Today, we'll take a look at a very nice, very pricey pocketknife: The Spyderco/Peter Rassenti Paysan.

I’ve handled this guy for an extensive period of time. No lock failure, detent weak but not overly so. Mine sliced very well from the factory. IMO Spyderco needs a custom division (like ZT has) to separate branding of pieces like this as well as to allow stronger focus on all the small details like detent etc. for each individual knife.
@NickShabazz5 жыл бұрын
I agree there. That's the problem that a lot of production companies have when they start going HIGH END, is that the standards of QC and service are just different for a $520 knife relative to a $100 knife. Whether that's handled with specific divisional changes, or just a different set of procedures, it's all good, but I agree with you there.

Great review as always. There are a lot of things that aren't perfect on this knife. But for me, the positives outweigh the negatives. It has a very large and heavy blade and a very light weight handle. I like both of these things. The action is fantastic. It carries very well for its size.The detent is weak but it helps with the spidey flick and in an emergency it can be 'thrown open'. The blade just past the cutting edge is very thick and at some point I may get it reground but for now it works well enough for most things. The clip is a piece of junk so I replaced it with an MXG PM2 deep carry clip which looks great and works well. Bottom line is that I enjoy carrying it and playing with it more than most other knives .But the criticisms are well founded and this knife will not be for everyone.

@miguellodeiro96715 жыл бұрын
I like spyderco and I like your reviews. That been said, this knife brings out plenty of problems in the industry and the community imo. Production knives should not be priced over $300. Here your paying $80 - $100 for designer fee and the same for manufacture complications. The integral handle its a complication to the manufacturer and to the user, it's difficult to produce, bringing the cost up to what in reality is a hipe that doesn't solve any problem or gives any advantage over regular handles. The idea is that it would be stronger, yet it would never be needed in a folder nor tested by user because of price of the product, also is a detriment to edc use been hard to clean and maintain. What this offers is pride of ownership, a very expensive un tangible quality that imo should be more appreciated at hand made products. Moreover, the matter of excellent fit and finish, perfectly chamfered spine and thumb hole is something that should be present in every other knife of this brand, and we as customers let it slide in cheaper models so the manufacturer can save it for expensive items so we can see some tangible difference.

For someone who loves Spyderco, you have the most bizarre version of the Spydie-flick I've ever seen. A weird kind of approach from over the top of the hole with the index finger rather than coming from underneath with the middle finger Spiderman style. Is that a result of the LBH or just the way you got used to doing it?

To be frank I'm not feelin' this one. In hand maybe it's great but on camera it looks clunky, awkward and undistinguished. But then I haven't loved any of Spyderco's versions of Rassenti's work. They seem to take the elegant and handsome designs of a true master and turn them into industrial machine parts.
@franksalem85805 жыл бұрын
I bought one and returned it because of the weak detente and lock stick. However the best feature of the knife was how it felt in the hand. It did not feel clunky at all but had a sleekness to it that made it feel just right. I already miss the way it felt in hand.

What kind of argument was that for the Clip? The standard clip is OK because you can replace it easily? Well, you shouldn’t have to replace it in the first place! Its MSRP is 800 Dollars! At this price I expect a custom clip, which can still be attached using this standard method by the way. There is no excuse.
@gregshock5 жыл бұрын
At the going retail price they should include a standard clip and a deep carry clip. Still want one.
@Dynotop1a5 жыл бұрын
I think Nick's view on the clip is similar to mine. The standard clip works fine, despite not being deep carry. It’s just doesn’t fit well with the overall knife. You don’t have to replace it, but you have the option to. And that’s more than what the Drunken offers. I believe that’s why he stressed the standardized aspect of the clip. I also believe that you, Nick and I would all appreciate a more refined stock clip.

This integral thing is a fad hopefully. Offers no real-world advantage, just makes maintenance and cleaning more difficult and drives the price up. What I DO want to see more of are sheepsfoot blades! Best blade shape for EDC, change my mind.
@Sicarius8885 жыл бұрын
Real world advantages doesn't matter if people mainly buy expensive knives for collection. I don't blame them, if I were to spent 500 it better have more exotic features than the one for 100. And I don't think integrals will go away if biggest example of no real world advantage is going strong, titanium handles. Scratches, snail trails, more expensive, soft, you need lock insert and washers under bearings to make it work more than a few months. All that problems only because people think titanium is cool and premium and steel framelocks aren't. And no real advantage, because weight difference in a pocket knife is minimal and nice anodization will soon looks ugly with scratches.
@Gramkan5 жыл бұрын
I’m guessing you’ve never owned one, it makes for a much lighter knife and it’s far more simple to clean and maintain, has less screw holes and places for grime to accumulate and it also takes a fraction of the time to disassemble and reassemble

@drameday5 жыл бұрын
Pretty meh for $500+. Integral frames are a rip-off. You pay a lot more money for a machine to mill your handle from one piece, and what do you get? A knife that’s harder to disassemble and clean. A knife you can’t add custom scales to. And a knife that you can’t adjust the detent at all. I’ll stick with my 4-5 piece handles and enjoy two or three for every one integral I could potentially own.
@jacknemo80215 жыл бұрын
One of my usual beefs with Spuderco is that their products have crap fit and finish. Scratches and grind lines at their price points are unacceptable. I do not have that complaint with this model, However they did substantially increase the price in order to provide you what you should have gotten in every model.....
