I believe that 108 is a particular number in buddhism, a religion which heavily shaped and influenced Japanese culture. Buddhism has the 108 temptations (kleshas), to overcome to reach nirvana. 6 senses (including taste, touch, sight, hearing, scent and consciousness), multiplied by 3 for the past, present and future, multiplied by 2 for association to pleasure or not and all... So my belief is that Spiritomb is linked to kleshas.
