Border View Farms is a mid-sized family farm that sits on the Ohio-Michigan border. My name is Nathan. I make and edit all of the videos posted here. I farm with my dad, Mark and uncle, Phil. Our part-time employee, Brock, also helps with the filming. 1980 was our first year in Waldron where our main farm is now. Since then we have grown the operation from just a couple hundred acres to over 3,000. Watch my 500th video for a history of our farm I filmed with my dad.
I started making these videos in the fall of 2019 as a way to help show what I do on a daily basis as a farmer. Agriculture is different from any other industry and I believe the more people that are showing their small piece of agriculture, helps to build our story. We face unique challenges and stressful situations but have some of the most rewarding payoffs in the end. I get to spend everyday doing what I love, raising my kids on the farm, and trying to push our farm to be better every year. I hope that I can address questions or concerns that you might have about farms and agriculture.
I hope you enjoy my content and ask questions as you have them. I do my best to answer anything I can. Thanks for watching!
I appreciate you subscribing to my channel and liking my videos. You can also find me on Facebook borderviewfarms and on Instagram @borderviewfarms

Geese are the worst for crops. I was attacked by those damn things when I was on my way into work. The fact of the matter about the fire is that you got there and took care of the problem. Ah Taters and Wheat , as a young pup that is what i thought farming was all about . Back then tater harvest at my uncles was done with crawler tractors. and Olver O C 6 pulled the two row digger then migrant workers with tater forks would fill bushel baskets that were tacked on two wheel flat beds and at 8 years old i ran the oliver O C 3 crawler pulling one of the two flat bed trailers hauling the full bushel baskets stacked five high into the storage where four men would unload and dump each basket on the elevator that piled them in the huge storage building . That was 1954 . In 56 was the year the first two row harvester arrived and now instead of baskets came the home made self unloading wagons and and trucks and the first wheel tractors only to find out that OH the Super 88 did NOT have enough to pull it by it's self and now the O C 6 was put inft of the 88 to add pull power and PONY POWER . That is the year i started working harvested fields to get them ready for wheat . Not till 63 did he get a wheel tractor that would pull the new harvester and that is when he bought the second 806 Farmall sold in my area of N/E Ohio , the first one went to the man i worked for .

On our cotton equipment the yield monitor is basically useless because our humidity will change 80-90% during the day and night while we are running. You’ll quit late one night and then the next morning the next pass will be making 20% more or less then it did the night before. We use the data on our corn beans and wheat but basically ignore it on the cotton picker and stripper.

Did you check your combine weight against the cart on individual loads after you were concerned it may not correct? I often wonder if the increase in power consumption and decrease in yield are the result of incomplete threshing due to tough conditions. The old auger heads made it way easier to pick up on that. Thoughts? My cart doesn't have a scale so just my theory.

Looks like you were let a lot of cobs pass thru your JD into the tank in the corn and that can cause problems in grain handling. Not sure why you let so much foreign material stay in the grain, but it can and should be reduced with simple adjustments. Looked like the dryer fire could have been due to heavy cobs.

My only comment is I would hope the dryer manufacture has a method for handling fire situations. What I mean is the way you emptied the good corn seemed slow. I'm sure there are a tremendous amount of understanding of the dryer system and why it seemed to take a long time to get the corn out, just seemed to be an observation of how the system works. I guess what I'm asking, is there a way to have the dry corn exiting auger run in reverse, exit to the other end into a pile that can be moved with front-end loader? This would elevate the concern of having hot corn go somewhere it should not go. or is the bypass function for the corn allowing it to go somewhere other than into a bin? I understand the bottom doors offer the function of emptying the dryer, just seems like that is for panic situations of getting corn out quickly. Maybe that is the part I'm not embracing on what can be done to empty the dryer when there is an emergency. Next ten days of weather looks good. Guessing you'll be done by Halloween.
@BorderViewFarms
@BorderViewFarms Жыл бұрын
The dryer can only empty as fast and the conveyor and grain leg can take it away. Our leg is rated for 3,000 bu/hr and the dryer holds 2,200 bushels. It took almost 45 minutes to empty. The quick way to to pull the Handel's and dump it onto a pile. We almost did that earlier as that was the quick way to get the fire out. If we wouldn't have been able to get water on it, that would have happened.

@@BorderViewFarms ok, thanks. You shared in this video ideas on possibilities of how the situation happened. Do you go deep into a situation assessment of what happened and how to handle it in the future? Are there sensors that can be added to alert users if things go bad and no one is around?

Nathan - I don't need you to include daily video of you checking the oil or running around with a grease gun to know you're doing it. Please stick to your current content format. Haters are going to hate. Fun fact: You were so focused on giving us a dryer update that you forgot to include the usual BVF opening when editing. Continued success with the harvest. Be safe! 👍

I watch several of those "show everything " channels and notice that they have more issues than BVF So either Nathan doesn't show the breakdowns ( if true why show the dryer issue) or these trolls saying he don't do PM are just idiots.

What is Red Dog? And where does it come from? What's the remedy if the season means you get build up again?

I think Red Dog is the red dust, Chaff that separates from the Corn kernel/cob. Can be a bit sticky especially when wet or high moisture corn.
