Let's all relfect that when this song came out in 1984, we could NEVER imagine: 1. His freedom as a living man. 2. He BECAME the President of S. Africa. 3. The end of apartheid. Incredible human being. Power of the mind and its thought to shape a new reality.

Well said. Amazing song. Amazing man ( Mandela) and symbol of the fight against oppression everywhere. Desmond Tutu said those who do not oppose injustice condone it. Too true in every walk of life.

in New Zealand, we didnt know who Mandella even was when this song came out. But after this song came out, New Zealand became probably the worlds most violent critic of apartheid. This country went absolutely ape-shit mental in the rugby tours when they figured out what was going on in South Africa. God bless The Specials.

I’m a Cov kid, my wife is South African, born a few km from Soweto. She’d never heard this song until after she moved to Cov and I played it to her, due to the banning of it by the apartheid regime there in the 80s. It shows you the true power of music.

The link between Coventry and Soweto is magnificent. I am reading Too Much Too Young by Daniel Rachel at the moment, about the history of Two Tone. Jerry Dammers comes across very well in the book; principled, idealistic and visionary. I knew there was a lot of money sloshing around in the music industry but I am still shocked by the reference to a cheque left lying around in his house for £650,000 which was just for royalties from Japan for Ghost Town. One relatively small country. I know Japan loves its music but just one country! I went to university in Leicester in the late 1980s but I have never visited Coventry. The book makes me want to visit the museum of music which I think it just outside the city centre. Love the fact you subscribe to Novara, Owen Jones, and Burniston! It is hilarious. Me and my wife love it.

I'm from about 5 miles away from Coventry this was my era, what happened? This was a great time nobody saw colour! Everyone danced together this saddens me! 😒

Singers name is Stan Campbell. Knew him from queen's Road baptist Church Coventry back in the early 70s. Brilliant times. Brilliant song. Xx

Rest in Peace Terry, most respected Specials frontman. Massive respects to Mr. Stan Campbell too, the man leading this song. A timeless classic but more importantly I think, a social statement which played a part in ending the world's tolerance of apartheid and brought about wonderful change for us all on this planet. Lastly, rest in peace Mr President, Nelson Madiba Mandela, you changed the world Sir. Thank you.

This is powerful i remember when this came out here in Aotearoa New Zealand we were having riots here trying to stop the spring boks rugby team touring here in solidarity for our black and colored brothers and sisters in south Africa

Terry Hall and his musicians, this dancers dancers, his compositions and arrangements wer SPECIAL ! This piece of music let's you sit still: you just gotta go with the rhythm AND listen to the words, the trumpet, the percussion.... SPECIAL indeed !

Terry Hall wasn’t involved with this variation of The Specials. Jerry Dammers (original keyboard player and principal song writer for The Specials) wrote the song. Still , a great loss to the music world. R.I.P. Terry😢

What a powerful song , remember hearingbthis song in a mates house, like me he loved the specials/AKA Specials And we didn't know the name of this lead singer, but he could belt out his notes.. This was a defining time for music the country was in turmoil riots, unemployment was at record levels .but the ska/reggae bought black and white together ,no hatred just being respectful, mixing with each other and listening to the sounds of two tone..

After a partial break-up in 1981, The Specials re-grouped with a substantially different lineup as "The Special AKA" from 1982 to 1985. Not to be confused with "The Special A.K.A.", that The Specials used on on some releases in their early career - Members: Egidio Newton, Gary McManus, Horace Panter, Jerry Dammers, John Bradbury, John Shipley, Rhoda Dakar, Stan Campbell.
