Today, we're going to take a look at a little tiny knife, with a whole lot of charm, the Spyderco and Jonathan McNees 'McBee', based on the 'Killer B'.

It's extremely rare that Nick calls a knife too small. Today is a special day.

I’m a massive man/ladybug fan, and I agree 100% they offer a considerably higher value for dollar. That said, there is a specialness here that is missing from those blades. This is a real treat for small knife fans, and one that I’ve been waiting for. It’s got features and build quality you normally only find on big pieces. Price-per-inch wise, it’s actually fairly in line with similar quality knives, so value in that sense is on point. Put a gorgeous KME edge on this thing and it just sings. It’s special. It’s not for everyone, but for those people who it’s aimed at it’s very, very, hard to beat.

"And here's my titanium sellotape slicer, purchased mainly because I have too much money. No, I'm sorry, I can't cut an onion with it but thanks to the super-steel blade and rock-solid construction I can baton literally a million wooden lolly sticks before it needs resharpening."

You hit the nail on the head with every point. I carry this and the PM3 maxamet everyday, and I have to do a 360 spin before taking out my PM3 because like you said, it makes people very uncomfortable. The McBee does 90% of the opening and cutting tape / plastic, and the PM3 - for padded cartons and furniture boxes. I carry the McBee with a spyderco lanyard that gives you additional grip as a handle and a fast way to deploy the knife. It is very women friendly, it's smaller than their knives, but they are absolutely terrified by the paramilitary 3.

This is one of my travel knives. One of the great things about it for me is that it's a premium, really well constructed piece that is small enough that I can legally carry it in Japan. The knife laws there are EXTREMELY strict (blade must be under 5.5cm/2.16in) and having something with this level of fit and finish is nice when I can't bring my larger pieces.

Just got back from a trip to Greenland installing server hardware. Brought my new McBee with me and it broke down 4 pallets worth of cardboard, cutting it all up in to pieces small enough to fit in a very small dumpster. Most of it was over 1/4" thick. Over $100 for a glorified box cutter? Not for everybody. But I constantly travel for work and nobody bats an eye at this thing and I know the steel won't have me needing to sharpen I'm the middle of a trip or running out to find blades for a box cutter.

It's kinda like the Spyderco Chubby for me. It's not really the best at anything, it's not the best value (especially now, since the Chubby is discontinued). But I absolutely love the way it looks, and it makes me happy every time I use it. So despite all of its shortcomings, the Chubby is my favorite Spyderco, and is in my watch pocket almost everyday. Keep up the good work Nick! I'd love to see a review of the Chubby on the channel someday!

@Fuzz1994tps4 жыл бұрын
I like it a lot. In an office type environment or going somewhere nice like a formal occasion high end restaurant where people dress up, I am not worried about bringing this out aesthetically speaking or scaring people size wise. I cannot say the same about the Yojimbo. It is also much cheaper than a Chris Reeve knife of similar size with a comparable quality.

@@Fuzz1994tps I would rather buy a simple Victorinox for way less money and save this money for a yojimbo 2 , but hey , that's my opinion.

I wish it was a little cheaper, but I love this knife. I love tiny knives. For some reason I get a lot more fun out of them. They make me laugh and they make everyone I show smile and laugh. Every person that I've shown this knife, and almost all of my tiny knives, wants to play with it. I pre ordered this knife knowing that I would love it. I was right. Again, I wish that it was cheaper because I would've bought more than 1.

Good review. Adding a lanyard, with a bead could provide more to hold onto, as mentioned in a previous comment. That lanyard hole looks pretty small though. 550 cord? 450 cord? Leather? hmmmm. I like this knife but I can’t help imagining a slightly bigger version. I would be all over it.

Nice review, as expectedl. At 1.7 oz, the McBee is in Benchmade Mini-Bugout weight territory (with a "real" 2.8in blade, albeit with Grivory... ugh. Flytanium scales!). Obviously these are very different sizes, but if you are aiming for light weight, both can be carried IN your pocket without feeling weighty. In another direction, the TPT Slide offers a lot more utility in about the same size and similar slicing ability at half the price. See also Gil-Tek RUK, maybe McArmy EK16. Nick got it right... McBee is a "fun" knife, not one that caused me to part with my $$ (appreciate the review in that regard). Spyderco Pochi is silly/cutesy. Agree the Slyz Techno 2 may be a better, but pricier, choice (but 3.4oz!). Then, see lightweight gems like the Boos Smoke Mini, and HMC Knives Transient Micro (Shabazz reviews exist). Or ZT0022 Galyean.

@reds7vn6444 жыл бұрын
Hell NO! The wire clip just screams cheapness . Spyderco exclamation great knives that they ruin with a wire clip. If you can go in and change the clip on this knife, it should be a milled clip. The truth of the matter is I don't carry this knife with a pocket clip. Per se to clip it onto my pocket and I just drop it in my pocket. This knife really does need the pocket clip for solid one-handed opening.
@ryanfreedman52643 жыл бұрын
Nick, Not sure if you'll see this three years later, but is the hardware titanium? I can't quite tell from the video, but I was debating doing some anodizing work on the scales, so I thought I'd try and do the screws too

Spydercos MSRP for the McBee is $200 and the street price $130 I own one and it's the nicest knive I own. the built quality fit finish is nearly perfect. Once you've got it in the hand it's amazing. And it's smaller than I thought. Is it worth it for me absolutely it will be for many a game changer. There's nothing like it. I love my mcbee and it's my personal favorite. It's not the most functional but at the office it's great looks really good, expensive, solid etc. I can talk hours about this little masterpiece but just buy it as long as you can. This is the first Spyderco this year that I'm actually considering purchasing. I have enough functional knives, so if I'm going to get something new it's going to be for fun. I want to check out the high-end fit and finish that Spyderco can offer, but I can't afford it in the larger knives.

A good glazier (glass and metal architectural worker) needs a small thick flat but sharp blade to cut the thick plastic tip on his caulking gun. Razor blades can work but I've also seen them break or need multiple scores to cut through the thick plastic then your tip is all chewed up and your caulking looks like shit. McBee works perfect for that application it's more sturdy then a razor blade but less cumbersome and more precise then a big knife. Most the guys I work with have a small cleaver or warncliff type blade for that purpose.

This little bug is way too expensive for what it offers. Honestly it looks like a fashion statement or a status symbol more than anything else. Considering the length of the blade, CTS-XHP is never going to be fully utilized unless you cut electrical cords and computer cables with it all the time. Honestly, if I had to choose between this and Boker Plus DW-2 (AUS-8), I would buy the latter for a FRACTION of the price. In fact, instead of having 1 expensive McBee that can hold an edge, I could buy 2 Bokers to swap between sharpening and always one sharp, and STILL have money left to buy a nice D2/VG-10 knife.
