Modern day spanish left wingers try to always depict the spanish civil war as a conflict between democrats and fascists but the dark truth is that each side had factions inside them that hated each other and at some point tried to kill each other to take full control over their own side while they were still fighting against the other side. This phenom was much more common on the republican side and was one of the biggest factors of its defeat.

Because you are in the subject of the Spanish civil war there's a story I hope you talk about it is the story of Melchor Rodríguez García also know as the red Angel he was the last mayor of Madrid before the francoists and the falangists took over although he was an anarchist he pardoned hundreds of fascists that were going to be sentenced to execution which prevented his own execution but during the military junta he passed away in 1972 he was the only anarchist that was allowed to have a public funeral and he was buried with an anarchist flag.

@@mastrey Franco had 800000 men under his control, this is not counting foreign volunteers that weren't there at the start of the war, and the Republicans had about 700000 in the beginning. These exact numbers may be wrong so feel free to correct me, but these numbers feel like around 50% whent to both sides. You are right about the unity, and quality of officers, but their victory can also be attributed to Republican incompetence, not just disunity. Like a good portion of the loyalist army were untrained militias, and the government didn't exactly help by being subservient to the soviets, like at a time they were more focused on transferring their gold reserves to Russia and on arresting anarchists than fighting the Nationalists.

Not only were there Spanish nationalists in the National side, but also localist traditionalists from Navarre and the Basque Country. Franco is often seen as a dumb little man, but the dude managed to unite nationalists, localists, fascists, syndicalists and the Church under his Falange de las JONS. These groups would have had no trouble killing each other if the others didn't exist. The Republicans didn't have a unifying figure like that, and entire fronts were led by political groups who refused to listen to the government too often, like the anarchists in Aragon or the famous Barcelona in-fighting later in the war.

Loyalist Vs Secessionist Most of the SJW hoard would be unironicaly loyalist/pro-establishment but identify They are the least likely to organise based on talent or Merritt but the most likely to have the backing of the state. Would be white leftists but have a taboo against appointing white general's so some may elect minorities who are double agents for other factions or just psychopaths. Ethnic gang's would be split between both sides depends on goals. Those wanting their own homogeneous country would fight the US I see black separationists establishing at least one defensible stronghold early in the war. An effort to funnel black nationalists into the stronghold would be supported by people who agreed with them and people who hate them. This concentrates the black nationalists into the new black state where they would be defending US efforts to retain the territory. White nationalists would be spread across various factions but would secretly support black nationalists(accelerationisim/propaganda victories) and openly endorse efforts to fight them(as enemies of the USA) but the more cunning ones would be supporting the black nationalists rebelling against the United States as that would be a fight between their 2 main potential rivals.

To summarise the whole civil war, it's pretty much like the IJN and the IJA, each military branch trying to kill each other while they were killing themselves at the same time due to all the infighting. In IJN you have the Battleship vs carrier factions fighting each other WHILE fighting the IJA at the same time. In IJA, you have the Tōseiha competing with the Kōdōha for the control of the army while trying to fight the navy at time. The Spanish Civil war may be anything but civil, but at least it's a lot less confusing than trying the understand the military of the Imperial Japan.

Even the phrase “democratically elected government” in reference to the Spanish Civil War is a bit misleading. The Popular Front was involved in a lot of violence and voter intimidation during the election, as well as being installed before the count was finished, allowing them to certify their own electoral victory. It’s still an open question among historians whether the Republicans actually won the 36’ election in terms of plurality of votes.
