Many thanks Lyn for a tour of your beautiful spiny cacti. Actually slightly timely for me, I love the look of spiny cacti but after repotting my Opuntia Santa Rita and Opuntia Humifusa seedlings last night I think I might need to change my preferences - they are only 5-7cm tall but the lower pads have grown some absolutely evil spines on them, and I left my cactus tongs outside and couldn't be bothered to get them - that was a mistake! After the recent thefts from the front of my house Ziggy suggested I should build a fence of Opuntia Stricta to protect them, but I think O. Santa Rita seedlings might be even better!!! Wishing you and Hans a lovely Tuesday evening and Wednesday from gloomy northern Spain! 🙂🌵💚

Wow, your plants look great! 👍 Time 03:00 - It looks like something close to Echinopsis/Trichocereus tacaquirensis. They can get very tall. I haven't been able to collect any fruit on ours for several years, for some reason. I just went out and measured the longer spines on some giant Neoraimondia = 16cm or about 6.5 inches. That would (potentially) go through your arm and come out the other side twice!

I have seen tricho cuzocensis with huge spines. I have a little one which is crossed with a cuzocensis and it's got a few fairly long spines but the genuine type is up to 25cm long spines! The other one I have that is a whole mess of interlocked spines is nipple beehive cactus, I forget the botanical name but it is common in the chihuahua desert of Mexico. The flowers are stunning, pink stripe down the middle of a white petal. We have jumping cactus as a major pests here which have dead birds in them. andeves needle is a pest too. I have about 6 eve needle cacti from cuttings from a giant roadside one.

Have a look at frailea phaeodisca. It's black spines that lay flat to the cacti but they're in like a fern leaf arrangement. They are tiny, about 2cm across after 3 years. There's frailea asterioides which is a messier looking one with the spines raised. And then there's one in the same family called graphilea. I have decent numbers and tons of seeds of each. Never that cheap but I got a bunch around Christmas and new years when I was the sole bidder on an ebayer here who sells about 25 different cacti a week. I cleaned up while I could.

@desertplantsofavalon
@desertplantsofavalon Ай бұрын
Hi Monica :-D yes I have 3 Eves needles Cacti, I find that my Eves needles seem to like a lot more frequent watering in summer than my other Cacti otherwise they shrivel quite fast and often drop spines, the good news is with more regular watering your Eves needles should recover well, give them plenty of sunshine and a good watering every time the soil has dried out during the spring and summer months, the young spines start off green and fleshy but naturally drop off as they mature as the green spines are modified leaves that appear before the true spines show, once the green leaved spines drop off the true spines will grow, thanks so much Monica for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to NJ for a terrific Tuesday XXXX

EVE'S NEEDLES: THAT'S IT! I'm about to toss my Eve's Needles. I've gotta figure out how to send a pic to see if it's dead or worthy of my continual worries, as I know it at least requires repotting & fresh, magical soil. It's just recovering from nasty gnat fungus, which has been treated with MOSQUITO BITS & still is. I'm bed-bound so must wait for friend to come help repot. This plant keeps sprouting babies from the base like I can't believe & I've not seen that in any other pics. This leaves me thinking it's not dead! But it's hideous & the spines are still off. At the end of your reply, you wrote how the green spines shed & new ones are NEEDLES. But all the pics I've seen of mature big ones are like mine were--green, pointed rubbery looking non-invasive "needles." When healthy, these plants look like harmless pointy FAKE RUBBER. Right? The name is total bs. This poor thing lives in the grossest state in all the US... New Jersey. It's LUCKY to be indoors. I brushed all the dead brown needles off, but it looks like the same are returning. Maybe it's ROOT ROT? OMG. Shut me up. Monica You need the pic!
