Sardinian or Sard is a Romance language spoken by the Sardinians on most of the island of Sardinia. Many Romance linguists consider it the closest genealogical descendant to Latin. However, it also incorporates a Pre-Latin (mostly Paleo-Sardinian and, to a much lesser degree, Punic) substratum, as well as a Byzantine Greek, Catalan, Spanish and Italian superstratum due to the political history of the island, which became a Byzantine possession followed by a significant period of self-rule, fell into the Iberian sphere of influence in the late Middle Ages, and eventually into the Italian one in the 18th century.
In 1997, Sardinian was recognized by a regional law, along with other languages spoken on the island; in 1999, Sardinian was also granted recognition by the national Law no. 482/1999 with other eleven minoranze linguistiche storiche ("historical linguistic minorities"), among which Sardinian stands out as the numerically biggest, even if continuously decreasing.
However, the vitality of the Sardinian-speaking community is threatened, and UNESCO classifies the language as "definitely endangered", although an estimated 68.4 percent of the islanders reported to have a good oral command of Sardinian in 2007. While the level of language competence is in fact relatively high among the older generation beyond retirement age, it has been estimated to have dropped to less than 13 percent among children, with Sardinian being kept as a heritage language.

interesting .. "language" in Romanian and Sardinian it is called " Limba " . I think they are the only two Romance languages that use this word.

In Occitan, Ligurian, Piemontese, Emilian and other languages of southern France and Northern Italy (southern Gallo-Romance family) we use Limba too

@@iltoni6895 No. It's something like "lenga" or "lengo" in Occitan and some variation of "lengua", "lingua" or "lenga" in most if not all Gallo Italic languages. i don't know how you got that information.

In some Romance languages the Latin velar phonemes [k] [g] become bilabial [p] [b]. You can also see it in the words Apa or Patru in Romanian: (S ') abba, bàttor in Sardinian. Lingua, Aqua, Quattuor in Latin

African latin was the closest language to Sardinian latin but unfortunately it is a dead language now.

Most words in latin tended to end with an U (Un , Us) just like Sardinian. And in portuguese, every words that ends with an O, it's pronounced as an U. That's why sardinian and portuguese words sound so similar to each other

Definitely sounds like Italian mixed with Spanish (specifically Catalonian mixed with Sicilian and Neapolitan) with a little bit of Greek added in. Makes sense considering the history of that island.

I swear to God, the retracted s sound that they have makes it soooo similar, phonologically to Greek. I would have thought initially that the guy pronouncing the words is Greek

Fun fact: although many of other Romance languages use a form of "ille" to mean "the", Sardinian uses a form of "ipse" to do this, "ipse" to drop "ip-" part and taking the today's form as "sa" for "la, la, a" and su for "el, le, o".

@@kame9 The articles are "su/sa" for singular, and "sos/sas" for plural in northern sardinian, while southern sardinian has only one plural article for both masculine and feminine "is" - sos homines / sas feminas = the men, the women (northern sardinian) - is hominis / is feminas = southern sardinian

As a Sardinian, I appreciate the will to spread this ancient language across the world. Although, I have some criticisms to give voice to: the pronunciation is almost entirely wrong and the lack of an accent makes everything really artificial and unnatural. Then, I have to point out the fact that it is not a unitary language, but it is composed of many variations that differ from village to village.

It sounds like a cross between Castilian Spanish and Italien. From the accent, one could even guess Greek.

The sardinian language shown here is a mixture of various dialects, from Logudoro to Goceano and Nuorese; I say so because of a number of incongruences I've seen in the spelling of the words and verbs you wrote here, but it's quite rappresentative of the language spoken in the north and center of Sardinia. You did a really good job. I really enjoyed the video and I'm really happy to see such interest towards my language (i'm from a village of Logudoro). But there are a few suggestions I want to give you: - Never put "H" in front of the verb "àere" (to have), NEVER. For example: it' not "Cantos annos HAS", but "Cantos annos AS"; it's not "Su muschitu HAIAT su nidu", but "Su muschitu AIAT su nidu", and so on. - Consonants C, F, G, P, T, V, Z should never be doubled. The only consonants that can be doubled are L, N, S, R, D, B, M. Here are some examples: maCu, buFare, aGiudu, aPo, iTe, toTu, aVisu, organiZare; beLLu, jaNNA, mateSSi, teRRa, biDDa, aBBa, aMMenta. - The letter "q" is not used under any circumstances and is replaced by "c". Ex: "su Cuadru" (not "su Quadru"). - To represent the sound of velar consonants in front of the vowels "e" and "i" use the letters "c" and "g" in combination with the "h": che, chi, ghe, ghi. So don't write "qui, que", but "chi, che". It's not "queriant" or "quie", but "cheriant" and "chie". - The third person singular and plural of verbs always ends in -t. Ex: isse andaT, issos andanT, isse cheriaT, issos cherianT, etc. - Some of the translations you have used are incorrect or there is a more commonly used word to translate them. Here are some of them: brown = su tanàdu; chips = su pumudèrra/fumudèrra frissu (from "pommes de terre", Fr.); grapes = sa ùa (also "àghina", but "ùa" is more common); potatoes = su pumudèrra/fumudèrra; mushrooms = cugumèddu ("antunna" is a kind of mushroom); ankle = cabìja/crabìga. There you have it, that's all I thought was important to point out. As for the rest, I think you have done a great job and I hope more videos on the Sardinian language will follow. Thanks! P.S. Mi spieghi brevemente come mai mettere l'h di fronte avere è errore capitale? Io la trovo anche piuttosto sensata come cosa. Voglio dire, anche in italiano non c'è un reale suono riconducibile all'H eppure si scrive "ho mangiato", e questo non tanto per la sonanza in se, ma più per ricondurre il verbo alle proprie origini( in latino è HABERE)

@@Jormunn semplicemente perché se andiamo a ritroso nella storia e guardiamo scritti ufficiali in lingua sarda (risalendo sino al tempo dei Giudicati) il verbo "àere" è sempre scritto senza "h". Alcuni scrittori e poeti amatoriali hanno iniziato a anteporre l'h solo a partire dal tardo '800, ovviamente influenzati dalla scrittura del corrispondente verbo in italiano. Inoltre anche la pronuncia è differente, in italiano la "h" indica una pronuncia più dura e secca della lettera "a", mentre in sardo la pronuncia della "a" è più morbida. Infine esistono vari standard ufficiale di scrittura della lingua sarda (come l'LSC) in cui viene specificato che il modo corretto di scrivere il suddetto verbo è proprio senza "h" e questi standard sono stati messi su da persone ben più illustri e qualificate di me che sono solo un semplice appassionato. @@Jormunn inoltre mi hanno fatto notare che in italiano l'h è necessaria anche per distinguere il verbo da determinate parole (per es. HANNO e ANNO oppure HA e A, ecc), mentre in sardo non si ha tale necessità, in quanto non ci sono casi di omonimia. Es: (ITA) "Questi bambini HANNO un ANNO", (SRD) "Custos pitzinnos ant (o tenent) un'annu".

Murru è grigio solo in campidanese? E curva non dovrebbe essere furriada? Tanadu deriva dal tannino? in base al tipo di legno che viene usato per la tintura può dare un colore dal rosso scuro al marrone... a riguardo dei termini usati per fungo il ditzionariu del Puddu li riporta entrambi più altri, quindi sono da considerarsi sinonimi? Riguardo il contributo della h in italiano è praticamente assente nella fonetica, quante vittime avranno fatto hanno/anno,ha/a,ho/o, l'ha/là/la, l'ho/lo nei dettati alle elementari? Nel cinquecento si cercò di eliminare ogni h inutile per risparmiare sui costi della stampa, con opposizione dei dotti, solo alcune forme del verbo avere si salvarono per evitare confusione, l'uso della h nel sardo sembra piuttosto un tentativo di nobilitarlo facendolo somigliare di più al latino, ma a quel punto dovremmo scrivere anche homine e non omine, hora e non ora...

My dad is Sardinian and depending on where you're from you don't even speak the same dialect however he told me that they understand every version of the dialect. It's a language that as a big history and even through it as infulence of many latin languages it's very unique on it genre nowadays.

"He told me that they understand every version of the dialect" it really depends on how much you've been exposed to other dialects. If you've always lived in your village, you can only understand the dialect spoken in your area. Those who have lived in different parts of Sardinia, have a better global understanding of different dialects. Sardinian is a dialect continuum and because there's no agreed upon standardised language there may be differences in speech even from one village to another.

I can see the similarities between Sardinian and Latin. And with Italian. I also see some similarities between it and Portuguese. They say that, in terms of grammar and structure, that Sardinian is the language that is most like Latin. Anyway, great vid, as usual.

@Norax stop to spread bull****. Punic was a semitic language and never influenced Sardinian. Moreover Punics have founded just few colonies along southern Sardinian coast, they didn't impose any kind of language to the locals.

Sardinian has dialects tho. Im from Cagliari (south Sardinia) and for me as a Campidanese-Sardinian speaker this Wren was DIFFICULT to follow. If i stop the video and read i get everything but i think if i lived 2 or 3 weeks in northern Sardinia i would have no problems so it’s a matter of habit

Ajò is quite untranslatable : it has many meanings, not only let's go. We have the same in Corsica: aiò.

@@paulu1053 in romanian we have 'ai' or 'hai'. 'Ai cu mine!' or 'Hai cu mine!' means 'Come with me!' (other form is 'Vino cu mine!) We also use it in many instances not only meaning 'come!' or 'let's'.

@@gabrieledonofrio1612 In some variety of Sardinian you can add personal endings to infinitives "Est ora de dd'acabbares" "It's time you finish it" (In English it would be "It's time for you to stop". Or "a si nn'annarent" (They should leave) literally "To leave themselves". The endings attached to the infinitives are a sort of merge with the ancient latin imperfect subjunctive. These phrases were common in Sardinian spoken 50-100 years ago, but most young people aren't acquainted with these grammatical forms. I read them in a book compiled specifically to save these old testimonies.

Not italian, but Sardinian has been quite far removed from mainland Romance languages in Italy for a very long time. Italian speakers with zero contact to Sardinian would probably have a hard time following.

Not really. Spanish and Catalan are of two different language families (although Catalan borrows vocabulary from Spanish) Sardinian is a language that derived directly from Latin, unlike the other modern romance languages which come from language families that derived from Latin itself. So since Sardinian doesn't have that step in between, it's the closest modern tongue to Latin. They do pronounce the "s" the same way as it's pronounced in Spanish from Spain, that's right

As someone who speaks Sardinian I agree, you can’t really see it from the video due to the vocabulary part being full of loanwords from Italian, but Sardinian central logudoresu dialect (the one that at least the guy is speaking) is really similar to Castillan (like: same sound changes from c and t to g and d for example), probably due to this particular dialect being heavily influenced by it during the Spanish rule of Sardinia.

This is interesting. Sardinian vocabulary seems more similar to Spanish than Italian, but spoken with an Italian accent. Unless the woman speaking was Italian and applied her Italian accent to the Sardinian words.

Sardinian is part of the Southern romance languages. African Romance, sadly dead, was part of the same group too.

@@Adhjie Not italians fleeing, when rome fell most italians fled to the eastern roman empire. And if anything Sardinia was under vandal control at the time, odoacer's italy would have been 1000% better than the arian persecution of catholics the vandals tried because most of italy was catholic. What actually happened was the latin language split off into three different forms of vulgur latin. The first around 100ad or a lil after, but before 200ad I cant remember off the top of my head but it was somewhere around that time. This first vulgur latin split happened in Sardinia, which explains why sardinian is so close to classical latin, having many words that would be considered archaic in the later forms of vulgur latin For example the word for house in classical latin was Dommus. That became something similar in sardinain vulgur latin, and eventually Dommo in Modern Sardinian. Contrast that with the rest of the empire where Dommus fell out of favour. (Cl. Latin Dommus --x--> V. Latin Casa --> Mdn. Portuguese Casa (along with some other latin descendent languages)) In case youre wondering, the second vulgur latin split happened in africa, and I belive in dacia, basically romania, but dont quote me on that last bit. And the third was in the rest of the roman empire

Tf do you mean “African Romance languages” I’m pretty sure Latin was the root of Latin languages including Sardinian and not Sardinian, they already spoke Latin in the Iberian peninsula and the Italian peninsula along with all of the islands around them including Sardinia.

@@iltoni6895 Maltese is close to the arabic Sicilian dialect spoken in the Middle Ages when Sicily was ruled by the Moors ( until the 11th century ), but it has nothing to do with the modern Sicilian language which is romance.

This is the central dialect of the sardinian language, called: barbaricino, from barbagia a montanious central part of the island, and its not the most spoken variant of sardinian. The southern dialect is the most spoken in the island. This can't be called sardinian because there is not an united sardinian language.

This, along with Romanian, are the closest living relatives of Latin. You can really see and hear the similarities in spelling and pronunciation respectively. I pray that Sarda will continue to be spoken!

This is the closest we can get to hearing Vulgar Latin followed by the other Italian languages. Asturianu, Provencal, Catalan, Occitan too stay closer to it than say Castilian or French, Auris > Auricula (diminutive) > Oricla (Vulgar Latin) > Oracla (Dalmatian, extinct), Origra {Sard.}, Orecchia (It.), Oreja {Sp.) Germanic Ear (Eng.) and Ohr (Ger.) are related through Proto-Indoeuropean *Ous
