especially in poetry. Russian word order is a bit more flexible but there are many construction that seem familiar to me. The biggest difference is probably the extensive use of participles in Russian which is more akin to Latin or Ancient Greek syntax.
