When it comes to barnacles in spongebob, i have a theory that the writers use these to expose a larger issue in the show and society itself.

Barnacles aren't parasites but that doesn't benefit the host. Plus, it's very common on whales and some other marine animals with barnacles that have ridden on them to find food and they weren't bothered. This is called commensalism, it's a type of symbiotic relationship where an organism benefits itself with a host that is unaffected by it.

barnacles can harm the host, like with lobsters where barnacles can limit their movement, and with whales they can host barnacle mites which feed off of the whale's blood (though thats not necessarily the barnacle's harm, but theyre still indirectly causing it) regardless this theory stinks
