We hear so much about these machines and know their names almost like rote from history classes and lectures about the industrial revolution, and have an abstract idea about what they did, but it's so much more helpful to actually see the labor they saved and how they operated. Thanks for recording and sharing this!

My ancestors invented Shoddy in 1813 which provided tens of thousands of jobs in Batley, Birstall and Dewsbury. I am planning to build a hand loom.

Thank you for posting this. It does a great job demonstrating the early machines of the Industrial Revolution. Too bad all those folks were making so much in the background.

I have a question regarding the spinning jenny and I'd be very thankful if someone were to answer it. :D In any demonstration of people using the spinning jenny, the yarn they're using is already spun. It's not pure wool/ cotton but already a string which means it had to processed once before. So my question is: What good is the spinning jenny if you need already spun yarn in order to use it? Seems like an unnecessary step to me, why not just stick to spinning wheel then? Or is it merely something to improve the quality of already spun yarn? (If I have phrased my question in a bad way, or you're unable to understand, please let me know)

It spins it finer and more evenly. It’s a process to get a better quality fibre to weave i suppose.

@@AbisDen Okay, then the already spun yarn makes perfect sense if it's for refinement. I understand now. Thank you for taking the time to answer.

Although it looks like it is yarn that is being spun, it is actually pencil roving or cotton sliver. The first term is usually wool, the second is for cotton. This is a thin strip of predrafted fiber.

I couldn't hear what he was saying and the subtitles were sketchy! However, I did understand what he was doing. I have two weaving looms, one table loom and the other is a floor loom, both 8 shaft, and love throwing the shuttle watching the cloth emerge. I love that flying shuttle! Very ingenious. I also have two spinning wheels though I will be selling one as I don't use it as much as my new one. It is a wonderful hobby. They aren't walking wheels like the one in the video, they have treadles and I love the process from fleece to fabric or knitting yarn. It gives such a good sense of achievement but it is a lot of work. I would love to go to Quarry Bank but it would be a bit of a jaunt from Devon!

Treadles will be much easier to work at, especially if it was your main source of living. QB is a beautiful place, a whole village really. the workers were taken care of, despite odd digits being chopped off here and there, but homes were provided, so was education and a church. The Mill is now beautifully kept and I’d highly recommend this place to anyone visit the area. I’m sorry about the poor video. I have the opportunity to take better video now that I’ve volunteered to help there.

@@AbisDen Oh what a wonderful place to volunteer! I wish we had something like that down here. There was once but interest seemed to wane and costs went up and that was that. How hard those weavers worked. I don't suppose they had the same support as in places like Quarry Bank though, even there, working conditions would seem very harsh to us today. Yes, I love treadling on my floor loom but I have to concentrate. One wrong treadle and the patterns is spoiled though I tell everyone it was a design feature!! I don't think they are convinced. The video was fine, it was just the sound. I am profoundly deaf but rely on the subtitles which I doubt you have any control over. Also, if it is a man speaking I turn the volume right up and I am able to pick out what is being said by lip reading and what little sound I can hear. There is one place in Someret where they weave horse hair which makes a wonderful strong fabric only good for upholstery. Went there a few years ago with my guild. It was incredibly noisy!

The audio quality is horrendous. There are too many bratty children running around who should be put to work in a factory for a few weeks to calm them down.
