The specialist RAF 'enemy' unit using Soviet-era missile systems

To best prepare for an aggressor, allied aircraft must learn to evade threats from both the air and the ground.
The job of playing the enemy on land falls to the 'Threat Emitter Team' - a specialist unit normally based at RAF Spadeadam in Cumbria, who are playing the 'bad guys' with the use of their two Soviet-era missile systems.
Together with the US and the Germans, they have been hiding in forests in northern Sweden, creating the enemy 'Red Force' during Exercise Arctic Challenge.

We captured many USSR systems in Angola when they supported MPLA against UNITA during their civil war in the 1980s. The USSR tended not to use some systems in Europe to maintain secrecy and thought Angola would be a good testing ground. We monitored their electronic emissions for years and had a good idea of their capabilities. South Africa was the first non-Soviet bloc nation to have the SA 8 systems. We still use them for training and exercises against foreign weapons. We did give one of the captured SA 8 systems to the USA. No aircraft fitted with our indigenous self-protection EW systems was ever shot down.

@@deang5622 My own experience of big diesel engines, they have improved but even big American turbocharged engines could smoke a bit. It depends on such things such as load variations. Engine speed drops, injection pump at maximum, and you get smoke. This is part of why constant speed propellors made such a difference for aircraft. You can think of them like a sort of automatic gearbox for a ground vehicle.

@@transkryptioncute whataboutism, (man, all the same everywhere) but I'll play. You mean that incredible target of opportunity that popped up 24 years ago? The one that just happened to ping a plane once out of its entire sortie, and lob a missile at it? One of the two planes the Serbs were able to shoot down in the entire conflict? *shrug* big uos, I guess. How's their air defense doing? Any of them left? 😂 Doesn't really have anything to do with what the other guy said about soviet tech being maintained now, as in currently does it. A better argument would have been "what about all those soviet vehicles Ukraine has been using to destroy Russian soviet tech for the last year?" because their stockpile is actually in pretty good shape for what it is.

@@transkryption You guys always brag that a Soviet SAM shot down an F-117, but never bother to look into it in further detail. The shot was a one-in-a-million chance that was only possible due to a lot of lock and poor planning on the USAF's side. So what if one F-117 goes down? Twenty years and still a corporal? Somebody needs to promote that man.
@bugler75
@bugler75 Жыл бұрын
That’s the modern RAF. It’s a surprise he’s still in at 20 years despite being ‘only’ a Corporal. Probably is retained as he’s an expert on an unusual weapons system. The RAF is very top heavy with Senior Ranks and getting promotion is difficult. And normally you must be a certain rank to have your contract extended. Glad I’m retired from the Armed Forces now. Ian

@bugler75
@bugler75 Жыл бұрын
@@coolspot18 The are annual pay increases (pay bumps I presume? 😊), but yes, you do max out. The RAF isn’t as strict rank wise as the other services. Yes, an Officer is still an Officer, for example, but will let a lower Rank, who is the technical subject matter expert, take the lead. No one is surprised to see Corporals at the 20 year mark. I see the point that perhaps he joined late. I didn’t think of that! Certainly could be. Reserves is another option but I don’t think so (only my opinion!) in this case. The Armed Forces really likes to big up what Reservists are capable of (and rightly so) but this rôle is so specific that I believe he’s a Regular. Particularly with all the overseas exercises throughout the year. I’m surprised they haven’t made him a “Local” or “Acting” Sergeant. Anyway, really interesting to see these old Soviet vehicles in use with NATO! Ian

Ukrainian S-300 variants are ancient, also Tor-M1 is also quite old, and Ukraine only captured one Pantsir S1 which is also outdated by now, considering it was not modernized as some sources claim. Also, the US actually bought S-300 plans in 90's and already bought a batter from Ukraine few years back.

Note: As the guy says ….very robust to drive….that’s a Russian strength ….kit built very strongly. The western kit seems to be too complex and breaks down often! Note: This very old kit can still work, so while it still works it’s very non representative of what Russia has today. This isn’t a Tor equivalent nor even close. That means the blue team get a false sense of security. No NATO planes will survive for long in Ukraines dense air defence environment and most will be just cannon fodder.
