Our Newest Lecture Series:
Demonology: Understanding & Winning the Spiritual Battle
The study of the Church’s demonology is a part of basic catechism and Christian instruction. The Scriptures are replete with teaching on the dark powers. Additionally, it is impossible to appreciate the magnitude of the saving deeds of our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, without understanding how He, and He alone, has conquered Satan and destroyed his works. Lastly, Christians are called to fight and win in the spiritual war, and for this reason, it is essential that believers understand their enemies and their tactics. Toward this end, Father Josiah presents in these lectures in-depth studies of the Scriptures, Divine Services, and pedagogy of great saints and teachers on the subject of Satan and spiritual battle.
Lecture titles include:
Lecture #1 Jesus and Satan
Lecture #2 Demonology in the Baptismal Rite and the Divine Liturgy
Lecture #3 Gaining Mastery of Satan: The Life of St. Anthony the Great
Lecture #4 How to Win the Spiritual Battle according to St. John of the Ladder
Lecture #5 Engaging the Unseen Warfare: Fr. Lorenzo Scupoli and St. Nicodemos of the Holy Mountain
Lecture #6 C. S. Lewis’ Screwtape Letters and Demonic Warfare in the 21st Century Falling West

Those dark-hearted "nuns" prove that even Christians can be Pharisees at heart. No person is immune to pride, and we all have to be on guard against it.

Very powerful-- thank you! Please consider doing a reflection regarding an Orthodox reflection on Israel and the current situation. I am a convert to the Ancient Faith (2006) and I am grieved to see some Orthodox people in leadership positions celebrating Hamas. It appears that some calling themselves Orthodox Christians serve ethnicity over Jesus Christ.

Sadly, some nuns try to protect themselves from the sinful world, but in the process deny the love and compassion that should have drawn them there.

True sport father is god himself. Read Isaiah chapter 63 v 16. In tnis verse especially Abraham was father and Israel ( jacob) we're Israel founding fathers, but the true founder is their own God. Deutronomy chapter 6 v 4.

Something is not right. So God loves me the more I sin first? This sounds a lot like Protestant teachings. I’m forgiven all my sins, so let’s party. I’m not here to argue, but by today’s standards that harlot is just about every woman in the west. Who is responsible for the nuns? Just ask yourself under whose guidance the nuns were. Yes God loves everyone, but you won’t cut the line by being the bigger sinner.

I come from a Protestant background and I didn't come away with that conclusion from what Fr. Josiah was saying. (Now Orthodox) I think he is just explaining the compassion we should have on others. Should we not be moved by their pain and want to see them healed of what really is hurting them- sin? I think what he is getting to teach is the idea - We must let God judge and not give the condemnation ourselves . I think you are correct in that their are times we need to stand firmly against sin too. But it sounds like what the nuns did was very cruel and not motivated by love but hate (according to the perspective that Fr. Josiah shared)

Father Josiah was not just drawing a conclusion with self-made theology, he was citing scripture (Romans 5:20). The problem is not the statement of Saint Paul, that: "where sin abounded, grace did much more abound", the problem is in your interpretation. First of all, grace and love are not the same thing. Grace is all that God gives. Every moment we live, every breath we take, is God's Grace. Love is the reason that He gives us His Grace. When He bestows more Grace upon someone, it is not due to a greater love, it is because that person is more receptive. To give a poor analogy: The bigger the hole, the more water it can receive. Another way you could look at it: The more damaged someone is, the more care they need in order to be restored. This verse is not speaking about Grace as a reward for sin, it is speaking about the way in which God is mightier than sin. You intepreted the verse as glorifying sin, but it was actually meant to humiliate sin, whilst glorifying God's Grace, which overpowers it.

Even if Fr. Josiah said something like that, it can be seen through the Orthodox lenses. We can say: yes, we must become greater sinners - BUT NOT in the sense you are putting it. We shall not drive to commit more sins, but to see more and more clearly our own sins... even so that we can say from the sincere heart, _"I believe, O Lord, and I confess that Thou art truly the Christ, the Son of the Living God, Who camest into the world to save _*_sinners, of whom I am first"._* I truly pray that I could see myself as the first of all sinners some day... my heart would be broken but finally alive. The greater our sins are in our own eyes, the more we strive to repent, and the more we repent the more God has mercy on us because He pours out His mercy according to our willing and readiness to receive it.
