I used 11 just for an example. There is no any hard limit of choosing 11 only (I've shown a a good example of 300 lines chart (originally designed by Jorge Camões). Lines are not evil. Colors are, when there are too many. In some cases (it's not necessary about sales) there can be 100 subtle grayed-out lines or just a single gray band (between min and max).But whenever sampling is required, there are different options as well (depends on the data and the purpose of the analysis): random sampling (I won't do that for Contoso sales), top N, filtering by another dimension etc.
