Two points stood out to me: 1. Focus on present 2. Compare the impact of a decluttered home vs the impact of potentially missing any singular item in future.

I’m ready to do a speedy declutter thanks to this video! I also want to thank you for your signature sign off of “Thank you for spending this little bit of time with me.” It’s so warm and genuine! I’ve adopted thanking my children for sharing time with me when we talk or videochat. They all live I’m different states, and I miss them. This makes connecting with them feel even more special! You inspire me!

I love how you make the point that you absolutely might regret getting rid of something, but the greater good is so much more valuable. Sometimes I delay decluttering because I want to do it "perfectly" (where I keep everything I should, and get rid of everything I should), and that's just not going to happen. If something is worth doing, it's worth doing badly - GK Chesterton.

Been decluttering the pst few days. There's been so much stuff I was able to get out of my space. Gives so much peace, so much freedom. I did it just like you said in this video and yes! Sometimes you need to force yourself to declutter fast. Very nice video of you!

I’m in the process of trying to declutter everything, and I seem to get stuck, so I’m definitely going to try out these tips! I have the hardest time decluttering books (I’m a reader who rereads books so I have a ton of them), so a speedy declutter might be the answer!

Awesome! yeah try it out and see -- if you do it I'd be interested to hear how it goes! Books (especially if you're a big reader) can be a toughy!

I second think decluttering. I cannot afford to not try to get money from something but selling stuff isn't so simple. People don't seem to want my stuff. I think of my belongings before acquiring anything. I only get what I need. Sometimes other people bring me stuff that isn't always useful or asked for. They mean well but it's not helping.

I need some advice from my fellow minimalists… I can’t seem to let go of some of my kids items even through they they me they don’t want them. They are now young adults. I have eliminated a lot but need to get into the right head space and can’t seem to do it.

Don't pressure yourself to get rid of every sentimental item. Maybe these items mean a lot to you right now. There is no shame in keeping something, you just can't keep everything. How many of these items do you have? Is there a place in your home where you can display these items? If not, do you have a memory bin where you can put them? I like the concept of a memory bin because it puts a limit to the stuff you can keep for sentimental reasons. I say this as a rather hardcore minimalists who needs 25 boxes and two suitcases to pack up her whole home. I have sentimental items as well, and I don't pressure myself anymore to let them go. I noticed that some items lose their sentimental value overtime. What has meaning to me right now might not be important to me in five years. Perhaps your children just moved out recently or you just retired (or are about to) and your mind is processing how your life will look like now. Maybe you mourn getting older or having an empty nest. If you have a lot of items from your kids (more than about 20), try to remove about 10%. Try to look at the stuff objectively. What are the least sentimental items for you? Is the item broken or worn out and belongs into the trash? Would someone still use it? Find good homes for the items that are still in good condition. Perhaps a friend of yours has grandkids who would love to play with these toys? Perhaps there is a single parent in your community that would be thankful if you gave this item to her? If all this doesn't help, take a break and move to another area to declutter. Letting go takes time. Show yourself grace and be gentle to yourself. Perhaps it's not the time yet to let these items go.

@@Conval-wi5eh - what a thoughtful answer. You are correct. My kids are in their 20’s and I miss the younger years. I am still working but could retire. Also, mom mom died recently and I have a lot of her items. I can see items change over time. I love the 10 percent idea. I am taking it slow and have been eliminating over the past two years. I can tell some of my mom’s items are more meaningful and others not as much. I am spending time with my kids going though some of their items with them. I have one bin for the meaningful items…. Thank you again for your thoughtful answer.

@@thebarky1988 I am so sorry for your loss. I actually wanted to write "Maybe you have recently lost someone", but that felt like too much and I didn't want to assume something. Hearing that you actually lost someone, and that this someone was your mother of all things, let my heart sink. Give yourself time and space to mourn. This is a tough situation you are in. I am still in my twenties and I used to live with a lady who just turned 60. She went through her own decluttering journey and seeing her process opened my eyes to something: It's so much easier to declutter when you are 20, just left your parents' home and have your whole live ahead of you then when you are in the autumn of your life. Some doors have shut forever and special times are long gone and over. It is definitely NOT easy to process and come to terms with this. Take it slow, give yourself grace. I am glad the 10% idea has inspired you. Go on and part from the things that probably didn't mean a lot to your mother. Then you can tackle the harder stuff, one day at a time, one item at a time. Hugs ❤

I have big regrets from things I had gotten rid of quickly. For years now…. I only wish I had slowed down and thought things through…For example: I got rid of my doll that had been so special to me growing up. I had gotten married and we didn’t have children at the time but t wanted to save the doll for my little girl. But I gave it away and later had two children. How I have longed and wished that I had kept that doll for my daughter and now I have a granddaughter that might have enjoyed it. Another example: my plaid garden jacket… I thought I had enough which I did… but didn’t think it through. I didn’t want to wear my better jackets in the muddy vegetable garden. I even went looking for it forgetting at first that I had gotten rid of it. It was such a perfect garden jacket that I loved. Anyway, I don’t make good decisions when I just do it in the moment. Maybe some people do, but I need to analyze so I don’t mess up.

@margarethawk3073 I think the hoarders amongst us feel this way. I still regret letting go of certain things going back decades, even though intellectually I know it's a bit silly. For example, I even regret throwing away a certain plastic bag. Yes, really! (It was heavily imbued with fantastic childhood memories. I wish I still had it). My strategy now is to wait until I'm "good and ready" before I let something go. If I'm not sure, I just keep it. I really appreciate decluttering videos, but I always bear in mind what is right for me.

I know it’s not much consolation but l kept dolls and gave them to my daughter and she commented they were ugly and looked sad. She never played with them. Everyone is different.
