With Spongebob episodes basically having a commonly accepted ranking now, some episodes are getting unfairly judged. This is one of them. Let’s find out why this pseudo finale deserves more love.

I think Bubble Buddy, I'm With Stupid, Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy IV, Doing Time, and the endings of Squid on Strike, Sandy, Spongebob and the Worm and Pranks a Lot are a lot worse than this. You do not know how grateful I am that Spongebob Squarepants did not end on the episode Pranks a Lot before The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie's premiere. I guarantee you, Avatar: The Last Airbender's three seasons would have outclassed Spongebob's three seasons in every way, had Nickelodeon not decided to continue making more seasons the month before The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie's premiere.

The thing that you said about "how youtubers change opinions on episodes" is very true. Like look at Breath of Fresh Squidward, at one point was often considered one of the best episodes of Season 5 and then when Mr. Enter, PieGuyRulez, Jem Reviews or PhantomStrider done their review on it, people started calling it one of the worst Season 5 episodes

I wasn't aware that this episode is unpopular - maybe because I barely watch other animation reviewers. I always liked this episode: the Patchy segment is pretty much the best in the entire show, and the writing is, as you demonstrated, clever (even though the plotline might be atypical for Spongebob). I mean, this is still pre-movie Spongebob, which is god tier at it's best and perfectly enjoyable at it's worst.

I like your hypothesis on what the episode means, but I think I can do you one better: This wasn't just an allegory for fame, it was an allegory for the risks that Stephen Hillenberg himself had to go through. Think about it: SpongeBob could be representing Hillenberg when developing and trying to pitch the show, and the Bikini Bottomites are Nickelodeon, saying that the concept is way too bizarre to be a hit on the channel. When SpongeBob flies, it represents everyone at Nick and the general public loving the show, so Nick starts sucking up to Hillenberg. When the Bikini Bottomites start taking advantage of SpongeBob's fame, it represents the cooperate meddling from Nick to try and extend the show longer than it should, which is what leads to Hillenberg leaving the show, represented by SpongeBob giving up on his dream and realizing all he really needs is friendship. So, in a way, Hillenberg decided to end SpongeBob off on an episode that tells a story that's personal to him, as it represents the history of the show itself. On a related note, I used to want SpongeBob SquarePants to run forever. Now that I'm almost 21, even I'm starting to think it should've ended with 3 seasons. While the movie provides closure for the characters, "The Sponge Who Could Fly" was specifically made to provide closure for Hillenberg and the franchise as a whole. If you ask me, if Nick was going to end this show now, "SpongeBob's Birthday Blowout" should've been the last episode and "Sponge on the Run" as the Grand Finale.

Your wish came true, and this is the timeline in which SpongeBob SquarePants was not dwarfed by Avatar: the Last Airbender telling much grander stories and character development in exactly 60 episodes and 3 seasons, the same as what SpongeBob SquarePants had before the movie. Are you still grateful we got episodes like Perfect Chemisty, Sportz, Surf n Turf and other episodes that have plots pairing some unusual combinations of Spongebob characters who did not have major storylines like these in the first three seasons? Did you like seeing Sandy get those three episodes where she is up against other main characters who wronged Spongebob? _Or would you prefer it if Avatar: The Last Airbender's 60 episodes outclassed Spongebob's 60 episodes in every way when Avatar: the Last Airbender was created as a more serious, less episodic show than Spongebob Squarepants?_ I will not deny that many of the Spongebob's worst episodes come after the first movie, but that still does not mean that the post-movie seasons are worth nothing if you saw Admirable Animations #25! I like it when a long-running cartoon property finds more things to do and newer stories to tell with its characters without ruining them and bending them out-of-character. _If SpongeBob SquarePants just stopped at 60 episodes and a movie, it would never make it to 9 seasons and 3 movies like Rugrats did._ Now it has 13 seasons! The first movie does not really provide closure for every character because Sandy, Mrs. Puff and Pearl were all sidelined, and Squidward, Mr. Krabs and Gary only have a handful of more scenes. I always loved Sponge Out of Water for having a plot with all six main characters given a main part, and the first half of the story taking place in the show's normal settings before traveling to the far future and then out of water in the second half. It gave Sponge Out of Water more variety in its story than being another road trip movie. It tells a much longer story that can fully embrace the unique concepts of the main characters traveling through time in SB-129, leaving the ocean in Pressure, and becoming superheroes in Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy V, and *does more with them.* The best part of Sponge Out of Water is, it does not feel like the end even when it could be. I do not want everything SpongeBob SquarePants to come after 2004 to be lost to time, and you should think about all of the new positive experiences some episodes from the later seasons have given you that you would never have if it ended with 3 seasons and did nothing with Sandy Cheeks and Sheldon Plankton both being scientists with different goals.

You know why people start twisting their views to reflect other people's like the cartoon community reviewers instead of forming their own opinions based on their experiences and facts they gathered from the source? It's because most of the time they present themselves in a way that make them look as if they're holier-than-thou compared to the big bad corporate suits. And because of that, more often than not, they give people the mentality that because they're the independent little guys they can be the saviors of the animation industry, who can do little to no wrong, who will show all the big conglomerates who's boss. But they become so popular that they take their opinions to the extreme, taking them too seriously, and ending up getting other people hurt because of it, just look at "hive minds" formed in certain fandom cultures that revolt against anyone who DARES to defy with different opinions no matter how valid their points are, or hell the time that Mr. Enter directed his audience to harass and send death threats to SpongeBob writers just because they wrote a bad episode of SpongeBob. Of could you can blame people like Doug Walker for being the worst influence for the "angry reviewer" style and the outcomes of its influence onto other people infecting the cartoon community but it might not be the case for how all these reviewers started out. It's very, very toxic and only makes the community (or communities) surrounding these shows look bad if not worse than the conglomerates they're fighting against. Also by for some odd reason more often than not the most popular originated from the Brony community.

I'll eliminate the one "Um actually" right now. "But Pranks a Lot was the last episode!" Yes... That was the last episode produced and aired for Season 3, but that doesn't mean anyone INTENDED for it to be the finale. As much as networks may air episodes out of order, studios may also PRODUCE episodes out of order, especially when it comes to finales where they know they're gonna blow the budget and decide it's easier to just plan filler episodes around whatever money they have left AFTER the finale.

One memory I have of this episode that still stands out from when it was still a fresh episode is that it's probably the only episode of the show my Grandma liked (at least to my knowledge.) Here's the thing: my Grandma *HATED* Spongebob. She thought it was stupid crap that she had no idea as to why me, my sister or any of the other kids loved it so much. Yet she had no objections to Ren & Stimpy. Funny how that works. Then she watched this episode with me, my sister and a neighbor kid in her kitchen and I remembered her saying it was a pretty sweet episode. This made someone who regularly hated Spongebob actually praise it. Think about that.

The Sponge Who Could Fly was one of my favorite episodes of Spongebob, it hit just about every joke, song, and even just the lines themselves perfectly. One of the ways you can see if an episode is good, is how much of it is memorable. And just about all of The Sponge Who Could Fly is, with 2/3 of the episode now ingrained in my head. I never really got why people hated the episode, besides for the angry townsfolk. I'm really glad to see an episode that gets into this, and actually shows the other side of things.

I also feel like The Sponge Who Could Fly’s story could be seen as a commentary on that one specific trope in kids media like Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer or Gerald McBoing-Boing, where the character is an outsider/outcast who everyone makes fun of for their weird quirk. But when that character’s quirk becomes useful, everyone lavishes the main character with praise and act like they were on their side the whole time. It’s kind of a messed up moral when you actually think about it; you will be shunned and treated as an outcast for how you deviate from the norm unless it can be exploited or be “useful”. It makes you wonder what would happen if Rudolph’s nose stoped glowing or Mc Boing-Boing became mute. Would society still care about them, or would society just go back to treating them both as freaks or burdens, only caring about the their useful gifts rather then them as people? Spongebob if you noticed, goes through a similar arc to Rudolph and Gerald at the beginning of the episode; he has a crazy idea to fly with the jellyfish and for it he get teased snd mocked by the townsfolk. But when he inflates his pants and starts to fly for real, suddenly they all become his fans. If this were a lesser episode, the writers could’ve easily end it there and had the ‘happy’ ending, but then we see how the townsfolk use spongebob and his flying for their own ends. And ultimately when Spongebob’s pants blow up, none of the townspeople care about spongebob himself and only about the gift of his they could exploit. It’s such an interesting subversion of this type of “outcast becomes useful with their weird quirk” plot that I just find fascinating...

I actually liked this episode wuen i first saw it. The songs stuck true to me and i was heavily invested in SpongeBob's goal to fly. It was nice seeing him succeed, not so nice to see everyone turn on him when he stopped giving them what they wanted but great when the jellyfish picked him up after his fall from grace. It's amazing that some people would trade their friendships for a shot at the big time because they fail to realise that fans don't necessarily mean friends. They see artists for their art rather than the person behind the art. That's why if I become famous, it'll be a later part of my life when I've got a network of stable relationships and something to cushion my fall if the floor gives way.

The ending is okay, but there’s some parts about the opening BEFORE the episode started that scare me because I have autism. It didn't as a kid because I didn’t quite understand a few things back then. I really hated how those fish mistreat a sweet sponge who just wanted to fly with his jellyfish friends, but they take advantage of his kindness because they putted themselves first and obsess over the pants. The jellyfish were so sweet for what they did in the end. Except for the Patchy beginning, this episode is the best!

I may be a Sonic fan, but I'm not THAT type; the type that only cares about what the character does rather than who they are. What's even crazier is that the way people act towards the Movie Sonic design before vs after is much like what you're talking about. They didn't care about the story, heck the parts that actually mattered to the plot were cut because of them, because they didn't want the story, they want the out-of-place design that didn't fit into the movie's aesthetic, which was hypocritical when you look at how they reacted to Sonic 06 for doing the same thing.

Very well said. I've always liked this episode since I saw it. For starters, it includes my favorite appearance of Patchy ever, though he was very memorable in Friend Or Foe as well. Just about everything in those sequences from this episode is really entertainingly over the top, and honestly, I prefer the Patchy segments over the actual SpongeBob content from the episode, though The Sponge Who Could Fly is memorable as well. While I understand why some fans dislike how the story is portrayed, I was fine with it, and the songs worked as well. There's only a few things that keep it from being somewhat better in my opinion. First of all, with the way this is framed as a final episode of sorts, though it clearly isn't due to the show still going, it's unfortunate that Sandy doesn't appear at all. Even if it was just a brief moment of SpongeBob helping her by his own choice, it would make more sense that her being completely absent. I also wasn't a fan of the tape being ruined at the end, though it appears as if it was all recorded by the broadcast. And finally, this really should have been the final episode of season 3, not SpongeBob Meets The Strangler/Pranks A Lot, since The Sponge Who Could Fly makes so much more sense for that position. Overall, I really like the episode, and I don't want to be influenced by the popular opinion like with many other things.

All the favors asked for in this episode are some of the absolute dumbest favors I've ever heard, but I'm sure a simple "sorry I can't, I've got something I have to do" could have gotten him to Jellyfish Fields no problem

Could I please get your context over the "Andrew Johnson is a bad president" meme you use? I mean he is a bad president, but why pick that bad president for the meme

I actually think the reason why people hate this episode, aside from being disappointing as a special, is the fact that it could interpreted as the beginning of the end for Spongebob. Sure its the last episode of the original run, but certain episodes of the “dark” era of Spongebob(which is what I’m calling episodes seasons 4 to mid-season 9) seems to leech off of its mean-spirited tone and ends up making this more like a start for when the townspeople take a turn for the worst in episodes like Wigstruck, Little Yellow Book or Someone’s in the Kitchen with Sandy, rather than a challenge for the tone of the series. I honestly used to HATE this episode when I first saw it, but that was also when I was getting aggravated with the current episodes at the time, so I feel I would probably appreciate it more if it was a standalone episode with this tone to make you think about the series as a whole.

Wait, The Sponge Who Could Fly was meant to be Spongebob's final episode? I thought that was Spongebob Meets the Strangler/Pranks a Lot! SpongeBob SquarePants is still going on not because of a Horcrux, but because Spongebob's audience was much too big and strong and loyal to be done with it after 3 seasons and a movie. They knew there was much more to be done with Spongebob characters who never had any episodes together before the movie!

So Stephen Hillenburg was conveying that he wanted to end SpongeBob, because he had other dreams and was now hoping to pursue them? Interesting take

Well he did want to end it after the movie but it was too much of a money maker so he became hands off and Paul Tibbitt was in charge for seasons 4-9. Now Vincent Waller and marc Ceccarelli are in charge.

I did enjoy this episode but my problem was the bakini bottom townsfolk before and after spongebob was able to fly and the old man because they were so hateful and hypocrites

The weakest episode is "Leaf Blowers" (idk what it's called) the silent one, for good reason silent, but it still lacked some of the charm and humor provided by the dialogue.
