I mean it still works just fine for stabbing people who aren't wearing plate armour. Whether you're carrying a bollock dagger, a rondel, or a basilard, they're all equally deadly against unarmoured foes, just the martial daggers were a flex because they implied you had training to know how to defend yourself.

@@MrSamulaiI think you misunderstand the concept. This particular style of dagger was used often in combat between two armored opponents. Not because it pierces through solid steel. No knife or sword can stab or cut through plate armor. The point was so fine that you used it to stab in the gaps, or through their visor. The fact that civilians also carried it for useful against ruffians was because it's really good at stabbing, not because they needed to pierce armor.

Also known as the "Misericorde dagger or "The dagger of mercy", because it was used to finish a badly wounded knight, or the knight will ask for "mercy". Ergo, he rather choices death than to be taken prisoner, because if it's a nobleman, the enemy can ask for ransom, torture him for information, etc. Samurai carried a tanto blade for the same reason, and to off themselves if they are losing the battle and baddle wounded.

Yes. The storybook ideal of chivalric combat generally didn't happen. It was catch-as-catch can, keep your head on a swivel', do unto the other bloke as quickly as possible and move on. I was reading some "Tristan & Iseult", and in a 15 century version, it's said that it was carried by tristan and one of his mate to protect himself while they were disguised as civilians : In fact, it's quite cheap and easy to produce, awfully effective, can go trough any brigandine or any armor, can still hit quite hard even if you don't stab (it's still a steel stick, good tongue-twister imo) and can be hidden quite easely... if i can carry only one weapon, i think it would be a really good choice, maybe better than the good old mace (but this one can also have a stabby tip, and a slingshot option, so...)

One thing I read once was that Rondels were banned in some of the Italian city states during the 15th century (how well this ban was enforced is unknown) officially because they lacked a crossguard and thus couldn't be used as a crucifix for prayer but apparently this is believed to be more of an excuse (as people were still allowed to carry guns, messers and other weapons which lacked crossguards) and they were more worried about stabbings. Venice interestingly enough apparently put a tax on Rondel Daggers rather than ban them (although included a loophole that meant they were tax free if you were "taking them on pilgrimage, crusade or any other activity which would advance Christianity or Venetian Trade).

If my understanding is correct, the Rondel daggers were meant to stab at the weak joints of platemail (not full plate). Also if I remember correctly, the round bits of armor, dangling off the shoulder, in front of the armpits (that were covered by mail) were called Rondels.
@G1NZOU
@G1NZOU 11 ай бұрын
Even full plate isn't immune to these, it's harder, but if you have an armoured foe on the ground, especially if you've bashed him in the head a couple of times with a mace, it's easier to get the point into the weak points. Less easy if he's on his feet in full plate and actively trying to prevent you doing so.

You could cut with some types. I have used some more “bladed” versions and they can be pretty effective at chopping through mats… My favorite technique with them is the old hand scissors though… brutal as hell, and if the blade is dull you will simply rip the persons hand off instead of slicing it. This technique can be done with a blunt piece of plastic and have a similar effect…
