The Spanish mastiff is a very old breed of dog that for centuries has been linked to the guard and custody of the sheep herds that transhumance from the snowy mountains of the North of Spain to the winter pastures of Extremadura and Andalusia.
The recovery of this breed that was about to disappear coincides with the increase of the wild populations of brown bears and wolves in Spain.
Today this breed is distributed in areas where there is conflict between the wolf and the brown bear with the cattle.
